XYbrid — A monster-building transparent card game

$25,027

693

Build something diabolical. Combine brutal biology, relentless robotics, mind-bending physics and volatile chemistry as you compete to become the most infamous monster-building scientist. The nefarious possibilities are almost endless—the parts in one XYbrid deck can create more than half a billion different monsters.

Each card is transparent, so building your monster is a creative experience unlike any other game—and because each card has different art on either side, the path to ultimate infamy is always uniquely yours.

GAMEPLAY

Players take turns drawing parts from the Lab and using them to build monsters that will increase their infamy score. Each monster begins with a core part, and is complete when it has a head, two arms, and legs. Secret Breakthrough cards help players formulate strategies and unleash surprises each round—will you go for brute force or cunning combinations?—while Mission effects raise the stakes as the game goes on. After 3 rounds, the most infamous player wins!

The spirit of the Brand-a-Bot pledge level is to let players put their personal, permanent mark on XYbrid by including their initials in a piece of card art. In science fiction, you often see arbitrary letters and numbers adorning robots and machines—this is your chance to become those arbitrary letters and numbers! Here are the rules:

  • You submit a sequence of up to 3 letters and/or numbers with your survey after the end of the campaign. This can be your initials, or birthdate, or any creative, meaningful group of 3 alphanumeric characters. I handle everything from there.
  • I reserve the right to reject a submission for any reason. Some reasons may include: offensive or suggestive content, trademarked content, submissions greater than 3 characters, submissions with special characters, etc.
  • If your submission is rejected, I will work with you to come to an acceptable alternative.
  • Stylistic choices such as color, font, and placement are at the discretion of the artist. Please know that the goal is to make your “brand” large and bold (not to hide it within the art).

Transparent cards are what make XYbrid a uniquely visual gaming experience. Unfortunately, most manufacturers aren’t equipped to produce transparent cards—it requires special machines, inks, and material. Start to finish, the creation of a XYbrid deck is simply more expensive than it would be for standard paper cards. The basic pledge level of $29 helps cover the increased production cost of making something that looks and plays extra cool.

The funding goal of $14,500 is based on close and specific coordination with two manufacturers who provided quotes for producing XYbrid. After factoring in additional fees and shipping estimates, I believe this goal is the most realistic target that allows for a reasonable game price.

The pledge levels are simple by design. As this is my first foray into game production, I chose to focus on getting the game itself right, and avoid the added complexity of extra components, perks, or stretch goals. This strategy keeps cost down and removes distractions during the critical production and fulfillment phases.

For this project, shipped rewards will come from the United States. While I am happy to send copies of XYbrid anywhere in the world, I do not have distribution partners in Europe or Asia at this time. Please know that customs charges and value-added taxes (VAT) may arise but are different for every country and are the responsibility of the backer upon delivery.

You can find more details about manufacturing and delivery in the Risks and Challenges Section below.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

I'm Gabe. My day job is in graphic design and user experience. I get paid to create things people enjoy interacting with, and over the years I’ve directed more than a few projects that required unusual art production—hence my confidence in bringing a transparent card game to life. I'm committed to understanding how players consume fun—I study what motivates people to engage with, learn, and solve problems; then I use that knowledge to make stuff.

I've been concocting game ideas since I was a kid, but XYbrid is my first public game design. It grew from my love of modular creativity (my childhood was all Mega Man and Lego) and my love of mind-blowing, weird science. In fact, many XYbrid cards are inspired by real-life scientific concepts.

My favorite tabletop games are quick to play, but allow for deeper strategy to develop as players learn. XYbrid was designed, developed, and tested over 4 years to provide this type of play experience, built around a unique visual style. My hope is that Kickstarter will bring people like me together to make this quirky, creative game a reality.

Risks and challenges

MANUFACTURING
The concept and vision for XYbrid has been vetted by two proven, global game manufacturers. The vendor I am planning to use for manufacturing is located in Hong Kong, and has assured me that their company can accomplish the printing of two-sided transparent plastic cards. Producing XYbrid as I have described above is contingent on their word and ability.

The production process will begin almost immediately after funding. With the exception of adjustments for the Brand-a-Bot pledge level, the art for all 116 cards (and the rulebook) is already finished. Box art is nearly finished as well, needing only to be transferred into a technical format for manufacturing.

TIMING
My delivery target is November 2017.

The process for review and approval of products manufactured in Asia can take weeks. I have accounted for a reasonable amount of back-and-forth in the timeline, but errors and/or misunderstandings resulting in unforeseen rounds of revision can extend the production timeline and delay delivery. International customs and/or changing international trade policies—while completely out of my control—can also impact timing and cost.

An overwhelming number of backers could require additional manufacturing or fulfillment coordination which may also delay delivery.

SHIPPING
Backers are asked to provide shipping information (and possibly other information, depending on pledge level) promptly after a successfully funded campaign. Providing inaccurate shipping information may result in additional fees to correct.

Errors can occur during shipping, such as lost or damaged items. In such cases, backers can contact me to arrange for replacement items.

By placing a pledge, you affirm that you’ve read and understand the Risks and Challenges section.
