WE MADE IT!!! Let's keep this party train rolling and make the most of the 37 hours remaining! WOOOO!
We're too busy getting things going in the bakery to do any fancy schmancy, organized, official stretch goals. So here's our unofficial stretch goal: Let's take this thing as far as we can in the next day and a half, and be SO happy we made it! Every extra dollar helps, and every extra backer means more fancy schmancy goodness being sent out! We ALL win!!
And now, that happy dance video you were all promised:
I know you're busy, so here's the cliff notes: I've single-handedly bootstrapped a new bakery specializing in treats made with craft beer. I have a huge opportunity on the table, but can't expand without the resources (read: moolah) to do so. And I would HATE to pass up this HUGE opportunity! So, I'm asking for a little help from my friends. And their friends. And some friendly strangers! Contribute if you can, and share, share, share! Okay, now onto all the details and fun facts...
Hey, don't I know you?
Hi Kickstarter! Remember me? You helped me launch a business off of just $3200 about two years ago.
Back then, I was playing around the idea of doing some baking with beer. People were very, very enthusiastic about the idea!
Since Kickstarter 2011:
Fast forward to about 8 months later, and I officially launched a line of three products made with local beer, sold in one tasting room. Four months after that, those products were on local grocery store shelves.
In the last year, I have:
• gone through a packaging redesign,
• moved to larger kitchens twice (production facilities only, no storefront yet!),
• quit my day job,
• expanded to 35 accounts from San Diego through Seattle,
• partnered with a total of 9 breweries,
• hired a rock star of an employee (just for the holidays, until now…!)
• and I now offer a product line of 12 different Beer-Kissed treats, plus two flavors of more traditional “Cookies for CASA”.
Oh, and I’m providing desserts to local restaurants and cakes to lovely couples tying the knot. And I'm doing this all myself. No wonder I’m so tired! I've worked long and hard for what I've accomplished, and I don't plan on stopping now!
What the Kickstarter is all about:
It may have been a crazy year, but the fun is just beginning. In December 2013, I launched my line of beer-kissed caramel sauces. And I recently got a commitment from an entire region of Whole Foods to carry those beer-kissed caramel sauces (three flavors: Raspberry Lambic, Scotch Porter, and Honey Basil Ale). For most food producers, this is the dream! Expansion like this can open SO many more doors down the line. It’s my first real step into the big time!
(Can’t you just see the stardust shooting out of my eyes right now??)
Such huge expansion can also, however, be dangerous if not approached right. Growing pains are pretty serious for small businesses, but I’m determined to ROCK THIS!
What it means to ROCK THIS:
Rocking this means doing it right, with enough funding and a kickass team. To do so, I’m gonna need a little help. Fortunately, I have an entire community of business owners surrounding me and helping me prepare for all the madness that’s coming my way. But it’s going to take a bit more than that; there are all sorts of financial costs to expand this quickly. Hopefully, that’s where YOU come in!
You see, as of right now, Boujie Baking Co. is a one-woman show. I have put my everything into getting things to where they are now. But I can barely keep my head on straight with my current workload (it’s like having 16 full-time jobs!). My biggest need is extra staff, and I’m projecting that once things are rolling, the orders will pay for the help. Creating jobs, doing what I love, and sharing fancy schmancy goodness with the world? Sounds like a win-win to me!
Why you should support Boujie Baking Co.:
• The craft beer movement is exploding, and I want to be right along with it. By making a beer-y food product, I'm innovating in both industries, and bridging the gap between two already amazing things.
• I've already been in business for 18 months. I've learned a lot, and know what sort of work is ahead of me. I'm ready!
• A commitment from Whole Foods is like a big stamp of approval. Even if you haven't tried my goodies, you know they're good! And with simple ingredients, no preservatives, and small batches, well, you can't go wrong.
• I'm a small business owner and passionate baker following my dreams. That means when you support this, you get the warm and fuzzies. Win-win!
• I'm currently a one-woman show, and I'm ready to create some jobs and turn this thing into a well-oiled machine! Economy BOOST!
• Boujie Baking Co. products make people smile. And we need more smiles in the world.
• I'm making sweet treats with beer. BEER! And DESSERT! Need I say more?
If you’ve tried it, I know you’re a believer. And if you haven’t, well, have a look at all those incredible perks to the right! Now's the time.
So why am I asking for this amount? What will these funds be used on?
Where funds go:
Costs of running a Kickstarter:
9% to Kickstarter and fund processing fees = $2250
Shipping for all the rewards = approx. $3000
Cost to produce all rewards = approx. $6000
Costs of project goals:
Additional equipment and insurance needed to scale up = $2000
First order packaging costs = $1200
First order ingredients costs = $1250
First order production costs = $1100
Initial marketing and demos required = $2000
Audits, fees, and other set-up costs = $1500
Other production/materials costs before first order is paid for = $3000
Leftover money to hire much-needed extra staff = $1700 (YIKES!)
It'll be cutting it pretty close if I hit my goal, but I'm awfully good at bootstrapping at this point! And I am determined to make this happen. Fancy Schmancy Goodness for EVERYONE!
I'd also like to note that besides two loans to buy my kitchen equipment and some packaging, I've not had any cash infusion into the business after my first Kickstarter, which raised around $3000. That means that I own it 100%, and that I've built it from the ground up, with every cent I have, and my entire heart and soul. In addition to Kickstarter, I'll still be finding financing elsewhere, as well. But I'd like to keep the loans to a minimum, and while finding the perfect working business parter who can buy in is an option, Kickstarter allows me to stay flexible as a small business owner, and make the right decisions for the right reasons!
How to help:
Lucky for you (and me!), there are a couple ways to help. First, no matter what else you do or don't do, I'm asking everyone to SHARE. If we can get this product out in the world, who knows how far it could go! Share the link on Facebook, Twitter, othersocialmediathingy-dot-com, or send it in a bottle! (Okay maybe not that last one. Let's keep our oceans clean.) C'mon, the video alone is lolololololz-worthy, no? Share the laughs :)
Second, I'll love you forever and ever if you feel like chipping in! Even a dollar helps, and I've made sure there are some killer rewards (look to the right!) to make sure you get something extra special in return. It takes a village, right??
And special thanks to Ben Blom for his awesome guitar skills. That song wouldn't exist without him!
Risks and challenges
A huge challenge I faced during my last Kickstarter was getting all the rewards out on time. I've put a lot of thought into the produce-ability of these rewards, and hope to be MUCH more timely with them! I can only imagine the work that lies ahead of me, though, so getting the rewards out on the dates promised may be a challenge. I will make every effort to get the rewards out on time!
The entire task at hand is going to be quite challenging. Scaling up is never simple, but I know that I have SO many good people in my corner. Humboldt County truly is an incredible place to start a business. This expansion is going to take hundreds of man hours, on the phone, in the bakery, in the office, and in stores. It will take a stellar, well-executed marketing plan, an understanding of the specialty food industry, and an efficient workflow. It will take juggling, countless stressful days, dedication, perseverance, integrity, and passion. I've made it this far on just $3000, and have learned so, so much along the way. I KNOW I can keep pushing ahead, especially with all of the support I have. Thank YOU for reading!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
