“The expedition has finally reached the most remote section of the Shadow Sea, an uncharted expanse previously avoided due to the violent storms caused by clouds of glowing ethereal energy swirling above the narrow channel leading there. Only after a fortuitous expedition discovered a route through a river system across an ancient flooded city were we able to circumvent this graveyard of ships and finally emerge into the unexplored waters beyond.
Our first forays into the shallow shelf zone there, an area we now call Blood Reef, have been disastrous however, with losses mounting from attacks of monstrous sea creatures as well as constant attacks by creatures I had only believed to be myth. Tails covered in glittering scales, bodies of nymphs, these could only be the Nereids of legend… Terrible was their wrath at our incursion, with foul sorcery and beams of blue death turning the water crimson in what our men now call Blood Reef. Only the lure of glowing crystals and ancient artifacts abounding in these waters has kept the pirates from mutiny, and there is now word of a strange and terrible craft wrecked in the deeper abyss. We press on and pray that these new enemies may be tamed…“

This Kickstarter will help us produce the Blood Reef game supplement for DeepWars as well as new miniatures for the Nereids, wild sea creatures and tentacled Dark Mariners that lurk in the shadowy depths. The miniatures will be cast in high-quality white metal, with larger models like the Beast of Blood Reef hand-cast in resin. In addition, we are releasing a new version 2.5 of DeepWars and the land-based game, ShadowSea, so Blood Reef will be using these updated rules.
DeepWars is a tabletop wargame using the "Song of Blades" game mechanics (of Ganesha Games) set in an alternate 17th century world, where forces battle below the waves of a lost underground ocean beneath a frozen southern continent, vying for control over ancient sunken ruins and wrecks holding powerful artifacts and golden treasures. Players command warbands in battles that can span long campaigns, developing their warriors as they gain experience though combat, exploration and recovery of treasure.
The new version 2.5 of DeepWars will be be fully compatible with ShadowSea 2.5, "Conquest of the Underground World". ShadowSea is a land-based game where players explored a lost underground realm full of fungal forest, ancient temples and deadly prehistoric wildlife.
The Version 2.5 updates include a more detailed combat system and more combat options, with expanded "wound" tracking for different body part or subsystems, Also, the activation system for models has been made more flexible, so players can choose a basic action or can try to gamble on rolling for more complex actions, Finally, the 2.5 rules have an entire section on running tournaments, complete with scoring and timekeeping, as well as new "Special Operations" than each player gets for a scenario. The Spec-Ops are special missions that a warband can accomplish during a scenario to gain bonus Victory Points.
Game cards for each miniature are being upgraded for version 2.5 as well. They will be tarot sized (4.75 by 2.75 inch), giving more room to include all of the descriptions of Special Abilities, Weapons, Armor and Tech Items. This means much less referencing the rulebook and faster gameplay for all.
Blood Reef Supplement for DeepWars
Blood Reef takes the adventurers of the deep to a remote uncharted area, through a inland route across an ancient flooded city and into a sheltered cove with an immense reef system and steep drop-off into mysterious depths. The supplement introduces a new force for players to use, the Nereids of Blood Reef, and new wild sea creatures that prowl the seas there. The Nereids are amphibious beings, able to operate on the shore and below the waves. This makes them usable in both DeepWars and the land-based game ShadowSea - Conquest of the Underground World. The Nereids are also mercenaries, working for any other force as long as their allies do not damage their reef home.
The supplement will include the following:
- Full stats for the Nereids of the Blood reef force, their Sea Goblin allies and their warbeasts
- New environmental dangers, whirlpools, rip currents, fire coral, Tsunamis, and more.
- Ancient shipwrecks and installations to explore in the abyssal depths and discover the secrets of the ethereal realms.
- New types of ancient artifacts to discover
- New magic spells used by the Nereids that employ the wild creatures of the reef to create havok among enemies, obscuring vision, entangling, and smashing them.
- New characters for each of four main forces
- A host of new Special Abilities, weapons and armor
The primary rewards of the project include the Nereid Miniatures Set (four 32 mm scale metal miniatures). Also included are the PDF versions of the DeepWars 2.5 rules, Blood Reef supplement and the painting guide, "Painting Scaly Beasts". Higher pledge levels include printed versions of the books. The massive resin "Beast of Blood Reef" is included in higher pledge levels or can be included as an additional add-on reward.
Note: The Gamemaster pledge now includes 10 points of reward items
Nereid miniatures are cast in white metal, giving them high detail level and a nice feeling of weight. Larger miniatures like the Beast of Blood Reef are cast in rigid, high-detail resin, preserving the maximum level of detail while reducing weight.
