Cigarettes & Valentines is an hour-long dramedy series about romance in the digital age (or lack thereof...) and finding love in a Grindr world - especially for those outcasts who do not fit in to the Ken Doll mold; This is a punk rock love epic that shows what happens when a romantic comedy gets hit with a bucket of ice cold reality.
Ever watch Looking? C&V is the anti Looking! ;-) This is a dramedy that is FULL ON with both the comedy and drama. The tone of the show is a cross between an awkward cringey comedy, like The Comeback, and a melancholy Sofia Coppola sort of film - meets gay Get Out.
Adrian Ludlow is a gay twenty-nothing hopelessexual living in Brooklyn, whose life has veered drastically off-course. A former punk, Adrian is rapidly running out of luck, out of hope, and out of cigarettes. Finding himself broke and loveless, he accepts a job writing "sponsored content" for Clickline (the online destination for uptight millennials), and is quickly making his way down the slide of assimilation.
When his best friend and roommate, Charlie, convinces him to join a world he's always had an aversion to - online dating - it sets off a chain of events that finds Adrian on a journey, desperately trying to find romance, in an attempt to answer the question... does love still exist in a Grindr world? And does being yourself amount to a life of solitude? Through one awkward moment, almost-lover, and ill-fated non-suitor after another, Adrian tries to maintain his punk rock spirit as he navigates his way through a tightly-wound gay culture where conformity rules the night. The young punk must rely on his own inner fire, and the sparks falling from his cigarettes, to march forward and find everything he wants - before the clock of his youth ticks down to turning 30 - Gay 70 - and time runs out.
Cigarettes & Valentines is a provocative and unflinching punk rock love epic - a melancholy study on the erosion of love in the digital age, disguised as a comedy about dating.
WHAT WE DOIN':
We've had some interest in the show, but they always want to see footage first. So for this endeavor, we are filming a sizzle reel/pilot presentation, which we shall edit into an epic trailer. This will help us generate interest and sell the show, so we can produce the full series. Remember: If we don't hit the fundraising goal, we don't get to keep any of the money! So please help support bold, daring, and independent LGBT content!
"Some people are batshit crazy. Others are just crazy enough..."
Why are we making this show? Because no one else did.
For a decade now, I’ve been gay and single, seemingly always going up against the same issues (hookup culture, cliques, judgement, ghosting, soullessness, heartbreak, gay archetypes and the expectations of fulfilling those roles, etc). Every gay person I know is dealing with the same things - yet we all think we’re alone. I’ve never seen these things discussed on TV. I’ve never seen gay characters that I could relate to. I've never seen the reality of gay dating discussed in the open.
Nobody is aware of the things that single LGBT people are really going through because nobody talks about it! Nobody There has never been a show like this. There has never been a gay character like Adrian, who is tough as nails, yet ultimately very fragile. (The funniest moments of the show are when Adrian, this bitter abrasive punk, is put in situations where he’s expected to be like these musical theater/interior decorating kind of gays.)
So the goal is to hopefully make something that really is quite revolutionary and trailblazing.
Season one episodes range from "Don't Masc, Don't Tell", a study on modern masculinity; to "The Bomb Shelter of Cranford, New Jersey", a cringeworthy sexual odyssey in the suburbs; to "Pavlov's Romance", a look at the toll of repeated heartbreak and the emotional cost of individuality. This is a dramedy that is FULL ON with both the comedy and the drama! (Yknow... some offer neither...)
MONEY MONEY MONEY:
We set a modest goal, but filming in NYC is expensive, so the more funds we raise, the better it can be! Our expenses include:
- Equipment (sound, audio, lighting, etc)
- Locations (Adrian and Charlie's apartment, big bar scene, etc)
- Transportation and catering for the crew
- Reward fulfilment
The majority of our cast & crew is volunteering their time, because they really believe in this show. Any unused funds will go towards compensating them for their hard work. (Particularly our amazing Director of Photography).
ETC ETC ETC!
Below are some images and clips from the pilot script for you guys. We will be updating this page regularly with things like poster art and video diaries. From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU all so much for supporting and believing in this show. This is a show that is made by - and for - all the twenty-nothing hopelessexuals...
Risks and challenges
This show is a labor of love. We are making this fully independently on a low budget so we don’t have to water anything down. Thankfully we’ve got a great team behind us, ready to take on NYC! Then the world. #gayvolution.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
