The story behind the idea
As a child, my favorite artist was always Madonna. I would plead and beg my mom to buy me all of her cassettes as they came out. The first one I ever owned was Like A Virgin. I would put that cassette in my walkman and listen to it over and over every day. The music brought such joy to my life. Had YouTube been around in the early 80's I would have easily been a viral sensation. My mom loves to tell stories about me dancing around in my room mimicking Madonna's dance moves as I wailed as loudly as possible into a hair brush.
In our household Madonna was banned for a while as her career became more and more controversial. This only made me love her more. Growing up I thought my mom was the meanest person around for removing the music that got me through the day from our house. Now that I am older and have seen her in concert a few times I have met fans from all over the country that have a similar story. Through meeting and talking to other fans at concerts I realized my story was not unique.
One of Madonna's most controversial moments was the release of the film Truth or Dare. The film was one of, if not the first, piece of reality film making. It was shortly after this when Madonna was banned in our house.
As I mentioned before, when you go to a Madonna concert, you meet fans from all over the world that have had their own experiences with Madonna's music. She has been in the business for over 30 years now and her music is the soundtrack of so many people's lives. Those stories need to be heard. That is where I came up with the idea for this documentary.
In the film, I will follow Madonna's upcoming Rebel Heart tour and interview fans from around the world. I will document the experience both before and after the show. The film I envision will have the feel of the original Truth or Dare film, but from the fan's perspective. There will be fun moments, there will be shocking moments and there will most likely be touching moments. Together we will learn fan's stories of when their love for Madonna started, what she means to them, how many times have they seen her, how she has changed their lives and more. Together we will explore the fan experience.
What I plan on using the funds for
With the funds raised I intend on going to at least 3 of Madonna's North American tour dates for her upcoming Rebel Heart Tour.
I may be able to make it to more than 3 shows depending on the amount of funding raised, but 3 is the bare minimum.
I have been shooting home videos and editing them myself using my Sony Handycam for years. In order to complete this project I will use a portion of the funding to rent or purchase a professional video camera. Some of the material may still be filmed using either my iPhone 6 or Handycam, but the majority will be filmed on professional equipment.
Some of the funding will be used to hire a cameraman, some will be used to have the DVDs (potentially Blu-Rays also) professionally pressed and the rest will go towards travel expenses and concert tickets. It is important to note that the finished project will most likely not feature any of Madonna's music unless I go above and beyond the funding goal.
Risks and challenges
This is a documentary following a world tour that hasn't started yet. There is always the possibility that the show will be cancelled, postponed or rescheduled for unforeseen reasons. In the event that tour dates get rescheduled I will keep all funders updated on how that will effect the delivery expectation.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
