About this project

For the first time in New Jersey, a landmark museum-curated exhibition will take place outside museum gallery walls.

For two months from August 19 - October 14, 2012 New Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art will present "HEADS" featuring more than 50 large-scale paintings by Romanian artist, Dumitru Gorzo.

Installed on exterior private and public walls at numerous locations throughout picturesque Red Bank, New Jersey, the public art exhibition will be free, open 24 hours a day, and accessible to everyone!

The series of 4’ x 8’ paintings commissioned exclusively for this exhibition focuses on expressive, allegorical, strange, satirical, and futuristic heads. The exhibition is curated by Dr. Marek Bartelik, art critic, independent curator, and president of the International Association of Art Critics.

This is Dumitru Gorzo’s first museum exhibition in the United States. The artist’s voice embodies stylistically diverse paintings that explore portraiture with a nuanced observation of the individual spirit. The paintings unite to create a vibrant tableau intended to draw in the viewer and stimulate conversation with imagery that alternates between fantasy and reality — some heads inspired by classical antiquity, some by the bright colors and strong brushstrokes inherent in Expressionism, some reflections of childhood memories in Romania, some eliciting angst, some adventurous — all of them evocative through the artist’s subjective interpretation for emotional effect.

About the artist

Dumitru Gorzo (b. 1975) is an emerging artist from the village of Ieud, Romania. He received an advanced visual arts degree from the National University of Fine Arts in Bucharest. Gorzo’s methods of working have ranged from street prankster, to performance artist, to studio painter and sculptor—effectively evading any strict categorization. In 2006 he was the subject of a major, solo exhibition at the Romanian National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest, which devoted an entire floor to his works. The exhibition then traveled to the Brukenthal Art Museum, Sibiu, Romania. Since 1999 he has shown extensively in Romania where his work has garnered extensive press coverage and a growing audience.

About the curator

Dr. Marek Bartelik is the president of the International Association of Art Critics, an association of critics with 4600 members in 61 national sections worldwide. He studied art at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris after moving from Poland to France in 1981. He holds a Master of Science degree from Columbia University and a Ph.D in art history from the Graduate Center of the City University in New York. Dr. Bartelik has taught modern and contemporary art at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, Yale University, and MIT. Between 2006-2011, he was a Graduate critic-in-residence at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MA. He has been reviewing shows for Artforum International for the last 20 years, and has written articles for numerous publications both in the U.S. and abroad. He lectures nationally and internationally, including at MoMA in New York; the Boston Museum of Art in Boston; the Polish Academy of Science in Warsaw; the Municipal Museum in the Hague; the Mondrian House in Amersfoort, Holland; the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and the Pinacoteca in São Paulo, Brazil. His new book -- "Gentle Rain: Journal of an Art Critic" -- is scheduled to be published in 2013.

Why should I help fund this project?

  • You love art.
  • You love New Jersey.
  • You love arts in education.
  • You love making a difference for society.
  • You love being a visionary.
  • All of the above.

Why else fund the project?

  • “HEADS” will effectively transform the historic town of Red Bank into an open museum portrait gallery. Through this personal interaction with significant international art of our time, New Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art will bring a unique and thought-provoking cultural experience directly into the lives of residents, schoolchildren, businesses, train commuters, and visitors.
  • NJMoCA is committed to providing free educational programs integrated with its equally free exhibitions. A full K-12 inquiry-based curriculum with suggested studios lessons will accompany “HEADS.” Developed to serve New Jersey's approx. 1.5 million students from elementary through high school, teachers from across the state can simply download the materials from and arrange an art field trip at their convenience. This unparalleled museum program will (1) Introduce students to the richness of contemporary art in an exciting and fun non-traditional setting (2) Inspire students to personally connect, discuss, and interpret art through an out-of-classroom discovery of an international emerging artist (3) Encourage critical thinking by connecting skills being learned in school and the visual arts (4) Spark imagination and a love of art.
  • A companion QR code on signage at each location will provide an audio guide with information about the artist and works being viewed to engage the public and make visiting the exhibition even more meaningful
  • A photo gallery on NJMoCA’s Facebook page will invite viewers to put their personal spin on the paintings -- their own titles, inventive backstories, impressions ... and start a dialogue about the artist, his paintings, contemporary art, art in the context of our times, art as a philosophy of life ...
  • “HEADS” will require people to walk throughout downtown Red Bank. The increased visitors will generate commerce for hotels, restaurants, retail, and other local businesses.
  • The exhibition is a unique cultural opportunity to help build an extraordinary new vision for the art world and New Jersey.

Where will my money go?

Your Kickstarter donation will help close the last funding needed to create:

  • A unique free education program which will allow teachers and students throughout New Jersey to plan a compelling art field trip to discover the value of contemporary art in today’s society. Incorporating the arts in education bolsters academic achievement, social and emotional development, civic engagement, and equitable opportunity. The arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skill. And arts learning can improve motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork.
  • A smart phone QR audio tour and signage to enhance the viewer experience. The QR codes at every location will link to an audio guide with insight and information about each painting being viewed.

Any funding above our goal will be used to publish a museum exhibition catalogue with beautiful color images to enjoy long after the exhibition ends, and to offset professional installation costs so that no damage is done to the donated public and private exterior walls.

Is my donation tax deductible?

New Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art

As you know, it isn't every day that a new museum is born. New Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art (NJMoCA) is a young, upstart museum focused on radically redefining the art world and New Jersey.

New Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art is the first museum dedicated to contemporary art and culture in New Jersey. Our mission is to identify and present emerging artists who are producing significant and challenging new perspectives in artistic expression

However, great contemporary art is just the beginning ...

Currently a presenting museum without walls as we search for a permanent location, NJMoCA is committed to benefitting all of New Jersey through a new game-changing business model

Unlike most museums, NJMoCA provides world-class exhibitions and education programs free to the public

Grounded in curatorial scholarship, unconventional, and fiscally responsible, our platform challenges the traditional museum definition that confines it to a single structure at a single location.

Instead, our non-collecting museum will present site-specific art exhibitions, events, and performances in a range of spaces across the entire state of New Jersey – from town centers, billboards and empty storefronts, to abandoned warehouses and corporate structures – a public space format that will continue in tandem with a future permanent building.

This forward-thinking and adventurous sensibility of using the entire state as museum space will enable NJMoCA to serve as a linchpin in community building, education enhancement, and economic development throughout New Jersey; serve as a new cultural model for the art world; have wide-reaching social impact; and advance New Jersey as a vibrant international tourist destination.

It’s a courageous and bold vision ...

So why on Kickstarter?

At this time, we don’t have any wealthy benefactors. New Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art is the little engine that could, run by a group of grassroots volunteers who are passionate about both the arts and New Jersey, dedicated to fostering the careers of emerging artists, and to leveraging world-class contemporary art to enhance the quality of life to a wide audience. Through the support of individual donors like you, NJMoCA will continue to push boundaries and present the highest caliber of contemporary art outside the the usual comfort zone and make a difference in people's lives.

Please spread the word and share the Kickstarter link to let people know you're part of the project!

Thanks so much for supporting “HEADS” !!
