About this project
Help me enlighten the world about the endangered Loggerhead sea turtle! With funding, I can continue the series of eight total Loggerhead turtle paintings! For $12,000.00, I intend to paint the next painting, at approximately 4 X 6 feet, depending on which painting we choose. I am so excited about the beauty these paintings will have- the natural habitat is incredible and will lend itself to dramatic compositions Two paintings are already done.
I am searching for funding to complete this series- one painting at a time. The paintings will depict mind-bending situations the Loggerhead turtle faces as a species:
1) Hatching (painting yet to be done)
2) Struggling toward light (entitled, “Faith”, a 40"x 50" oil on canvas)
3) Together making their way over undulating sand (entitled, “Together”, a 32"x 48" oil on canvas)
4) Touching the sea for the first time
(yet to be done)
5) Pursuing his typical meal (yet to be done)
6) Encountering dangers in the deep- natural and manmade (turtles are accidentally killed by the thousands in commercial fishing industries) (yet to be done)
7) A couple swimming together (yet to be done)
8) The female victoriously returning to nest
(yet to be done)
And these paintings are to be large oil paintings on Belgium linen canvas; I would like to paint them 3 X 4 feet or larger, depending on funding. The money will be spent on supplies- including wooden stretchers, rolls of canvas, paints, mediums, brushes, palette knives, research, photography, travel, drawings and acrylic paintings, time at the easel, transportation of works to art show; as well as your rewards: prints, t-shirts, puzzles, Giclees, Lithographs, and shipping.
But I need your advice and support to begin the next painting. Your contribution is both to fund and to vote for which moment you prefer me to paint next. The rewards are great- you get to vote, watch the creative process, and some rewards include an original sketch and/or a print or Giclee from the finished painting and a special invitation to the final art show for the series.
The sheer will to survive drives all species of creatures on this planet to face a myriad of obstacles, and endure- but none is more mirrored in our souls than the plight of the Loggerhead turtle. Perhaps we feel this kinship because they are literally “at our feet”- observable with our own eyes- and yet their voyage pits them against physical boundaries, both manmade and natural. We can witness them struggle out of their sand nest, disappear into a vast ocean and only after the females re-enter the realm of sand twenty or more years later, do we participate as observers in the will to continue the species. I want to share this exploration through art, into the delicate life cycle of the loggerhead turtle.
The first two paintings are done- and their images are etched in my heart. I have seen people drawn to the hope the paintings represent- and to the beauty our God provides. With your help, we can launch this new endeavor to begin the creative process, order the art supplies, stretch the canvas and share in the legwork to get the right composition using sketches and photos. You will get to see how the research is going and the steps in sketching and painting…if I am successful in being funded.
The next painting could be the moment the baby struggles headlong into his first wave. Can you imagine this seminal meeting? The hatchling is buffeted by a new force and yet pulled instantly into it, paddling and pushing as hard as he can. I have so many ideas to explore! Remember, if the funding is not successful and I do not meet my goal, this will only remain a dream until I can afford to spend time and monies on it later. Please help! Send this to as many friends and family as you can- anyone interested in nature and or in art. When I found this venue- Kickstarter- I was blown away by the potential to help people make art!
Remember, you are the key! Any amount is so appreciated- and if you are like me, you may want to pick more than one reward- good for you! If this is funded, I am on course to finish six more paintings to delineate the adventures of the loggerhead turtle- hopefully, by the end of the year. If this does not reach funding, however, this dream will perish. Let's start on the first of the six "Will to Survive" paintings and join the two already painted- eight powerful works that tell the story of the endangered Loggerhead turtle.
