Update #27

HexBright Update

Hi Backers!

There is a new video update below.

PWM of amp control for the FLEX is working but the board is a bit of a mess. We are putting out version 3 right now.

In other news, I sent out an email to the PRIME backers about a week ago. Originally I thought PRIME funding would help FLEX development but with less than 300 people interested in the PRIME and almost 5K FLEX units to make it's the other way around. Oh, the irony. A number of PRIME people asked if they can update to FLEX. As we move in to manufacturing we'll figure out a way to give that option to PRIME backers for those who desire it.

As always, thank you for believing in the project.

Christian

What kind of 3d printer do you have?

Thanks for the update I'm really looking forward to the Flex finally coming.
I see that you could pop out the "lens" in the prototype does that mean in the production version that we'll be able to pop it out too to change the lens from a clear one to a red, blue, green, etc. if needed?

The tool to install the front ring securing the glass sounds like a useful accessory to include with the HexBright.

Nice update. +1 for finding more about your 3d printer.... those look like some high quality prints.

@James James Park: I couldn't agree more, I would very much appreciate the ability to pre-order another Flex. But I am nowhere near the US, so I don't know how shipping would work; I suspect it would simply be too much hassle for them to offer this as an option :(

@Andrew Thanks for that. From the most recent update it looks like it won't need to go any lower than 200Hz @3LM so flicker shouldn't be an issue. I've got a couple of cheap lights that are in the 40 to 60 Hz range and they are very annoying under some conditions.

I just got the Etched Flex...Should I have gotten a survey?

      Christian,
I didn't receive an e-mail either. Might this be due to the fact that I'm in the $90 HexBright Twin Pack group, set to receive one Prime and one Flex? Come to think of it, I only received one survey when I thought you had mentioned two—one for Flex backers and one for Prime backers.

By the way, a quick bit of math shows that there are 473 HexBright Prime backers (218 + 17 + 238 from the $35, $50, and $90 groups), though 238 of those backers are, like myself, doubled with the HexBright Flex.

@Hal- the email would come thru KS. Is it in your junk mail? Anyway, I want to offer an upgrade to PRIME backers if they so desire. BUt there is no need to offer it now because I haven't started manufacturing yet,

Keep up the good fight, product development is a messy business but you're almost there. I am excited to get the Flex!

      Hey Christian,
I am one of the less then 300 prime backers but I dont recall seeing an email last week. I went back through my email and didn't see anything except last months Update #26. Did I miss something? I realize this isnt a support forum but I thought I would let you know that some might not have gotten that email. Looking forward to what you finally come up with for designs.

      @Crispin
From what i've read, the FLEX uses a constant current buck boost power supply for the LED, which means the brightness of the LED will be 100% through almost all of the battery's life (high will always be the same brightness, no dimming as battery dies). It then PWMs the current source's supply to adjust the brightness of the LED.

With proper programming you can totally eliminate PWM flicker at low brightness, and given that the Flex is reprogrammable, it should be fairly easy to bump the PWM frequency up to 25KHz or more so that you can't see any flicker, even at 0.5% power (presuming it's not programmed with a high PWM frequency to begin with)

Creator Crispin Cooper on December 6, 2011

      Hi,
Last update said "constant current buck boost" but this one says "PWM" (pulse width modulation) - Which voltage & current control mechanism are you using? Thanks!

PS: I'm sure this isn't what you are doing, but I've seen a lot of lights that use PWM and at lower brightness levels the light flickers in a really annoying way as a result of the PWM frequency falling to frequencies that are visible under some conditions.

I've underestimated just how much i desire this flashlight...
I actually want one more flex, and with every update I regret ordering just one.
Could us $60 pledgers move up to the $90 or $110 during the time prime pledgers get their option?

Thanks for the occasional updates! I can't wait for a light that actually "lights" things up on the road while biking!

@Laura - not a chance I'm afraid. As pointed out in the video, the design will be locked down by Christmas. Virtually nothing is likely to happen over the Christmas break, and then it'll take a few weeks to tool up for manufacturing. I'm hoping to see mine around February/March - I think that's a realistic target if things go smoothly. Could easily be later though.

Thanks for the update, but I would REALLY like to know when we might actually be seeing the finished product. I do understand that there are issues and mod's happening, but it has been quite a while... No stress; I'd just like it know.

Nice video, the updates are appreciated and it was very interesting to see how you used printed prototype components. If I may ask, which 3d printer do you have?

I have a quick question, are you anodizing or alodining? Or neither? I forgot which method you are using. I am looking forward to your final product.
My light will be living in a salt environment "boat flash light" which I think it will do well.
From what I can see all of your threads will be like metals "alum to alum" so it should be easy to lubricate the threads and not fear galvanic corrosion.
Thanks for all your hard work on this...
