Bastard Son: Murderborn is a mature-themed, full-colour, horror graphic novel. Created by writer, Frank T. Allen and artist, Marco "Sbrillo" Fontanili, the book will be approximately 130 pages long, comprising of a five chapter story arc as well as bonus material.
Origins of a Bastard
So, one night, I was watching a slasher movie and I thought to myself, "Ok, this is fun and all, but why do we hardly ever get to fully explore the killer in these types of films? What are his motivations from his point of view?" Don't get me wrong, we at 'Team Bastard Son', are huge fans of Jason, Freddy, Michael etc, but we always wished that we could delve deeper into the characters.
Soon after I started drafting ideas for Bastard Son, I contacted Marco, (who probably likes horror even more than I do). We spent hours discussing our likes and dislikes where the genre is concerned and found that we had a lot in common. Character designs were drawn up, stories were plotted and the result is what you see here.
Everything from the way the story and characters are written, to how they are brought to life by Marco's fantastic art is influenced by the likes of: John Carpenter, Sam Raimi's 'Evil Dead Trilogy', Stuart Gordon's 'Re-Animator', Tobe Hooper's 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', Clive Barker's 'Hellraiser', the works of H.P. Lovecraft and awesome Italian legends like Dario Argento, Lamberto and Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci, Claudio Fragasso... the list goes on!
The disturbing tale of Ethan WellesEthan Welles' chances at a happy life were screwed at birth.
As a child, Ethan would wake every night to the sound of his own screams. Through terrified tears, the boy would tell his mother of a monstrous figure that pursued him through endless dark corridors, whispering awful things in an inhuman voice.
Now a grown man, Ethan thought the nightmares from his childhood to be a thing of the past. He thought the terror banished by years of therapy and anti-psychotics. He was wrong. The nightmares came back. He came back. The darkness inside Ethan won't stop until it claims him and it isn't alone.
There are others.
Others that would reclaim what was taken from them twenty years ago.
Others that would finish what they started.
We've got psycho rednecks! A twisted scientist! Impossible freaks of nature! Terrified teens and more blood and gore than you can shake a rusty machete at!
Enough talk! Show me something!

Why we need you!
Where does my money go?
Printing costs for independent creators are prohibitive, not to mention that if this book gets seen through to completion, Marco will have spent nearly all his waking time over about 13 months at his drawing board and computer! I would like to see him get some small compensation for giving up his social life for all that time and I'm sure, after seeing samples of his incredible art, you would too. Any profit made will go towards funding future 'Bastard Son' stories.
Because I wanted 'Bastard Son: Murderborn' to be as meticulously presented as possible, I hired Taylor Esposito from Ghost Glyph studios to do the lettering. Taylor is a veteran pro-letterer, with extensive stints at both Marvel and DC comics, working on some of their top titles.
In addition to the printing and lettering costs, there are also Kickstarter fees, taxes, the merchandise, shipping and packaging to account for.
Risks and challenges
When it comes to printing and shipping, there are always potential unforeseen hiccups.
