Efemera of Prague, a team consisting of Dan Senn, Anja Kaufmann, Stanislav Abrahám, is organizing ECHOFLUXX, a five day international festival of artist-presented avant garde music, media art and film. The event will be held at the Trafačka Arena (pronounced Trah-fach-ka) in Prague, the Czech Republic, from July 12th to the 16th. Entry to the event will be free.
OK, what makes ECHOFLUXX so special, and one worth supporting through Kickstarter? Let’s start with the performance space itself, a large, reverberant, yes, ECHOey, concrete structure which was once a regional power plant here in Prague, buy more recently used by Czech artists to produce alternative exhibitions and performances.
Why produce an music and video festival in a space like this?
Normally the best performance space is one that is acoustically transparent and Trafačka is just the opposite. You would never find the Boston Pops performing in a space like this! You see, you cannot easily perform in Trafačka unless you are willing to accept the space as a kind of creative partner. In other words, you must be willing to perform with the space and not just in the space.
And what does this mean?
Every environment, from your living room to one of the beautiful cathedrals here in Prague, have acoustics which are unique, where the sounds sound differently in different locations. For the traditional symphonic orchestra, the ideal is to have a hall where sounds sound evenly throughout the concert hall. But since Trafačka was made to house power equipment, sounds sound radically different, yes, endlessly different, throughout its concrete interior, AND, some of the today’s most interesting and edgy composer-filmmakers, like Phill Niblock of New York City, have long written music that exploits such acoustically uneven spaces. At a Niblock event, if you want, you can sit in just one place throughout a presentation, but the best experience, by far, is to actively participate in the sound by moving from location to location during the performance. In this sense, you actually become a performer as you create a experience special to yourself. Also, there will be multiple video projections running on different surfaces and so this makes visual sense too.
And so, ECHOFLUXX is different from other new media festivals, as it happily embraces the sonic uniqueness, the opaqueness, of the spaces like theTracfačka Arena in preference to the transparent perfection of more traditional venues.
Yet another aspect special to this event is that we are producing ECHOFLUXX on zero money but not without some considerable in-kind support. The festival space, for example, has been provided free to us by the Trafačka people. Most of the video and sound equipment, and there’s a lot of it, has been donated by FAMU, Prague’s great film school. All of the performers, including those from Switzerland, Austria, the UK, The Netherlands, the United States, and, of course, the Czech Republic, are performing for free. FAMU has even agreed to house some of the artists, while still others are being housed in volunteer homes. And finally the web-site and festival organization is being donated by Efemera of Prague.
Therefore, we would like support for the following:
1. To enable thorough video documentation, editing, and production of an ECHOFLUXX DVD.
2. To print postcards for distribution by hand.
3. To provide city transportation for our guest artists using metro passes.
4. And finally, to provide money for our performers. The more we raise, the more we can give to them.
The organizers will organize for free.
We really could use your help for this special event. Thanks!
