ECHOFLUXX 14: FESTIVAL OF NEW MEDIA, MUSIC and ART, MAY 6-10
Echofluxx 14 - the 4th consecutive free festival of new and experimental media, art and music held in Prague, Czech Republic, May 6-10.
Echofluxx 14 is the 4th consecutive new media, art and music festival held in Prague, produced by Efemera of Prague, all of which have been partially financed through Kickstarter campaigns. This year’s festival is again at the Trafačka Arena, the massive former power substation just a few kilometers from the city centre and located in Prague 6. Trafačka is a gentle old giant of concrete construction with the acoustics of a basilica—an extraordinary alternative presence unique to the Czech Republic. The festival will begin on Tuesday, May 6, with the doors opening at 18h beginning with the work of Phaerentz of Prague and Lucie Vitková of Brno. Echofluxx will then continue on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, opening at the same time. The admission is free.
Past Echofluxx festivals have featured the experimental films and music of Phill Niblock, Katherine Liberovskaya, Al Margolis, and Michael Schumacher from New York City and Brooklyn, the acoustic books and music of Joanna Adamczewska, Krystof Topolski, and Lukasz Szalankiewicz from Poland, the video and performance artistry of Brigid Burke and the films and spoken texts of Marcus Bergner, both from Australia. The sound poetry of Toine Horvers, the sound art and dance of Mario van Horrik and Petra Dubach, all from The Netherlands. The unique collaboration of improvised drawing and sound art of Britain’s Frances Sander, Russia’s Dima Borzon, Switzerland's Anja Kaufmann, and Quido Senn, along with many, many Czech presenters like the microtone guitarist Ivan Boreš with composer Michal Rataj, sound artists like Martin Janíček and Petr Ferenc, the sculpture-painter-spinner of disks Michal Cimala, the scratchy film performances of Martin Blažíček with Michal Žboříl, the flashing floor films and sound Michal Cáb with Peter Gonda, the sound improvisations Ladíslav Železný along with the OEM ensemble, the experimental dance Antonie Svobodová withcomposer-conductor Sylva Smejkalová, the stunning video and sound of Daniel Hanzlik and Pavel Mrkus, and then many others.
This year’s festival, under the direction of Dan Senn, cofounder of Roulette Intermedium of Brooklyn, will again feature, experimental video, sound art, free improvisation, contemporary classical music, dance performance, and gallery presentations of sound and visual art. All of it presented free to the public.
There will be a new radio work by the Czech filmmaker and documentarian Hana Železná; a commissioned sound and video work by Brigid Burke of Australia, new works from the Czech tap dancer-musician-composer Lucie Vitková of Brno, world premieres of two new music compositions presented by Czech composers-performers Lenka Kozderková and Markěta Mazourová, a sound performance from Phaerentz of Prague. There will be guitar improvisations and processed works from Mark Zanter of West Virginia, new work from John Keston and David Means of Minneapolis, all of which come to a conclusion with the Echofluxx Ensemble followed by the haunting and beautiful work of Agnes Kutas singing Hungarian folk music.
Documentation has been important part of the Echofluxx festival with each carefully recorded on video and sound and then made available to the public online and in DVD form. As in the past, Echofluxx 14 will be streamed live with interview hosts Michael Karman and David Means using the YouTube Live network system.
The Echofluxx festivals are completely put together with volunteer help from Prague and international artists along with in-kind support from Prague institutions. All of our performers are paid while attendance to the festival is free. Visit echofluxx.org for more information.
Risks and challenges
We have everything pretty much under control. Still need to find a place for a few artists to stay but that is about it. The festival generates lots of excitement and eager participants.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
