Welcome to the unfathomable world. This is a land hidden to most, not because they cannot find it but because they refuse to see it. This is a world filled with the marvellous, the splendour of all beings both magical and not. It is a world brimming with both advances in technology and the reliance of the old ways. A place where the main thriving branches either cling onto their steam powered machinery or the wonders of runes, gods, spirits and of course the brute force of man. A place where Vikings could raid a town only to find the inhabitants have scarpered in an air ship with their mechanical servants to hand. This world cannot be contained within the imagination of your average civilian. Take a look around you, not everything is what it seems. This world is what lies behind the blanket we all see as everyday life, and our guide through this unfathomable world will be none other than Eagan D. Wynningdale.
Eagan is a travelling artist, he spent most of his youth lusting after adventure, with every departure he would take a selection of materials and sketchbooks, adamant to capture what wonders he found. Before long he began to be recognised by people with power, members of the Centre of Intelligence to be exact; and let's just say, they encouraged his travels. They used his research and findings in any way they saw fit. Eagan soon began to notice that the C.o.I. had been twisting his researching, using it for their own benefit and hiding the truth from the world. So this time Eagan has decided not to report in, but instead to keep a secret journal of his artwork and writings on what he has found. This research he is willing to share with you, the real enthusiasts of this Unfathomable world.
The book is a combination of artwork (drawings, sketches and paintings) and short writings, all about the characters Eagan has met and the experiences he has come across. This is NOT a novel but snippets, notes, short stories, some even paragraphs of information from Eagan.
I have the majority of artwork finished and the writing is planned out, however, I intend to continue working on a few more pieces for the book and therefore I cannot give an exact page count but I will be aiming for 50 pages at least. The book will be approximately 10" x 8" landscape and paperback.
In order to reduce the cost of the book I will be handling all of the design aspects myself and have searched for the best quality and price of self publishing within the UK. As a thank you to all of the supporters I will also include a page with thanks to each of you, as well as people that helped to promote the campaign etc.
My name is Wayne Danting-Langdale, I have been illustrating since 2014 and in all honesty I have moved around within the discipline trying to discover what I love the most about illustration. My first steps into illustration was creating a book for my wife, and although it took me a while I have eventually looped back to realising book illustrations and characters are where my passions lie. I have always been a happy sketcher and after playing with many materials throughout my education I finally taught myself how to use watercolour and ink in 2014 and it quickly became my specialism.
I have always had a passion for other worlds, the idea of escapism and imagining what could be on the other side of the wall. A geek at heart with a love of Harry Potter, Star Wars and LotR, a steampunk and a viking, how could I not go in this route to be fair. This is my first Kickstarter, my first art book... well let's put it this way, this is the biggest task I have ever set myself. With the success of this project you will have helped me leap into what I love doing, making it actually possible to do what I love for a living. I am tremendously thankful for you even getting this far, even if you are not in the position to support the project I would be very appreciative if you could share it as the more people hear about the work the better.
I'll be honest, thinking of rewards wasn't easy, I mean obviously the book is a given, but otherwise it took a lot of research. What do people want? Well, not only the book but there is a digital copy (PDF), postcards, original sketches/paintings and even commissions. Depending on how the project goes I may even add to these options.
At the minute my goal is simple, reach the target. Anything passed that I would be amazed by. That doesn't mean I have not thought about the tiny possibility that we surpass the target by enough to reach a stretch goal though...
For now, I'll just mention the closest stretch goal:
If I reach £3,000 - Each backer will receive an additional 4 postcards.
(Additional pages in the book, additional art, additional bonus rewards and many more are written down and planned for, but let's take it one step at a time.)
As I mentioned, I'll be doing as much as possible for this project myself to remove the costs of hiring people etc. That means I can reduce the price of the book, but as you can see the biggest costs will be on the production and the shipping. I pulled it together below to try and give you a better idea.
Risks and challenges
This is my first ever Kickstarter, so I'll have that as a challenge to start with, figuring all of this out. Also, although I have the majority of the content I still have a few more pieces I want to make for the book so managing my time will be another challenge. Organising the rewards and where to send them etc will be another challenge.
Now, if I haven't made it clear, I do like honesty, so I'll be keeping you updated throughout and I never do things by half so I've found myself in at the deep end a lot, but realistically, I think that's where I thrive.
This project has been, is and still will be my priority. I will be putting my all into this project and making sure I hit deadlines and if by some crazy scenario there are any issues I will work my socks off to resolve them.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
