We're excited to announce that we've been programmed to play in the Narrative Competition at the 2017 Slamdance Film Festival!
The festival, launched in 1995 as an alternative to Sundance, has included showings of such notable titles as Oren Peli’s “Paranormal Activity.” Other Slamdance alumni include Christopher Nolan, Marc Forster, Jared Hess, Lena Dunham, Benh Zeitlin, Seth Gordon, and Lynn Shelton.
Of course, participating in this festival won't come cheap. So, with just a few hours left in the campaign, we're aiming to reach $15,000. This will enable us to create new posters and postcards for the festival, and to send some of the team down to Park City to work towards getting the movie distribution, so that it can be shared with as many people as possible!
WEXFORD PLAZA accepted into the Torino Film Festival!
Founded in 1982, the Torino Film Festival is one of the world’s most respected festivals, with a reputation for identifying and championing the works of filmmakers with new and unique voices. We’re super excited for Wexford Plaza to be playing the Festa Mobile section, which over the last two years has included: Brooklyn (John Crowley), The Theory of Everything (James Marsh), Whiplash (Damien Chazelle), Tangerine (Sean Baker) and Wild (Jean-Marc Vallée).
Betty’s life is pretty lonely. Most of her friends have gone off to college, and she’s still stuck in Scarborough, working as a security guard at a dilapidated strip mall. While a glimmer of hope appears when a charming bartender begins to show her kindness, an unexpected sexual encounter ends up causing both of their lives to unravel.
What does it mean to come of age in a time when cell phones and social media keep us permanently tethered to our peers and their successes, but yet can also make us feel completely isolated, like the whole world is a million miles away? And how do we find meaning in our lives when we’re spending most of our time just struggling to make it through the day? I’ve spent a great deal of time thinking about the culture that exists in the landscape of forgotten strip malls from ‘60s Americana. While at one point a demonstration of the future – the new town square of cookie-cutter suburbia – over the decades they’ve become stripped of their idealism and filled with people who are economically left behind. Although the American dream has been laid bare, they still believe in its romanticism. The firm belief that “if you try harder, somehow you are going to make it”. Wexford Plaza is about two people who are struggling to make sense of their existence. While we get the impression that their efforts are futile, the characters’ whole-hearted belief in what they’re doing gives us a window into the complexities of modern adolescence, and its unique mix of humour and sadness.

At the end of the day, we want to share this story with as many people as possible, through film festivals and an eventual public release. We're really proud of the film's Torino premiere, and expect that we'll have many more exciting festival announcements in the future!
Joyce Wong | Writer, Director, Producer
Joyce Wong’s previous films include: THE POWER OF LOVE (CELINE DION FANS IN KENYA), which screened at Hot Docs in 2010, EMBODYING TORONTO, which won WIFT-T’s “Most Innovative Film by a Female Director Award” at the Toronto Urban Film Festival in 2009, SOUVENIRS FROM ASIA, which won Outstanding Canadian Short at the Reelworld Film Festival, and BANANA BRUISES, which won Best Fiction Short at York University’s Cinesiege Film Festival in 2006. Joyce graduated from York University with a BFA in Film Production in 2007, participated in the Berlinale Talent Campus in 2008, and the Toronto International Film Festival’s Talent Lab in 2016. Her work has been supported by the Canada Arts Council and Ontario Council for the Arts. WEXFORD PLAZA is her first feature, and is based on her memories of growing up in Scarborough.
Matt Greyson | Producer
Matt Greyson is a Toronto-based feature film and music video producer. He graduated from York University's Film Production program along with Joyce. He's a long term collaborator of Matt Johnson as the assistant director on The Dirties and Operation Avalanche and the field producer on VICE's new scripted comedy Nirvanna the Band the Show. He's produced music videos for Canada's top musicians in July Talk, Born Ruffians and Tokyo Police Club that have been featured on MTV and MuchMusic. Wexford Plaza is Matt's first feature film.
Harry Cherniak | Producer
Harry’s most recent short film, Winter Hymns, won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2016 Slamdance Film Festival, making it eligible for a 2017 Academy Award nomination. While working for four years as a corporate lawyer, Harry produced three short films: Soap (TIFF '09, CBC), Pathways (TIFF '11), Broken Heart Syndrome (TIFF '12, Air Canada, CBC, Virgin Atlantic). Harry recently began working as the Director of Business Affairs for Darius Films, and also just completed his 10th TIFF as a publicist for Star PR (Mongrel Media). Additionally, Harry serves on the board of directors of Toronto’s Inside Out LGBT Film Festival.
Maya Bankovic | Director of Photography
Maya Bankovic is a Toronto-based cinematographer. She received her BFA from York University’s Department of Film & Video, where she graduated with Distinction in her specialization in cinematography. Her fiction and documentary work has screened at over one hundred film festivals worldwide, including TIFF, VIFF, Hot Docs, Sundance, RIDM, AFI Silverdocs and BFI Flare. In 2010 she was invited to the Berlinale as a participating cinematographer in the festival’s Talent Campus. That same year she was awarded the Kodak Award for Best Cinematography by the Canadian Film Centre for the dance film SLIP. She is currently an Associate Member of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers.
Where The Money Will Go
While the movie’s already been filmed and edited using a combination of arts council grants and the production team’s personal debt, there are still a lot of costs yet to be incurred!
To begin with, we’ll need to submit the film to all of the world’s top festivals. We’ve been able to obtain a number of fee waivers, but at an average submission cost of $100 per festival, we’re anticipating another $3,000 of costs here. Next we’ll need to create a high quality screening drive, known as a DCP, so that Wexford Plaza can be shown at all of the film festivals it’s accepted to. Unfortunately, they’re not cheap, with an economical version still being around $3,000. There’s also the cost of shipping the drive to festivals, which we expect to be at least $1,500. Next, we’ll have to ensure that the movie’s well promoted at the festivals, with the goal of getting press and finding a distribution partner to help us reach our audience. We expect to spend $500 on postcards to be distributed at all of the festivals, $500 on the poster, and $1,000 on the trailer. As well, we need to finalize the sound for $2,000 and do a final colour pass and outputs for $2,000.
