About this project
In this sweet tale about a young girl who loses her two front teeth, the girl's mother encourages her daughter to eat various vegetables every day. Little Zoe learns to appreciate healthy snacks as she anxiously awaits the growth of new teeth until (spoiler alert) “magic” peas seem to do the trick.
The Magic Peas story is complimented by beautiful illustrations made from 20 oil paintings. The combination of an amusing story and vibrant images adds up to hours of entertainment subtly reinforced with a message to choose healthy snacks.

Please help Magic Peas & Two Front Teeth get printed
After all the time spent to create Magic Peas and Two Front Teeth, it’s time to get it printed into a full-color hardcover first edition. But I can't do this without your help. Please help me reach my goal by pledging for rewards, and sharing this campaign with everyone you know. Anything you can do will help. Click on any of the rewards listed to the right, or for a visual summary, scroll down to "Rewards" to see all the Magic Peas offerings.
When you are a writer, you never know what tiny life detail is going to spark a story.
One night while tucking in my daughter for the night, we were chatting about her missing teeth. Yes, you guessed it…her two front baby teeth had fallen out. She was so excited about getting “big girl” teeth. My curious girl asked question after question about when her new teeth would grow in. She especially wanted to know how she could make those teeth appear more quickly.
Call it sneaky, but sometimes parents must become creative when they have a child who is a finicky eater. I used that opportunity to suggest that she eat healthy snacks as fuel for her body—specifically, her teeth—to grow strong. And there it was. Crash, bang, sparkle, boom! I had a new children’s story (and now, it seems, the title of another book).
Every child loses their baby teeth making Zoe a relatable character. First, she shows how the loss of baby teeth is a natural process and not something to fear. And equally important, during a time when childhood obesity has become a growing concern, I envision this story as a tool parents can use to encourage their children to choose healthy snacks.
The Magic Peas Companion Activity Book
What began as a few extra PDFs to offer as rewards turned into a companion book with more than 100 pages brimming with fun activities reinforcing the message to eat healthy foods.
Rewards offer your choice of a 3-Pack PDF (easy, intermediate, or challenging levels), or the activity paperback book containing a huge selection of full-color activity sheets in graduating levels, plus 54 "Snacks and Sides" cards (see below). The activity sheets are suitable for children ranging in grades preschool through elementary school. Everything in the book relates to fruits and vegetables broken into snacks and sides groupings. Activities include:
- Mazes / multi-player games
- Color-by-number pages (easy levels match numbers to colors; more advanced levels include simple math problems to solve the number)
- Word searches / word scrambles / create words / story time
- Counting / shopping math / secret codes / crossword puzzles
- Picture searches / picture-word matching,
- Drawing lessons / finding the difference
- Connect-the-numbers pictures
In addition to a “Snack and Sides Diary” where children can keep track of new healthy snacks they try, there’s also a shopping list cut-out they take with them when they visit the market. Also, there are dozens of beautifully illustrated snacks and sides cards they can cut out and use to expand their knowledge of healthy foods while encouraging them to try something new and participate in planning healthy meals.
Magic Peas and Two Front Teeth will be my second published children’s book that I wrote and illustrated. I also have a nonfiction memoir I wrote (for adults).
I grew up around fine artists: my grandfather was a sculptor, and my mom and sister are painters (you can see our family art at 4GenerationArtists.com). I've won several top awards for my paintings and photography, and I taught art at an elementary school. While being a writer defines who I am and what I love to do, I must say, teaching art was the most fun job I've ever had.
It was a natural fit to create my own illustrations for my books. While I used acrylic paintings for my first children’s book, thanks to my sister’s guidance, I have since discovered great joy from using oils for the paintings in Magic Peas. I love using vibrant colors for my paintings, and the oils deliver that rich expression of color.
Below shows the development of a possible cover for the book. The cover was changed, as did the scope and release of this book when I decided to try Kickstarter to fund a hardcover edition. (Always, dream big!)

