Join us in sending the world’s top female big wave surfers out to chase huge swells in this season’s Godzilla El Nino!
Super Sessions is the first and only project of its kind: a multi-media project that gives the world's most talented female big wave surfers the resources to record their most epic moments. In 2016, they will chase huge swells across the globe and share their experiences through first person video recounts on a weekly basis throughout the session. Last year’s historic event was a huge success, culminating on December 20th, the biggest day at Maverick's in five years.
HOW IT STARTED
In September 2014 Super Sessions founder Nico Sell invited thirteen of the world’s top female big-wave surfers to participate in an unusual project. They received a mysterious box with a camera and an iPad containing a video message from headquarters. Nico, appearing as “Agent N,” recruited their support for a new kind of surf challenge. They were asked to create a series of short videos documenting their personal experiences as they prepared for and rode the biggest swells around the globe. They participated in a series of virtual roundtables, where all things big-wave were discussed. They got to know one another through the video uploads and group discussions, and shared information on their mutual quest to ride huge surf. From icy Ireland, to France, California, South America and tropical Maui, these elite women embraced the unusual challenges, and created something incredible.
At the conclusion of the project, Super Sessions flew the participants to Northern California for a final week of covert surf missions and a spectacular awards celebration. Fifty-five thousand dollars was awarded to the Super Sessions Surfers, with each surfer receiving a portion of the purse. Five top prizes were handed out for the most outstanding Super Sessions contributions. Three Hawaiians - Keala Kennely, Paige Alms and Andrea Moller - joined Californians Bianca Valenti and Sarah Gerhardt on the podium, and all of the participants were honored for their achievements in and out of the water.
Women’s big-wave surfing had progressed and the world was inspired.
SUPER SESSIONS II
Super Sessions will follow the success of its inaugural season with a new project model. Super Sessions II will continue to provide a platform for women’s big wave surfing, with a new series of video assignments. This season a group of "Super Agents," made up of established Super Sessions veterans, will be featured in the project along with some surprise participants. While the early focus will be on our Super Agents, SS II will also create a place for "Rookie Applicants," offering the opportunity for unknown or aspiring big wave surfers to join the project.
Super Sessions II is launching on January 1, 2016. Our surfers, in small tight-knit groups, will embark on missions riding and capturing big waves on camera, and producing short videos for fans following online. The challenges will unfold with a number of secret twists, creating a unique and exciting dynamic for the project.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
Bringing together female surfers on a global scale is no simple task. By donating to Super Sessions you will be able to directly support world class female surfers as they chase the biggest waves on the planet - in return they will be capturing these historic moments first hand and sharing them directly back to you, the fans. With Super Sessions we are creating an experience that directly connects athletes with their fans, and we need your help to make this connection.
THE DIFFERENCE YOUR SUPPORT WILL MAKE
With $150,000 we will be able to make another year of Super Sessions a reality, but it will go to funding so much more. With every extra dollar we raise, we are able to provide funding directly to the surfers and to the pursuit of their passions. Money donated to Super Sessions will never go to a corporation, sponsor, or foundation, instead it will go to these insanely talented women and supporting what they do: chasing the biggest swells in the world and bringing their experiences back through videos shared directly with their fans. The more money we raise, the more surf missions we can send these world class athletes out on. Last year, in addition to facilitating this amazing project for the surfers we were able to give out $55,000 to further their pursuits - with your help we can again make this a reality.

Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge of a surf production like this is the unpredictability of Mother Nature. You never know when the ocean is going to come alive or go flat or get big but stormy or windy or just plain messy. But that's also part of the fun and challenge of chasing big waves. We dealt with it last year, particularly in the crazy, stormy, rainy, wild Super Sessions final week in NorCal... and we still scored beautiful huge waves at a secret spot one day, a session out a Mavericks almost entirely to ourselves on another and then to cap it all off we were out at Mavericks on the biggest day in five years on December 20th. This 2016 season is already getting dubbed the "Godzilla El Nino", a weather pattern that often brings huge and frequent swells, so we are preparing for everything.
The biggest risk these surfers are taking is the ultimate risk: major physical harm or even death in the face of the biggest waves in the world. They all know this and take the risks very seriously. But the joy they get from taking on these waves, with some of their closest friends, outweighs all of that.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
