People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is...to walk on earth. ~Thich Nhat Hanh Read more

About this project
Hi! I'm Holly Bernabe and I'm walking solo across America next year. Come again? Yeah, you read that right. I am walking across America solo, no support vehicle, no dog to keep me company. Just little ol' me.
What on earth would I want to do that for? Am I a woman going through a mid-life crisis? Nah. Not any more than any other middle aged woman.
Am I crazy for doing something like this? Well...yeah. Pretty much. But it's a good kind of crazy. There are many varieties of crazy folks out there. I'm the kind where people say "but you can't do that" and then they whisper behind my back and shake their heads in consternation. Then the next thing you know, I'm inventing a flying machine. Or curing a disease. Or walking on the moon. In other words, I'm the kind of crazy that doesn't let people tell me what I can't do and then I go and do something unexpected, something beyond most people's comfort zones, something monumental. And in so doing, crazies like me help foster growth, whether personal, familial, spiritual and/or societal.
The plan is to document my progress, as well as meet with other people who have crossed the US on foot and interview them for my documentary. I am fascinated by what drives people like me to do these crazy things. I want to know why they did it, how they did it, what they learned, and how it changed them. And every person I've talked to has said the journey has changed them. I want to see how our experiences differ and what we collectively learned about this country. I want to meet the people of America, and get to know this continent in a way I never have before. I want to share that learning with other people.
Check out my blog at hollybernabe.wordpress.com to learn more about me, my training (I started training already and I've lost 22 pounds from my efforts so far) and preparation for the walk and my planning for the documentary. See my tentative route plan and leave comments!
My food and shelter needs are pretty much taken care of for the trip, but I do need money for equipment, supplies, obtaining film crews to help me out with filming in certain key cities and for interviews, transportation to some of the people who aren't directly on my route, and for a way for me to get home.
People who donate will get some cool rewards! I have listed a bunch of nifty rewards for your donations, the more you donate, the better your reward! Most of the rewards will be given at some point during my walk, which will be from April through November of 2012. However, there are several that involve post-production, like access to footage, DVD's, tickets to the premiere, etc. These items will not be available right away because post-production takes a lot of time. I'm doing most of this on my own, which is a painstaking process. I have estimated a finish date of June 2014.
Please be advised if you are new to Kickstarter--if my entire goal of $5000 is not reached in the time allotted, then I will not get a penny of that, and you won't be charged on your credit card/debit card. That means it is really important for me to reach that goal! Please share this campaign with your friends and encourage them to donate!
Kickstarter campaigns can go over the goal just fine. $5000 is the minimum I feel I need to do a decent job for the doc. Kickstarter and Amazon both take a cut of the donations, too, so the more I go over, the more I'll have for the documentary and the better quality I can make it.
The month of December is the month of my birth. Please help me celebrate my birthday by donating to my campaign! It would be great if my goal was met and surpassed by the end of December! Thanks!
