THE RECORD & SONGS – "Baby, We All Know"
This is what I consider to be my best yet collection of original tunes. In the writing of these tunes I stepped out of myself and into many different characters, based on real life and my imagination, and pulled sounds and stories from my musical fantasyland. "Baby, we all know" their secrets and ongoings, in a world of mischief and troubled fun.
Earlier this year I moved from New York City to Nashville, but these songs could be from anywhere, usa. They were written and recorded straddling both cities and music scenes, and I couldn't be happier having been allowed to collaborate with some of my favorite musicians to bring this music to life. Below is an album sampler to give you a taste.
The recording cast includes: Robin Macmillan (engineering and playing drums on the new york sessions), Jake Silver (upright & electric bass), Roy Williams (piano), Stefan Zeniuk (bari & tenor sax), Dan Knobler (co-producing, mixing the album, and recording & engineering the Nashville sessions), Eric Frey (bass), Dominic Billet (drums), Kai Welch (organs and keyboards), John Pahmer (piano), Aaron Shaffer-Haiss (percussion), Oliver Craven (fiddle, backup vox), Maya De Vitry (backup vox), Caitlin Canty (backup vox)
And I couldn't have done it without Thomas Bryan Eaton, my other co-producer who has stood by my side and encouraged me through this entire process of developing these songs, tours with the band, and has lent his voice and crazy talented guitar and pedal steel chops to all of these recordings.
Now comes the fun part (not). Unfortunately for artists, the decreasing returns on streaming, placements, and album sales (not to mention performers haven't gotten a raise since 1973) means it's harder than ever to keep the band on the road and pay bills at the same time.
This is where you come in. By preordering the album + getting incentives you will help me fund the manufacturing and promotion of this album, to give it the exposure it deserves. Better promotion = better gigs = more fans = one more step to a sustainable music career = me being able to continue to play music for you!
As you can see below, the economics of this album are somewhat staggering (and over 2x the amount of money I am asking for). But, alas, I am too scared to ask for more than $15K, because that already seems like A LOT. And the way Kickstarter works, it's an ALL OR NOTHING model, meaning if I don't meet my goal, I don't get anything at all. (and those who contributed will be refunded)
1) Recording & Mixing - this is $ spent on renting a studio, hiring musicians to play, and paying the producer and mixing engineer
2) Publicity Campaign - this is how much is costs to get a mid-level publicist to get your album into the hands of the media, people who will write about your album and spread the word
3) Cd & Vinyl Manufacturing - it's a significant expense, especially to print those shiny new vinyl records!
4) Radio Promotion - this is how much it costs to hire a specialized radio publicist, plus the mailing cost to send the album to radio stations
5) Kickstarter Fees - kickstarter takes 5% off the top of whatever the artist makes, and there are also 3-5% processing fees, plus the actual cost of mailing goods to patrons
6) Album Artwork & Photograpy - it's gonna look pretty!
7) Album Mastering - this is the last step in the recording process to make sure all the music levels are ok and ready for optimal listening & radio

Risks and challenges
One of the biggest challenges I face as an artist is the recurring question of "why am I doing this?" Or more specifically "am I insane"? And the answer is maybe yes. I mean, who in their right mind would hop in a van with a band of hooligans, travel for over ten years playing music for whoever will listen, and ditch most domestic comforts and hope of stable relationships for the sake of a few songs?
It's for people like you and those moments when I feel I have made a genuine connection with another human being and perhaps spread a little light and love into a world that needs it.
It's never been easy for me to ask for help. That's why I lead the band, write songs, drive the van, tour manage, and do just about everything! All of my other albums have been self-funded with low budgets and unpromoted, or made with the help of a record label. This time I’m doing it completely on my own, putting forth my most ambitious project yet. I’ve already invested over $10K for the recording of this album, but I’ve got my fingers crossed I can come up with the funds to give it a proper introduction to the world.
I will do my best to deliver rewards in a timely fashion - there is still a lot to be done and a release date to be set. Thank you for your support and I hope you love the music!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
