Let me begin by saying this is a personal initiative by Philip Fairweather and my team at Invention Intention.  This initiative is not on behalf of my current employer. It is an extension of my life's work as an entrepreneur, inventor, community activist, academic and lover of humanity.

The Invention Intention 3rd Dimension is a full production 3D printing lab. Designed and developed to provide education and access to 3D technology. Our Lab aims to reduce violence in under served communities of Chicago's South and West Side by providing economic alternatives to recidivism and counterproductive behavior. We increase technical job skills and reduce concentrated poverty by stimulating economic development.  Participants will learn how to design and develop new products to bring to market. The field test was done through a partnership with UIUC's Marketplace Literacy program.  Invention Intention is an evolution of that program through collaboration and partnership.

Marketplace Literacy is a pilot program for maker literacy in an effort to develop the first accredited maker curriculum ever. Working in partnership with The University of Illinois Urbana Champaign we are attempting to develop the next generation of inventors and manufacturers. The Maker Lab and Mastering the Marketplace Initiative are part of the Illinois Marketplace and Maker Literacy Program (https://immlp.illinois.edu/) a special initiative of the University of Illinois Extension.

ii3D will engage and accept organizational members such as schools and non profit organizations. The students of those organizations will learn how to assemble a 3D printer which the organization will then inherit. This will allow them to create their own STEM programming and enhance advanced learning. Students will practice their design skills by developing and printing recognition awards and trophies for their respective schools.

Through community outreach we will focus our energy on at risk youth16 years and older.  Members of the lab will learn and apply practical skills in design, advanced manufacturing and entrepreneurship.  Members will learn how to proto-type their own ideas, as well as, support the local manufacturing base in and around Chicago. Our students will go through a training and qualification process in order to incubate viable 3D printing businesses.

Our participants are currently learning on low end Makerbot 3D printers.  In order to produce higher quality products, we need multi-material printers.  We are attempting to raise $40K from supporters like you, who believe in our goal and the power of this evolving technology.  The money we raise from this campaign will allow us to purchase these printers and continue to build out our lab.  We can't do this without you!!!

.

Risks and challenges

Potential risks are, lower education levels in low income communities presenting a smaller pool of program participants with the aptitude to grasp the more complex concepts in design technology, engineering and advanced manufacturing. A good way to address educational challenges are through experiential learning and early "wins" by producing a product. Quickly generating revenue for the participant in the way of a job or business is the best way. It inspires them to continue learning.

Another risk is to not raise enough money to acquire the necessary equipment to produce quality products. We will address this issue by taking the learning from this campaign and readjusting our strategy for our next crowdfunding campaign. Once we raise enough money to purchase the equipment we will leverage our position for additional fundraising.