The Miniatures Starter Set includes the Following:
1 x Cymopoleia (30mm base) 1 x Eidothera (30mm base) 1 x Guardian of the Reef (30mm base) 1 x Treasure Seeker (30mm base)
The set comes with game cards for each miniature, printed quickstart rules set, a sheet of game counters, measurement sticks and a Warband Record Sheet.
Nereid Sculpting Progress
The main sculptor the Nereid miniatures is Paolo Fabiani, an amazingly talented artist who has sculpted many of our other miniatures. He has already completed the Guardian of the Reef and is now working on Eidothera. He should be done with all of these models in the next two months.
Another miniature reward option is the Beast of Blood Reef, a huge shark that patrols the shallow reef area and fights for he Nereid force as a Warbeast. This model will be hand-cast in resin for the best possible detail, perfect to see all of the scars on the shark's body and corals on the the base.
Choosing Rewards and the Point System
Backers get their choice of items depending on their pledge level. Some pledges come with miniature "points" that can be used to choose anything from the initial goals or unlocked by stretch goals. The point-based method allows trading these miniatures for other items. Each miniature on a 30 mm base is worth 1 point, but larger miniatures on 40 mm or 50 mm bases can be 2 or more points. The rewards shown below have a point value so backers can pick and choose how to spend their miniature points.
Those that backed any one of our previous projects at $50 or higher and back this one at $45 level or higher get one bonus miniature point added to their rewards. Those that backed a previous project at $225 or higher get 2 bonus points if they back at $225 or more for this one (not including extra international shipping). These bonuses are not cumulative.
Items in the reward levels may be swapped for points to use on other items. The Nereid Starter Set or Warband Starter Sets can be swapped for 4 points each, Softcover DeepWars rulebooks can be swapped for 3 points, hardcover rulebooks for 7 points and the softcover Blood Reef supplement for 1 point.
Adding to Rewards
One can add any unlocked models, books, terrain and starter sets to the pledge by either adding a monetary amount shown for the item or by spending the extra points that come at different pledge levels..
We are teaming up with Braveadventures.com to produce paper miniatures for the Shallow Shelf zone wild sea creatures, including the massive Beast of Kronos, shown below. These come as a PDF file to be printed and constructed and allow players to add as many wild creatures as they need.
We also have new vinyl mats printed with a detailed reef scene by Lord Zsezse Works. The mats are thin and easy to roll up but are tough and resistant to wear. The mats come in two sizes, 24"x24" and 36"x36". The scale of the scene will be the same in both, but the larger mat just has more reef.
The vinyl mats will look like the other mats available now, such as the Sunken Bio-Sub mat below
DeepWars and ShadowSea Rewards
Click on the links below to see additional reward options. Note: All DeepWars miniatures that can be used in ShadowSea with no modifications to the model have a gold coin next to them on the list of "unlocked" reward items that can be chosen by backers
Those that purchased the older version of the rulebooks all get new versions of the PDF rules. We also have a book upgrade plan, where people who have old rulebooks can purchase new V2.5 rulebooks at 40% off, but only from the main Antimatter-Games website. That large of a discount reduces usable funding in this project to negligible amounts, so we prefer to keep it outside Kickstarter. For those that want to upgrade, just sent us a message and we can send the link to order the new books.Book Upgrades.
Game Card Upgrades
If a backer would like to get new game cards for models already on hand, each card can be added for $0.50. This can be directly added to the pledge.
Shipping costs in the USA are included in pledges. International shipping has an additional expense shown in the pledge description. We have an agreement with Gamesquest in the UK to handle fulfillment to the EU so that VAT and other fees are included in the pledge.
If a backer adds more items to a standard pledge level, shipping may increase. The amount can be calculated by weight using standard USPS shipping tables. For references, a typical metal miniature on a 30 mm base weighs 2 ounces, while softcover rulebooks weigh about 16 ounces. We will not charge any extra fees beyond the USPS shipping fees.
Shipping costs in this project are for one shipment. Backers with newly produced rewards that want to receive their existing items early will need to pay for the extra cost of two shipments, based on weight of items. This is handled after the kickstarter ends.
International shipping rates with USPS have recently changed. For most rewards of a few miniatures, we ship using a padded envelope to save on shipping costs. Printed books are included in boxed shipments but not envelopes, and are instead shipped directly from the UK printer for EU backers, saving a larger amount overall.
Note: Backers can choose to get their rewards from this Kickstarter shipped within 4 weeks of the ending if the items are currently produced and in stock. We cannot guarantee that all items will be in stock immediately after the project ends but we will ship as soon as they are cast or printed and are available. All newly produced items and stretch items are targeted for the project ship date.
