About this project
Journey Behind-the-Scenes of NASA with Professional Photographic Artist and Photojournalist Chris Haber as you see NASA as you've never seen it before.
The book "After the Shuttle: An Artist's Inside View of Post-Shuttle NASA" (working title), by photographic artist Chris Haber will take you on a behind-the-scenes tour of America's space program. It will take the reader through the recent activity of the NASA agency following the retirement of the National Space Transportation System known as the Space Shuttle, development of the Orion Program replacing the shuttle and NASA's new game changing Commercial Crew Development Program (CCDev), dispelling myths perpetuated in the media that NASA is dead because of the shuttle retirement while teaching the history and science basics relevant to the full page artwork. This book will feature artistic images of rarely seen areas inside of NASA, launches, Orion/SLS, the shuttle's replacement, various Commercial Crew Development Program (CCDev) vehicles (SpaceX Falcon 9, Boeing CST-100, etc), and ongoing unmanned science experiments like the SUV sized Mars Rover Curiosity and lunar drilling rover RESOLVE.
The introduction will take the reader through a politically-neutral timeline of events surrounding the shuttle's retirement as well as the cancellation of the Constellation Program which was scheduled to replace the shuttle along with Constellation's Replacement, the Orion/SLS system which is currently well into development, as are many of the Commercial Crew companies' vehicles.
After the introduction chapter we get into what this book really is: beautiful photographic art of rarely seen places and things! The book is slated to be produced as a softbound coffee-table style art book with accompanying narrative, approx. 100-120 pages.
The photos will cover the current unmanned science missions & experimental equipment, developmental tests & more! Images will be accompanied by educational text regarding the science, history, and usage of the subject matter contained in the image. The gorgeous imagery and easy to understand text make this a perfect gift for kids of all ages, art lovers and space enthusiasts alike.
Though acronyms will be explained as they are used, the rear of the book will include a acronyms commonly used in the space program which the reader can use as a reference at any time.
The technical editor on this project is Edward von Koenigseck, who has 41 years experience in technical publications including work on a technical manual of NASA's Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) which saved the Apollo 13 crew.
Below are low resolution samples from the book. These are rough, not formatted for the book yet by the publisher or gone over by the editor. These are posted only to give you an idea of the writing tone.
This book is being published by a real book publisher, NOT a vanity/self-publisher and a very high quality printer has been chosen. THIS BOOK IS MADE IN AMERICA EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. The goal is to have the book in hand by fall to winter next year.
This Kickstarter project is to help defer my out-of-pocket traveling expenses (gas, lodging, etc) associated with the numerous trips needed to photograph the on-going activities at NASA. There are quite a few per month just here at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Depending on funding we will either stick to Florida or visit the various NASA facilities throughout the country. Because of the nature of the expense, any amount will help, and the minimum has been set accordingly. Money raised past this can help with construction of specialty sound activated camera remotes so that cameras may be left out on the launch pad as well as other photography related materials to enhance the book. ALL MONEY RAISED IS GOING TO BE USED ON THIS BOOK! The more we raise together, the greater the end product will be. Don't be shy, the rewards only get better and better. With donations of any amount accepted, any help is much appreciated including spreading the word and passing on the link on Facebook, etc.
The Rewards Keep Getting Better
When we reach $1000, all books sent out will have a "First Run First Edition" label on the inside of the cover signed over the label for authenticity. When we reach $2500, all backers at the $75 and $100 reward levels will have their books signed. Backers at $150 or more get an extra 8x10 of their choice. When we reach $4000, all $50 backers will receive a copy of the book and all backers at the $75 and $100 reward levels will have their names entered in the opening acknowledgements and the $50 backers will have their books signed. Backers over $150 will an additional 11x14 poster on top of the extra 8x10 from the $2500 goal.

The book will be made additionally available through download of the widely popular eBook format for Kindle, Google Android, and Apple formats using appropriate digital rights management, as well as any other economically viable delivery methods. On all electronic formats, links should be clickable to give the reader instant access to acronyms, definitions and links.
"After the Shuttle" may, space allowing, also include a rear appendix of various NASA, science and launch schedule links readers can find and participate in future launches, as well as official NASA education and pic-of-the-day sites, science, news sites, instructions on how to sign up for NASA science updates from each individual center and a list of useful Facebook and Twitter accounts to follow to keep the reader up-to-date on our space program. All links will be clickable in all eBook formats.
Intellectual property and copyright issues are no concern, as the author, Chris Haber, is the self-employed photographer of all images and holds all pertinent copyrights. Any images with readily identifiable people have signed, unlimited image releases which are on file.
Numerous space shops online and locally have expressed great interest in carrying the book as soon as it comes out, and talks are already underway with an upcoming traveling space camp, run by 17 year veteran astronaut trainer, to include this book in in the student package.
The combination of unique art and education as well as the paper and downloadable formats, will set this historically important work into a uniquely wide potential customer base, ranging from school libraries and space memorabilia collectors, to those wanting to learn about NASA from scratch, those only interested in beautiful images for their coffee tables and even children. Depending on production budget availability, foreign language editions may even be produced.
Samples of some of the images which will be used in the book can be viewed online at www.ChrisHaber.com in the top portion of the SPACE gallery. For obvious reasons the bulk of the images used in the book will not be released publicly in the NASA gallery of www.ChrisHaber.com until roughly 3-9 months after the book is released. $5 & up contributors will receive a private link to a gallery containing all the images used in both the book and the web site for choosing their reward. Special requests for rewards may be considered upon request.
Existing relationships between the book publisher and several news organizations such as Florida Today and USA Today will likely ensure review and widespread publicity. Similarly, the existing working relationship betweenChris Haber and Brevard Party Scene Magazine, which he photographs all their centerfolds, will insure a review as well as advertising space.
The book will be marketed to school libraries & book stores, major retailers (both brick & mortar and online), space memorabilia shops (both brick & mortar and online), smaller locally owned and operated retailers, museum gift shops, US military bases around the world, book of the month clubs, news stands, wholesale outlets and more. We also believe the community of aircraft/airplane, pilots and flight aficionados and collectors are a viable market outlet. If a budget were to exist for a publicist, additional publicity opportunities would open exponentially. There are also countless opportunities within space specific web sites, blogs and reviews.
