About this project
Update* We are going to purchase the Dragonblood Line from Cavalcade Wargames, a line that had some of the first ShadowSea models and many unreleased ones. These will join the AntiMatter Games miniatures lines and are now options for rewards.
Our Current Stretch goals are shown below. These are the ones within shooting distance. The full list of stretch goals is found at the bottom of the page. Azcalta comes with both minis and the base.
New Bonus Stretch Rewards
We now have additional bonus "points" as stretch rewards. Each point is roughly equivalent to one 30mm miniature, but multiple points can be used for books, starter sets, and other items. See the rewards sections to see what points can be used for. These new stretch levels give extra bonus points for each level crossed. Simply add the bonus points to any that are already in the reward. The price levels do not include international shipping charges.
ShadowSea is a game of fast-paced miniatures combat in a lost underground world using 28mm scale figures, powered by the renowned Song of Blades ruleset from Ganesha Games and set in the same world as our game DeepWars. Five competing forces search for ancient artifacts and golden treasures through crumbling ruins, trap-filled catacombs and underwater citadels. ShadowSea has many features that make it a flexible gaming system that is perfect for beginners but deep enough for experienced gamers. The goal of this project is to make the second edition version of ShadowSea, with new artwork, rules and complete starter sets of miniatures. We are already hard at work on the miniatures, with some already completed.
We have an experienced group of sculptors working on the range, including Patrick Keith, Gautier Giroud, Brother Vinni, Bob Olley, Bobby Jackson, Sandra Garrity and Paolo Fabiani. Below are some of the sculpts in progress by Bob Olley and Paolo Fabiani for the Dark Mariners.

ShadowSea takes place in the late 17th century in a alternate history of Earth, where explorers and scientists have discovered a lost underground world beneath a frozen southern continent and salvaged technological wonders left behind by advanced beings. The game world mixes swashbuckling tabletop combat, elemental magic and ancient technology with RPG elements, such as as character development during battle campaigns and a fully customizable character and weapon design system. The look and feel of the game crosses genres, including both fantasy and sci-fi elements, where esoteric science and dimension-shifting magic have unlocked lost cosmic secrets. The competing forces in the Underlands, the name given to the lost world, each have scientists that have salvaged ancient technology and re-built it for battle, even designing their own new versions in some cases. Groups of adventurers, or Warbands, battle in the Underlands to discover new artifacts, golden treasure and glowing crystals that channel the ubiquitous ether fields and power all tech devices. Raw ethereal energy is channeled by spellcasters also, allowing them to vaporize enemies, open dimensional portals or even cause earthquakes.
The ShadowSea storyline follows that of DeepWars, set ten years after the original discovery of the Underlands. Six forces have begun the battle for the Underlands and the glittering treasure it holds. ShadowSea battles take place in three main regions of the Underlands, the Wilderness, the Sunless Forest and the Cities of the Ancients. Each of the environments has distinct terrain features and wild creatures that can affect battle, and in some cases can be more dangerous than the enemy. These main environments are part of the core game and will be described in the ShadowSea rulebook. Most games can be played on a small table, less than 1m square.
This Kickstarter project focuses on the first three forces below for the main funding goal, with three other forces planned as stretch goals. The first three forces are the Fortune Hunters, Dark Mariners and Axibalán Empire. The plan is to produce starter sets of five miniatures each for these forces. Each starter set comes with
- Five miniatures (4 metal on 30mm base, 1 resin on 40 or 50mm base)
- game cards
- cardstock markers and measuring sticks
- printed quickstart rules
- PDF rulebook download

Backers get their choice of items depending on their pledge level. Some pledges come with miniature "points" that can be used to choose anything from the initial goals or unlocked by stretch goals. The point-based method allows trading these miniatures for other items. Each miniature on 30mm base is worth 1 point, but larger ones can be 2 or more points. The rewards shown below have a point value so backers can pick and choose how to spend their miniature points.
Those that backed the original DeepWars project at $50 or higher and back this one at $50 level or higher get one bonus miniature point added to their rewards.
Those that have previously purchased the 1st edition ShadowSea softcover rulebook can get the new softcover rulebook for $16 or 2 points.
Some items in the basic rewards may be swapped for points to use on other items. Starter sets can be swapped for 6 points, softcover rulebooks for 3 points and hardcover books for 6 points.
Adding to Rewards
One can add any unlocked models, books, terrain and starter sets to the pledge by either adding a monetary amount shown for the item or by spending the extra points that come at different pledge levels. In general, the rewards are priced at 20-25% less than the expected retail cost of the final products, but we may add additional points to the higher pledge levels as we pass stretch goals, which increases the value.
International Shipping may increase if items are added to the total. If the amount of a pledge increases to the amount of a higher pledge level, the additional international shipping expense will be used from that higher level. For example, if a basic $12 level (+$5 int. shipping) has $138 of additional items added, it will use the use the shipping expense from the $150 level (+$20 int shipping).

