Rising up: The Levicle story
Hi, I’m Tom Mackenzie an inventor and entrepreneur from New Zealand. After success with taking my small start-up business to a multi-million dollar publicly listed company I’m following my passion of designing the world’s most versatile, fun and easy to use commuter vehicle.
I’ve always wanted to simplify the bicycle and make the kick scooter more comfortable. Inspiration for this came while pushing a shopping trolley down the aisle in the local supermarket.
It was here that I put all my weight on my hands and enjoyed the feeling of levitating above the supermarket floor. I also realised it was very easy to build up speed with very little effort.
Gliding effortlessly down the frozen food aisle I thought there had to be a good way to emulate this free-floating feeling of travel. And there was.
But… not straight away.
The first prototype I built had a basic wheel between the rider’s legs and some handles attached to the wheel frame. It was unstable and genuinely scary to ride.
I then added a rear wheel, which worked better when it was fixed.
With the help of a bicycle designer Dylan Filbee a few more prototypes were produced before we wound up with the final version. This model, in commuter and kids versions, is now ready for production.
The best of both worlds-Design
The Levicle bike takes the best attributes from a bike and a kick scooter and combines them. It has a large wheel at the front which makes it both comfortable to ride and safer, as it can ride over stones and other objects that a traditional scooter can get caught on.
The Levicle comes in two models. The commuter model has front “V” brakes and a fast-riding slick front tyre. The kids model is built tough and, with no front brakes, easy to spin around and get creative with. Both models can be adjusted for an adult or a six year old to ride.
Due to the upright stature riding on the Levicle, front braking is sufficient and does not have the same effect of going over the handle bars as bicycles.
Ride on time-Speed
You can definitely accelerate faster than a bicycle from a standing start and, with narrow handlebars, navigate through crowds. As there are no pedals (which means it’s not classed as a bicycle) you will also be able to ride on the footpath or sidewalk in most countries.
Sit up and take notice-Posture
The seat is close to the handlebars, eliminating the need to bend the lower back and reducing back pain. This also provides the ‘trolley effect’, allowing you to feel like you’re levitating across the ground
Chuck the chain-Ease
There is no greasy chain to mess up your clothes and make you late for work. In fact, with very little maintenance required, it’s easy to ‘set and forget’.
A small fortune-Convenience
Compact and lightweight, the Levicle was designed to quickly pack down into a 720mm x 356mm x 193mm (28.3in x 14in x 7.6in) space. With a simple carry bag it’s ideal for taking on the bus or train.
Worth it’s weight in... Lightness
Built from lightweight (less than 5kg or 11lb), long-lasting high-grade aluminium the Levicle bike is easy to carry on the elevator, store in the office or, at the end of the day, carry in from outside after your children have worn themselves out riding about on it all day.
We will ship directly from the manufacturer to anywhere around the world. All Levicle bikes will be carefully packed and shipped in a custom box for maximum protection. To minimize the cost to the consumer a small amount of simple assembly will be required.
All prices include insurance and free shipping to Australia, Canada, China, Japan, EU, NZ and USA. All other countries add NZ$30 (US$20/EUR18).
Please note additional duties/taxes may apply depending on your destination country.
All exchange rates may vary from those estimated.
Risks and challenges
Manufacturing a new product always has the risk of unforeseen issues arising. However these will be mitigated greatly with the standardised components of the Levicle. These do not require time-consuming moulds and testing – which means less chance of delays in production.
Tom Mackenzie has over 10 years worth of experience in quality manufacturing in Asia, and has been rigorous in his selection process to ensure the manufacturer can deliver production with speed and quality.
Furthermore, a Levicle appointed person will be stationed at the factory during production and extensive quality testing of each of the finished products will be performed before shipping to ensure you receive the highest quality, free-wheeling, fun-loving freedom.
Delays in shipping may occur, particularly around the pre Xmas months that may be out of our control. However we have been working with a very experienced logistics company to ensure freight is sent around the world in a timely manner. All packages will be tracked and traced to further reduce any delivery issues.
The trademark has been registered and a patent covering all the novel aspects of the Levicle has also been registered. This will help protect your investment in the first such bike of its kind.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
