Hi i’m Antonia Attwood a visual artist who works in still and moving image.
Over the last year I have been developing an innovative in-depth Arts and Mental Health project called “Manifestations of the Mind” with an amazing set of people including other photographic artist collaborators, Mental Health Professionals and those with ‘Lived Experience’ of Mental Illness. We want to focus on and explore ways of communicating how mental health conditions actually feel to those who experience them.
For the project I will be undertaking an artist’s residency Freespace Gallery in Kentish Town, London, which will entail ongoing Moving Image and Sound Workshops with participants with ‘Lived Experience’ of mental health conditions.
These initial films will be exhibited within a small Art installation at the Freespace Gallery in January next year.
There will follow a 10 month period of working far more in depth with fewer participants to create 3 or 4 far more ambitious pieces using moving Image and Sound. Alongside this a installation will be devised for them to be projected onto. This will create an immersive sensory experience for the audience at The Bethlem Gallery housed at Bethlem Royal Hospital site in October 2017.
These ground-breaking pieces in the Arts and Mental Health field will work as Artworks in their own right. They will however on another level also actually act as a kind of simulation in which the viewer can experience a visual and audio interpretation of that person’s altered mind-state due to their psychological condition. It is inevitably hard to describe in words how you really feel to others. The work will not be literal but obviously have a sense of ambiguity.
This will help raise awareness of many people’s day-to-day experience when they are unwell. People’ experience of the same diagnosed condition are obviously as different and unique as the people themselves. These works will be snapshots of the different ways certain conditions are experienced.
For mental health professionals this approach has already attracted a lot of interest in that it can be used as a teaching resource. The finished moving image and sound will then be translated into an innovative virtual immersion web-based experience. This will be developed into a learning and research tool.
So in short what you will be contributing to for the Manifestations of the Mind project will be :
1. Creative workshops
2. A number of Moving Image pieces
3. The curation of 2 immersive Arts Installations exhibitions, which also work as simulations.
4. A Web-site resource, scientific research and teaching tool.
And a chance for me to build on and push my practice onto another level.
I am asking you to please give a donation in order to make this project possible, however small or large will be extremely appreciated.
I will be donating the following gifts to anyone kind enough to offer financial backing. I will be sending out gifts of gratitude to the people who have donated to the project, these are listed below.

Risks and challenges
This project has been confirmed by all parties and venues involved. The only problem facing the exhibitions going ahead is financial backing. Please help me get this project off its feet! I am looking to raise as much money as possible. The more money I get the longer I will be able to work with the patients involved. Antonia xLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