If the project is funded, we will continue to add additional stretch goals to achieve so that we can create more products for ShadowSea. Stretch items are intended to be produced at the same time as the core project items, although some may take longer. Any additional time to complete any stretch items will be estimated and noted for that item. In general though, we expect to finish stretch items in the same time period as the main project.
We also have bonus points that are added to pledges as we hit certain milestones. These points are used for items from above or stretch items as they are unlocked.
We have some scenery for the first stretch goals, including 30mm diameter treasure markers and a massive 240mm long whale carcass for the deep Abyssal Zone.
The $10000 stretch goal is the Triton Berserker, a massive Nereid male warrior, bred for battle through arcane magic. This model will be 90 mm long, twisting its length around the base and will be sculpted by Paolo Fabiani.
Next comes another piece of deadly scenery, the Doom Clam, an enormous bivalve that can suck in unwary divers.
The next stretch goal will add a pair of nasty little Sea Goblins to the Nereid force, amphibious beasties that can help surround and take down larger enemies. These are to be sculpted by the legendary Kevin Adams and come as a pair.
For $13000, we are adding a coral reef section. These are sculpted at very high detail using two bases of the Beast of Blood Reef and adding more coral.
The next stretch goal will unlock Amatheia - Caller of the Deep, a leader of warbeasts and wild sea creatures in a Nereid warband. Amatheia swims with a vicious hammerhead shark for defense and holds its dorsal fin to get extra speed, making her equivalent to a mounted model. This will be a large, detailed resin piece with two separate bases.
Another stretch goal is to unlock the small but deadly Ravenous Cordoba Squid, and 6-foot squid with a sharp beak and a bad temperament. This one has been sculpted by Celestino Angiolilli and needs to be cast. It fits on a 30mm plastic base.
Next up is the imposing Icthelion, Lord of the Seas, a Sea Shaman that can summon wild sea creatures to fight for the Nereid Icthelion is the largest of the Nereids and will be a resin casting on a 50mm base.
A bonus stretch goal has been unlocked, the Proto Spawn of Yosoth. These ethereal beings can be summoned by an Ethermancer to fight for a warband, driving enemies to madness.
Next is Kalypso, the Hidden one. This Nereid has mastered bio-technology and has developed many deadly poison bio-weapons.
Next up is the Sea Goblin Poacher, a sneaky little creature that carries a stringer of snappers and sack of chum it uses to entice schools of fish and sharks to surround and attack enemies.
Up next is the Siren Maneater for the Dark Mariners. These deadly female mariners are able to lure enemies in close and paralyze them with toxic venom, consuming them at their leisure. This model will be on a 30mm base.
The next stretch goal will unlock the Dagathonan Reef Lord, a Leader model for the Scaly Horde carrying a giant crab shell shield and weaing crab and lobster shell armor.
Next up is a terrifying warbeast of the Nereid force, the Sea Serpent. This ancient creation from serpents and ethereal dragons is difficult to control but can kill quickly with its highly toxic venom while resisting extremes of heat and cold.
Up next is one of the most intelligent and colorful of the Nereid warbeasts, the Giant Mantis Shrimp. This crustacean has been enhanced through ethereal magic to be massive in size and to follow commands. It is armed with spear-like appendages which can impale enemies or with club arms that crush with lighting-fast strikes. Both arm options will come with the model, which will be cast in resin and be around 100 mm long.
The next stretch goal is the massive Silver Death fish, (otherwise known as the Xiphactinus for those paleo enthusiasts). this 20 foot long fish speeds though the water, slicing off limbs and gulping down divers. It is not easy to control though, and may turn on its handlers when blood is in the water.
Now we get one more addition to the Sea Goblins, the mighty Sea Troll. This hunter of the shallow reefs carries a crude harpoon and kelp rope that it uses to catch big fish, sharks and divers. This model will be approximately 60mm tall and will be cast in resin.
Risks and challenges
There are many steps to completing this project but we feel that we can manage it well. This will be our fifth funded Kickstarter project. The others produced rewards that shipped in a timely manner, with few delays to the core funded products. Being able to complete these projects makes us confident in our ability to once again produce a top quality book and miniatures within a short time window.
The biggest challenge we expect will be in timing all of the different aspects of design so that they reach completion at expected deadlines. We have learned though our our previous projects that issues do occur during production and to leave sufficient time and funds to mitigate the issues. Sculpting miniatures takes time, upwards of weeks or months in some cases, so we have organized the sculptors to work on different parts of the starter sets to improve production speed. Book design also takes a great deal of time, from writing the text, designing interior art and editing, so that task is handled separately from the miniatures in order to be completed at the same time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
