(20th Nov. update) The publication has been successfully funded! We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has backed and helped publicize the project.
As far as stretch goals are concerned, while there aren’t any particular brackets or targets set in stone, we will be putting all funds raised beyond our initial financial target to increasing the publications page count. The further we go over the chunkier the book will become!
What is Visionaries?
"It is a time when magic is more powerful than science, and only those who control the magic, control destiny. They are the Visionaries."
Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light was a toy line produced by Hasbro in 1987. The figures, vehicles and accessories prominently featured holographic or foil stickers to represent the characters ability to invoke magical powers or adopt animal forms.
As was typical with many children’s properties of its time the toylines launch was accompanied by a comic and cartoon series of the same name, produced by Star Comics (an imprint of Marvel Comics) and Sunbow Productions respectively. Both of which were ultimately cancelled with the discontinuation of the toy line as a result of rising production costs.
What will the guide cover?
This Kickstarter projects aim is to produce a printed collector’s guide, a reference book for the toy line depicting the figures, vehicles and accessories that saw release, their incorporated play/action features and card back character information (5th Nov. update) as well as include details and images of the unreleased 1988 line thanks to community contributions.
The publication will be a 56-page (subject to change) 195 x 135 mm full-colour paperback perfect bound book, printed on uncoated recycled stock and featuring a two colour blinding flourescent front and back cover!
We have already received permission of use from Hasbro to produce the publication based upon the license and Bob Hall, whose previous work you may be familiar with from both Marvel and D.C comics as well as Valiant/Acclaim has been commissioned to produce some snazzy cover art.
Backer rewards range from PDF versions of the publication, to the physical book, risographic prints of the cover art and postcards featuring exclusive artwork; all rewards will be posted free of charge and worldwide regardless of whether you are in America or Australia!
If you have any questions in regards to a certain reward on the track, please don’t hesitate to ask us directly.
What experience do you have producing publications?
In regards to the nuts'n'bolts of the publication itself, both myself and Gemma come from educational and industry backgrounds in graphic and editorial design. Suffice to say, there is nothing we enjoy doing more than fondling paper stock or debating binding options and are quietly confident that we will be able to produce a product that is not only intuitive but worth putting on your shelf!
One hundred percent of all funds raised will go towards the physical production and delivery of the publication: the material, printing and postage costs. None of the funds will be used to feed coffee addictions or fix a slightly leaky conservatory roof.
You mentioned it was free?
Yes! If funded, the printed publication will eventually be made available worldwide for free (with the exception of a post and packaging charge, which will depend on your geographical location) and to anyone, not only those Kickstarter users who took part in supporting the initial project. This is in part out of the kindness of our hearts but also a result of our permission of use agreement with Hasbro.
So why back the project?
Project supporters will be receiving the publication considerably earlier than non-backers, you will be guaranteed a copy, avoid a postage charge and there are options for additional exclusive goodies! Not only that, but you will be helping to support the project directly, enabling the publication to go into production in the first place!
We hope this will be the first of many vintage toy line guides we are able to produce through crowd funding, from Bravestarr and M.A.S.K to Action Force and Mighty Max!
Risks and challenges
The publication is required as per the terms of the permission of use to be cleared by Hasbro before going into final production; while we do not foresee this proving a problem due to the nature of the content, backers should be aware that it may potentially delay the delivery of the final product to the doorstep.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