Custom illustrations rewards information
If this project is funded and you have pledged any of the custom art rewards (Refrigerator Art, Plush Friend, Wildlife, or Guest Appearance), you must provide a photograph (several would be better) of the subject within one month of the closing date. Large format e-mailed images are preferred. Keep in mind, the faster I get the images, the more quickly the book goes to print. Images must be family-friendly, and as the illustrator/artist, I have final discretion regarding size, design and placement of the artwork.
Refrigerator Art is the only custom illustration that will be a scan of your child's original artwork (please, no cartoon or other pop characters restricted by copyright law). And yes, it will be displayed on the large refrigerator in the kitchen scene with Zoe.
Plush Friend and Wildlife: The stuffed animals will be painted into the bedroom scenes. Your dog or cat can be used as choices for the pets in various scenes.
Guest Appearance: Send an image of your child to be painted into the bedroom scene below. Your child will become the subject of the poster featured on Zoe's bedroom wall. Does your child dream of becoming a rock star or a sports star? Or perhaps Zoe's BFF, or a great scientist? If you are the lucky one to pledge for this single spot, you can choose the family-friendly poster theme. (Again, the final design is created at my discretion.)
Custom Oil Painting: Send an image to be painted as an oil painting. Wrapped canvas, likely 11" x 14," but canvas size will be determined according to provided image. Please allow approximately six to eight months for painting to be completed. Oils require extra drying time, but they are worth the wait! I encourage you to look at my art portfolio at 4GenerationArtists.com to see my style of painting.
Magic Peas & Two Front Teeth: If you would like to add more printed editions of Magic Peas & Two Front Teeth, please add $25 per copy.
Snacks and Sides Activity Book: If you would like to add more printed editions the Snacks and Sides Activity Book, please add $15 per copy.
Many of the rewards offer mention of your name online or in the book. It's your choice how to display your given name and surname (full name, or use of initials). Anonymous pledging is also available. Please, just let me know your preference.
I'm more of a visual person, so pictured below is a summary of rewards that may help you choose the perfect reward for you.
I’ve invested hundreds of hours toward the writing and illustration of this book, and now I need that extra financial push to publish Magic Peas. I’ve already published two books, so I am very familiar with the publishing, marketing and distribution process. Principally, Kickstarter funds will go towards paying for the infrastructure most large publishers have at their disposal. Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
I have a planned timeline to complete this project and fulfill rewards, but as with any publishing project, there may be unexpected delays. As well, the process could be shortened if few or no custom rewards illustration paintings (Stuffed, Wildlife, or Guest Appearance) are pledged. The check marks show what is complete.
What will Kickstarter funds pay for?
- Final book design and production fees
- Funds to cover initial bulk printing of full color, hardcoverMagic Peasbook, and the paperback Snacks and Sides Activity Book
- Reward fulfillment/shipping
- Converting book to digital format
- Kickstarter and Amazon fees (10%)
- (Perhaps, a book launch)
What if you exceed your funding goal?
Eventually, I have plans to transform the book and the accompanying activity book into a fun, interactive app for children. That may become a stretch goal or a separate Kickstarter.
As well, in crash, bang, sparkle, boom fashion, I have another Zoe story waiting in the wings to be developed into another illustrated book.

Thank you for your support!
I can’t thank you enough for supporting the Magic Peas Kickstarter campaign. I am really looking forward to bringing Zoe’s story to life, getting a chance to promote it, and making some contribution to encouraging healthy eating habits while offering a delightful aid for my fellow parents of finicky eaters. Creating this book is one of the most gratifying and rewarding projects I've ever worked on.
Risks and challenges
I have published two books prior to the Magic Peas book. Therefore, I’m familiar with the production of print and digital books. With your help, I can print the first edition. As with any book, there is always the possibility of experiencing unintentional production delays. Still, I don't anticipate any issues with completing this project in a timely fashion.
If for any reason I am not able to deliver the Magic Peas rewards as scheduled, I will contact backers and provide a timeline for receipt of books and other rewards.
