One year ago today, our Kickstarter project was closed as successfully funded!!!!!
We set a high goal and were nervous about funding it, and thanks to the generosity of all of you and one very special backer, we exceeded our goal before the official close of the campaign. Our project --Glenn Stewart's CD "Breaking Boundaries" -- was successfully funded on September 17, 2013. Recording, mixing and mastering were completed in July 2014 and the CD was sent to production and officially released on September 9, 2014.
When we started the campaign, we decided that it was time for Nashville and country music to embrace and accept openly gay musicians, so we named our campaign "Country That Kicks Out and Loud and Proud." We created a mission statement for our record label, New Nashville North (N3): N3's mission is to successfully merge country music and the LGBT community, diminishing stereotypes, prejudice and bias, and creating a foundation of tolerance, acceptance and equality.
The first track on the CD is (Here it Comes) Around Again, written by RuPaul Charles and Lucian Piane. This was the CD's first connection to merging country music with the LGBT community. Glenn and I both believe it is the best track on the CD. Glenn took this song by superstar RuPaul and made it uniquely his own, adding that country rock sound that is the heart of any music by Glenn Stewart.
RuPaul herself has tweeted several times about Glenn's cover of the song, which is providing Glenn with an even wider fan base. This is true merging of multiple genres, and Glenn's success as a musician is having a positive impact on so many people!
Throughout the project we had a few starts and stops that kept us from our original timeline. Studio time wasn't always available when convenient for Glenn, and we chose a new producer for recording, engineering, mixing and mastering, which delayed our production time a few months. That, however, was a great decision and resulted in a fantastic collaboration between Glenn and John Albani from Sonic Eden Studios, which is evident in the high quality of the music when you listen to "Breaking Boundaries"
With production costs allocated to finish the CD, and with "Out Loud and Proud" still in mind, we decided to use a small amount of the remaining funds to film a video for the song "Little Miss John Wayne" starring a drag queen from Worcester, MA. With help from many friends and donations of time, location and talent, we managed to produced "Little Miss John Wayne" on a very limited budget. In return, we have an incredibly high quality video worth 15 times its production cost to us! Thanks to Chris Gibbs and crew and to Dark Star Tavern for working with us and making that happen!
Joslyn Fox, drag queen extraordinaire from RuPaul's Drag Race Season 6, stars as "Little Miss John Wayne", a party girl who likes to be the center of attention. The video was completed in February 2014 and released in April on YouTube during the an episode of RuPaul's Drag Race with Joslyn. As far we know, a country music video has never starred a drag queen until now, so it is a country music "first". The collaboration between Glenn and Joslyn showcases what N3 and Glenn Stewart are all about: good music and good entertainment are good no matter who is behind it. The support of the video from both the LGBT community and "mainstream" audiences has been incredibly positive and demonstrates that the time is NOW for tolerance, acceptance and equality and to break those boundaries.
The Glenn Stewart/Joslyn Fox collaboration is so successful that we are working on a second video for Around Again. We have invited dozens of queens from all season's of RuPaul's Drag Race to be in the video, and expect to announce filming date and location after the first of the year.
In March 2014, Glenn held a social media "contest" to name the CD. Thank you to backer Stacy Moquin for coming up with "Breaking Boundaries". The name of the CD is so important because it describes not only what Glenn and N3 are trying to accomplish, but is also very meaningful to Glenn in his own personal journey over that last few years.
But we haven't stopped there. Country music outlets such as Zuus Country have been following us on Twitter and several music bloggers have given the CD rave reviews. Some big names in the entertainment industry are starting to take notice of Glenn's CD, and there are potential tours, soundtracks, videos, and of course more live performances all in the works.
It's been quite a year since we asked for your help. By now, all rewards have been sent and we hope you are enjoying the CD. We love our Glenn Stewart fans and are so grateful to those of you who backed our project. We could not have done this without you. There will be opportunities in the future to back additional projects for Glenn, and we will continue to count on you to help us get Glenn's music heard everywhere!
THANKS TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU FOR BELIEVING IN GLENN STEWART.
