Originally opened in 1909, the Roxie has operated as an arthouse theater since the 1970s, showing the best independent, experimental, repertory, foreign, and documentary films. Newly transitioned to a nonprofit, the Roxie features innovative programming that could never be presented at mainstream venues. Our continued service to local and international film culture relies on the generosity of our supporters. Your contribution will help us secure our future and the future of the amazing projects we present.

GROUNDBREAKING INDEPENDENT PROGRAMMING
The Roxie has remained true to its mission to promote and support truly
independent film and filmmakers. We do so by taking risks, showing
non-traditional and experimental films that challenge the status quo and
inspire viewers. We have an incredibly full and diverse schedule of programs
that transcend the traditional movie-going experience, providing exclusive
engagements with actors and directors in person, deep repertory film series,
cult festivals, and events that merge music, performance, visual arts, food,
drink, and critical discourse with film.
Visit www.Roxie.com to view all of our recent and upcoming programs.
Filmmaker John Waters discusses the mind (AND if you know how to do it right - body) blowing experiences you can have at the Roxie Theater.
BUILDING SUSTAINABILITY
The Roxie’s Recent improvements since becoming a nonprofit include:
- A fresh infusion of thoughtful programming that has boosted ticket sales;
- Two highly successful annual fundraising events – John Waters' Sleigh Full of Smut in 2010 and Amy Sedaris' Simple Times Crafts for Poor People in 2011;
- The Roxie was one of only four new organizations selected for funding by San Francisco’s Grants for the Arts in 2012;
- Our new Membership Program already boasts over 100 members;
- We’ve added a new NEC 2K digital projector and sound system thanks to a generous donation from Pixar; and
- We’ve remodeled our main theater and we've also begun the transformation of our smaller theater, adding new murals by community partner Clarion Alley Mural Project artists.
The Roxie still needs to raise $60,000 to fund institutional upgrades and secure the theater’s sustainability for many years to come. Your donation will help provide digital conversion services (to supplement but not replace our beloved 35mm and 16mm equipment), the design and implementation of a new website, and a contribution towards a long-term capital reserve to ensure the theater’s future.

THE ROXIE'S HISTORY
Risks and challenges
There’s really nothing but risk for Art House theaters operating today amidst for-profit multiplexes that offer the latest industry blockbusters and the many online streaming services now available. However, these venues lack: 1) truly independent programming including experimental and non-traditional works by emerging or controversial filmmakers; and 2) the presentation of film in conjunction with music, performance, visual art, comedy, food, beverage, and/or critical discourse. The Roxie provides this every day (except one) of the year. In order for the Roxie to continue presenting the highly unique programming we offer, we must succeed.
