Deep in the heart of the underground realm of ShadowSea, the Draconid Legion has been steadily growing in number and in strength. Explorers to the deep caverns have said that these reptilian demons were similar in appearance to dragons of legend, armored in heavy scales with some winged and able to attack from the skies, while others walking upon two legs in a horrible mockery of humanity. All of them showed cunning and the ability to communicate, though the largest seemed to posses much more intelligence, learning advanced techniques for designing metal weapons of war from human adventurers that they captured and interrogated in horrific ways. They have also unearthed ancient artifacts and learned many of the secrets of the ethers.
This deadly force is searching for a route to the surface lands, scouring the caverns of the Underlands in a quest to find a pathways to sunlight, and a new world to conquer...
This Kickstarter will help us produce new miniatures for the Draconid Legion, the force of lizardmen, dragon-men, and other scaly beings for our tabletop miniatures game ShadowSea, Conquest of the Underground World. These will be cast in high-quality white metal, with larger models hand-cast in resin. In addition, we will produce a printed painting guide that helps show techniques for painting these scaly monsters by Eric Louchard of www.lonebrushman.net.
Note: Backers can choose to get their rewards from this Kickstarter shipped within 1-2 weeks of the ending if the items are currently produced and in stock. We cannot guarantee that all items will be in stock immediately after the project ends but we will ship as soon as they are cast or printed and are available. All newly produced items and stretch items are targeted for the project ship date.
Shipping costs in this project are for one shipment. Backers with newly produced rewards that want to receive their existing items early will need to pay for the extra cost of two shipments, based on weight of items. This is handled after the kickstarter ends.
This Kickstarter will fund the first of the new draconid models, the Draconid Royal Guard, and the painting guide. Stretch goals will unlock additional draconids needed for the Deluxe Starter Set, as well as miniatures from other forces and scenic terrain.
The painting guide will focus on techniques of painting with glazes and washes, thinned paint and ink that flows into the shadows easily and leave the highlights a lighter color. This is the most effective technique for painting scales, ridged carapaces, and anything with detailed texture. The book will show steps for achieving great results quickly.
Additional items produced
Note: The Sunless Kingdom Deluxe Set will not be ready for early shipping.
The first stretch goals are for Draconid Legion miniatures, finishing up those models that are needed for the Deluxe Starter set. We will also mix in miniatures from other forces, such as the Queen of the Deep for the Dark Mariners and much more, if we can get the funding. As each of these items is unlocked, it can be added to a pledge by either simply adding the dollar amount or using "Bonus Points" that come with certain high-level pledges or acquired by trading in pledge items for points (Deluxe Starter Set = 6 points). Bonus Stretch Goals
ShadowSea, Conquest of the underground World is a game of fast-paced miniatures combat in a lost underground realm, with deadly landscapes of fungal forests, monster-infested caverns and the ruins of mysterious ancient civilizations. The game is played with 28mm scale miniatures and is powered by the renowned Song of Blades ruleset from Ganesha Games. ShadowSea is set in the same world as our game DeepWars but is set on land while DeepWars is entirely underwater. Both games can be combined though, allowing for land and sea adventures.
We recently completed the Kickstarter for the new version of ShadowSea with all new models for three of the main forces, the Fortune Hunters, Dark Mariners and Axibalan Empire. A few of the miniatures just released are below.
There was also the addition of the Dragonblood line of miniatures, which included lizardmen and draconids for the Draconid Legion. It is this group that we wish to build upon.
We have an experienced group of sculptors who have been working on our miniatures, including Patrick Keith, Gautier Giroud, Brother Vinni, Bob Olley, Bobby Jackson, Sandra Garrity and Paolo Fabiani. This group has produced some great sculpts for the last three kickstarter projects we have successfully completed, and will do so again for new miniatures produced for this project.
ShadowSea is designed to be played in different ways, from a simple battle between two or more between players to a cooperative effort of players against a Game Master, or even a solo game against wild creatures and the deadly environment using random encounter tables. Since players can improve their characters and warbands, there is a distinct RPG feel to the game, where even lowly troops can advance and become heroic leaders. Players can even design their own custom models as well as new weapons, armor and ether-tech items using the robust point system included.
ShadowSea is a stand-alone game but is also meant to be complimentary to DeepWars, in that amphibious models or ones in powered dive suits from DeepWars can walk on land and join in land-based adventures in ShadowSea. In this way, owners of both games can design game scenarios that bridge both land and sea, where marine models may patrol the waters while amphibious troops climb from the depths to secure artifacts, and land-based models can dive beneath the waves to open up entry to air-filled structures.
Some of the features of ShadowSea are below:
- FAST GAMES, lasting 30-45 minutes, with game models on each side alternating their turns of activation so that all players can stay in the flow of the game.
- SMALL WARBANDS of 4-8 models, so that anyone can have a warband destined for glory without spending a fortune.
- EASY MOVEMENT rules using three simple measurement sticks, but deceptively complex in how movements may be coordinated between models.
- TABLETOP PLAY allows players to build a map on any small surface (24" by 24" are fine) without the need for a grid. Just add scenery and start the game.
- LITTLE BOOKKEEPING! The models in a warband are represented by a basic block of two statistics and a few special abilities, weapons and armor.