Anyone pledging in this project can choose to select DeepWars starter sets, miniatures and rulebooks to replace any starter sets and books from ShadowSea, or they can mix and match. Many of the miniatures from DeepWars can be used in on land in ShadowSea, including any Amphibious models. The DeepWars miniatures that are unable to leave the water have the Marine ability, although ones with powered dive suits can leave the water normally. Models that can be used in ShadowSea without. All DeepWars miniatures that can be used in ShadowSea with no modifications to the model have a gold coin next to them on the list of "unlocked" reward items that can be chosen by backers
Holiday Shipping option:
If someone chooses DeepWars products only, they can get them shipped out in November or December for the Holidays. This may not be possible with some resin items due to a backlog with our resin casters but we will try to accommodate backers as best we can. Note that if there is a mixture of products from both games and some is shipped early (such as getting DeepWars now and ShadowSea product later), it will require an additional shipping fee to cover the packaging and handling costs.
ShadowSea is designed to be played in different ways, from a simple battle between two or more between players to a cooperative effort of players against a Game Master, or even a solo game against wild creatures and the deadly environment using random encounter tables. Since players can improve their characters and warbands, there is a distinct RPG feel to the game, where even lowly troops can advance and become heroic leaders. Players can even design their own custom models as well as new weapons, armor and ether-tech items using the robust point system included.
ShadowSea is a stand-alone game but is also meant to be complimentary to DeepWars, in that amphibious models or ones in powered dive suits from DeepWars can walk on land and join in land-based adventures in ShadowSea. In this way, owners of both games can design game scenarios that bridge both land and sea, where marine models may patrol the waters while amphibious troops climb from the depths to secure artifacts, and land-based models can dive beneath the waves to open up entry to air-filled structures.
The core game will include the main environments, their dangers and how to create the maps for battles, but supplemental books will include more detailed regions such as the catacombs of the Stygian Depths, with new rules, new characters, printable "dungeon" tiles and encounter cards.
Some of the features of ShadowSea are below:
- DETAILED MINIATURES in 28mm scale, cast in solid metal, with some of the larger pieces cast in resin.
- FAST GAMES, lasting 30-45 minutes, with game models on each side alternating their turns of activation so that all players can stay in the flow of the game.
- SMALL WARBANDS of 5-10 models, so that anyone can have a warband destined for glory without spending a fortune.
- EASY MOVEMENT rules using three simple measurement sticks, but deceptively complex in how movements may be coordinated between models.
- TABLETOP PLAY allows players to build a map on any 1 meter-square surface or less (3' by 3' or 2 by 2' are fine) without the need for a grid. Just add scenery and start the game.
- LITTLE TO NO BOOKKEEPING! The models in a warband are represented by a basic block of two statistics and a few special abilities, weapons and armor.
- CAMPAIGN PROGRESSION allows a warband to increase in power as it wins battles along an epic campaign across environments spanning fungal forests, ruined cities, underground temples, and pressurized underwater citadels.
- MAGIC AND TECHNOLOGY interweave in the Underlands. Warbands may battle using arcane magical spells or ancient technological weapons in the mysterious underground realm.
- ACTION BASED GAMEPLAY means that models have many choices of actions besides simply whacking each other across the skull. Leap chasms, climb pillars, break through walls, set explosives or try something unexpected.
- MULTIPLE UNIQUE FORCES battle in their quest for ancient artifacts. Battle and adventure with heroes, fiends, wild creatures, ethereal demons, ancient mechanical constructs and stygian monsters.
Here is a short gameplay video using the original ShadowSea rules. The updated rules will use the same method for activating models, movement and combat resolution but will have many new weapon types, magic spells, combat tactics and ether tech items that affect gameplay.
AntiMatter Games strives to produce products with the highest quality artwork, miniatures and game design. Our team of artists produced the much lauded DeepWars book, which was filled with color art, including full-color character art and color scenic and story art between sections. For ShadowSea, we will be making the second edition with the same kind of quality and attention to detail, Updating the old ShadowSea rules with the new features from DeepWars, adding new artwork and game mechanics so that they can be played together. We have already begun on the new art pieces, including concept art for the main four forces, and new scenic art. We have also begun sculpting the miniatures for the first three forces.
For an idea of the quality of our work on the rulebooks, here is a section from DeepWars. It is recommended that the section is downloaded before reading instead of reading in a web browser as those can be slow.
Here is also a nice reviews of DeepWars and the game mechanics to be found in ShadowSea here.
Some samples of the artwork and sculpting is shown below. As new miniatures are completed, their pictures will be added to the starter sets in the reward section.
The pictures above show the hi-gaming quality. Here is another example of the quality level. http://antimatter-games.com/kick/painted_hi-res.jpg
The high-end pledges may include a 24"x24"' battleboard from Battleboards.UK, custom made to your specifications. An example of the detail of these boards is shown below. Note: the DeepWars board is 36"x36". DeepWars and ShadowSea can be played on smaller maps as well as larger ones.
If the project is funded, we will continue to add additional stretch goals to achieve so that we can create more products for ShadowSea. Stretch items are intended to be produced at the same time as the core project items, although some may take longer. Any additional time to complete any stretch items will be estimated and noted for that item. In general though, we expect to finish stretch items in the same time period as the main project.
If we can manage to get past the main starter sets, we will introduce individual models from the forces, then the supplemental areas with dungeon tiles and new rulebooks (Stygian Depths, Sunless Catacombs, and Sunken Citadel), as well as other mercenary-style forces for the Order or Yosoth, and the Stygian snakemen and demons.
The first of the new supplement books is an updated version of the Stygian Depths, with refined gameplay, focusing on the dungeons of the Stygian snakemen and their demonic associates.
Risks and challenges
There are many steps to completing this project but we feel that we can manage it well. This will be our third funded Kickstarter project. The other two produced rewards that shipped in a timely manner, with few delays to the core funded products. Being able to complete these projects makes us confident in our ability to once again produce a top quality rulebook and miniatures within a short time window.
The biggest challenge we expect will be in timing all of the different aspects of design so that they reach completion at expected deadlines. We have learned though our our previous projects that issues do occur during production and to leave sufficient time and funds to mitigate the issues. Sculpting miniatures takes time, upwards of weeks or months in some cases, so we have organized the sculptors to work on different parts of the starter sets to improve production speed. Book design also takes a great deal of time, from writing the text, designing interior art and editing, so that task is handled separately from the miniatures in order to be completed at the same time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
