THE LINC MOBILE SENSOR NETWORK

LINC is an exciting new platform for multi-sensor measurements using mobile devices.  With LINC it's simple and easy to create wireless and wired sensor networks. It’s totally flexible!  Up to 12 LINC Smart Sensors can be networked to your mobile device with no electronics knowledge required. Load the app., turn on the LINC device and start the discovery.

Use the LINC View mobile app to see the output of your sensor network in real-time then send the data to your friends and colleagues over the cloud!  Measure, Test and Monitor almost anything with LINC.

The open platform LINC communication protocol means developers can use LINC hardware to extend their Apps beyond the limits of a regular mobile device, and open up a new world of possibilities.  The power of LINC is in its ease of use, flexibility and open platform.

HARDWARE - Modular and Expandable

Every LINC sensor network starts with a LINC Bridge, the Bridge connects a Smart Sensor to your mobile device via Bluetooth.  Add more LINC Smart Sensors and Bridges to expand your network and add functionality.

LINC Bridge

A LINC Bridge is a self-contained unit with battery, wireless radios, and microprocessor.  Each Bridge can be used by itself or as part of a larger sensor network that consists of multiple Bridges.  A Bridge can accept up to four LINC Smart Sensors and one 0-5V analog input sensor for those who want to connect their own sensor types to the LINC system. The LINC bridge can be powered and charged with a standard micro-USB cable.

LINC Smart Sensors

Adding a sensor is easy, just take a LINC Smart Sensor and connect it to the Bridge.  LINC automatically knows what type of sensor has been added to the network and the user will instantly be available to view and record the data with the LINC Sensor View application. Initially, there will be five types of LINC Smart Sensors, Temperature, Linear Position, Force/Load, Wind Speed, and Pressure.  More flavors of Smart Sensors will be created once the initial phase of development is completed.

Data can be stored locally, shared, or compiled for long-term analysis. LINC Sensor View allows you to seamlessly collaborate and present your data to others.  Share collected data through email, text message or upload it to a file located on the cloud.  Our web based data view will allow LINC users to view their data on a computer.

OPEN PLATFORM

LINC was designed to solve immediate measurement needs, but also to provide the hardware tools for developers to create bold new apps.  LINC is an open sensor platform that developers can integrate with their own apps.  Each LINC Smart Sensor has a built-in calibration and identifier.  This information, as well as the data stream format and protocol, will be available to app developers and LINC users.  The LINC community will bring together app developers and hardware integrators to help each other create new and exciting products.  We are creating a community to take LINC modules anywhere you can dream. LINC is the launching pad for integrating hardware with your mobile app!

Connect four or more LINC IR Temperature sensors to your Android device to monitor real-time tire temperatures around the track.  Combine with GPS data to measure tire temperatures versus speed, cornering acceleration, track position and suspension setup.

LINC was born racing at the highest levels and can handle tough environments. What’s been done:

1.  LINC Bridge working prototype is designed and built with Bluetooth, Smart Sensor interface, and wireless Smart Sensor interface.

2.  Smart Sensor working prototypes are designed and built:  temperature, non-contact temperature, pressure, force, and position sensors.

3.  Existing Android app. was modified to work with LINC .

4.  Embedded code for Smart Sensors is written.

5.  Embedded code for LINC Bridge is written.

6.  System has been tested with all types of smart sensors.

7.  Parts have been specified.

8.  Enclosures have been designed.

What’s next?

With your support we will:

1.  Complete the new circuit board with all of these components into a single package. (Jan 2013)

2.  Populate and assemble the custom circuit boards using a local, long-time, trusted vendor. (Feb 2013)

3.  Manufacture the LINC Bridge and Smart Sensor units. (March 2013)

4.  Develop the LINC Sensor View app for Android (iOS app. possible with future interest). (March 2013)

5.  Assemble and ship our LINC products. (April 2013)

At each step we will verify and test components and functionality. This allows us to react to any issues that may arise quickly and effectively.  Every custom sensor system that we have designed in the past 10 years follows this same process and we have become very experienced at making it happen.  It’s what we do!


FAQ

How is LINC different from other mobile sensor products?

Link is more than a Bluetooth sensor. It is a fast and flexible sensor network that can be created by anyone. No other system offers the level of flexibility, expandability and ease of implementation that LINC does.

What if I have multiple sensors at a location do I need a LINC Sensor Bridge for each sensor?

Up to 4 Smart Sensors can be connected to a single LINC Bridge.  In addition multiple LINC Bridges can be added to a network wirelessly with more Smart Sensors attached to each bridge.

Do I have to make my own brackets and mounting hardware?

LINC Sensor Bridge and Smart Sensors were designed with ease of mounting in mind. Your feedback will help us chose what types of mounting hardware to offer.

Can I connect my own 0-5V sensor to a LINC Sensor Bridge?

Yes! The LINC Sensor Bridge has a 0-5V input for non-LINC sensors. Eventually more analog inputs can be added via an analog expander unit we have in the works.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Although any development project can have unforeseen issues and delays. We haven taken many precautions to make sure that once our Kickstarter is successfully funded we will create and deliver LINC. The LINC node and smart sensors are already working prototypes, albeit with separate boards and hand soldered components. These proof of concept units give us a great deal of confidence that we have the skills and understanding to manufacture and build the LINC system at an affordable price. The next step is to design and assemble custom circuit boards (something we do for every product we have developed) to reduce the overall size and reduce the cost of manufacturing. We will also manufacture LINC Bridge and Smart Sensor enclosures, we already have suppliers with who we have long term relationships lined up for these components. LINC is a culmination of 30 years of combined engineering experience and over 10 years building and developing custom sensor products.