- CAMPAIGN PROGRESSION allows a warband to increase in power as it wins battles along an epic campaign across environments spanning fungal forests, ruined cities, underground temples, and pressurized underwater citadels.
- MAGIC AND TECHNOLOGY interweave in the Underlands. Warbands may battle using arcane magical spells or ancient technological weapons in the mysterious underground realm.
- ACTION BASED GAMEPLAY means that models have many choices of actions besides simply whacking each other across the skull. Leap chasms, climb pillars, break through walls, set explosives or try something unexpected.
- MULTIPLE UNIQUE FORCES battle in their quest for ancient artifacts. Battle and adventure with heroes, fiends, wild creatures, ethereal demons, ancient mechanical constructs and stygian monsters.
Here are a couple of short gameplay videos using the original ShadowSea rules, showing the basics for activation, combat and movement.
Backers get their choice of items depending on their pledge level. Some pledges come with miniature "points" that can be used to choose anything from the initial goals or unlocked by stretch goals. The point-based method allows trading these miniatures for other items. Each miniature on a 30mm base is worth 1 point, but larger miniatures of 40 or 50mm bases can be 2 or more points. The rewards shown below have a point value so backers can pick and choose how to spend their miniature points.
Those that backed the original ShadowSea project (or one of the DeepWars projects) at $50 or higher and back this one at $50 level or higher get one bonus miniature point added to their rewards. Those that backed the original ShadowSea project (or DeepWars) at $225 or higher get 2 bonus points if they back at $225 or more for this one.
Items in the reward levels may be swapped for points to use on other items. Deluxe Starter Sets can be swapped for 6 points, ShadowSea softcover rulebooks for 4 points and hardcover books for 7 points.
Adding to Rewards
One can add any unlocked models, books, terrain and starter sets to the pledge by either adding a monetary amount shown for the item or by spending the extra points that come at different pledge levels. In general, the rewards are priced at around 25-35% less than the expected retail cost of the final products (depending on pledge level), but we may add additional points to the higher pledge levels as we pass stretch goals, which increases the value.
Shipping in the USA is included in pledges. International shipping has an additional expense and may increase if items are added to the total. The amount will be determined after the project time is ended and the project is successfully funded. At that point, the extra items will be assessed by weight using standard USPS shipping tables. For references, a typical metal miniature on a 30 mm base weighs 2 ounces, while softcover rulebooks weigh about 16 ounces. We will not charge any extra fees beyond the USPS shipping fees. ShadowSea Reward Choices
Any backer can choose from any of the unlocked Deluxe Starter Sets (includes 4 metal miniatures and 1 large resin model, game cards, quickstart rules with optional PDF rule download, game counters and measurements sticks) from the list below. Click on the image to pull up a large version.
Miniatures on 30 mm bases are cast in white metal, giving them high detail level and a nice feeling of weight. Larger miniatures of 40 and 50 mm bases are cast in rigid, high-detail resin, the same as our master castings, preserving the maximum level of detail while keeping the weight down.
Anyone pledging in this project can choose to select DeepWars starter sets, miniatures and rulebooks to replace any starter sets and books from ShadowSea, or they can mix and match. Many of the miniatures from DeepWars can be used in on land in ShadowSea, including any Amphibious models. The DeepWars miniatures that are unable to leave the water, having the Marine ability, although ones with powered dive suits can leave the water normally.
All DeepWars miniatures that can be used in ShadowSea with no modifications to the model have a gold coin next to them on the list of "unlocked" reward items that can be chosen by backers
We are offering professionally painted miniatures as an upgrade option. Any miniature can be painted, with work done by Eric of lonebrushman.net and other artists. Typically, painting adds $30 to each 30mm based model, $50-60 for those on 40mm bases, and $100 or more for very large models. See the commission page here for more information http://www.lonebrushman.net/commissions.htm. Contact us to verify the total cost before pledging so we can ensure an accurate quote. Note: painting adds an additional 6-8 weeks for any reward shipment date.
It is also possible to paint miniatures from other manufacturers. Contact us to set up this type of commission as part of a pledge.

If the project is funded, we will continue to add additional stretch goals to achieve so that we can create more products for ShadowSea. Stretch items are intended to be produced at the same time as the core project items, although some may take longer. Any additional time to complete any stretch items will be estimated and noted for that item. In general though, we expect to finish stretch items in the same time period as the main project.
Risks and challenges
There are many steps to completing this project but we feel that we can manage it well. This will be our fourth funded Kickstarter project. The other three produced rewards that shipped in a timely manner, with few delays to the core funded products. Being able to complete these projects makes us confident in our ability to once again produce a top quality rulebook and miniatures within a short time window.
The biggest challenge we expect will be in timing all of the different aspects of design so that they reach completion at expected deadlines. We have learned though our our previous projects that issues do occur during production and to leave sufficient time and funds to mitigate the issues. Sculpting miniatures takes time, upwards of weeks or months in some cases, so we have organized the sculptors to work on different parts of the starter sets to improve production speed. Book design also takes a great deal of time, from writing the text, designing interior art and editing, so that task is handled separately from the miniatures in order to be completed at the same time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
