The course is set.
Our mothers, moms and mums truly do set the course of the world.
When I was about 11, my mother decided I was too old for an Easter basket. That morning I awoke to kind my first flying model rocket kit! Now some decades later, here I am looking to launch my own model rocket company. I think she would like this, and tell me to go for it.
She greatly encouraged my art, always making sure I had all the traditional tools, pencils, paper, ink, paint brushes. She even made my finely tailored clothes. Because of this, I had no idea we were poor. She worked when I was at school and when I was asleep at night. Because of her, all the images I have ever created exist today.
Those are some crazy designs!
Check them out at www.shrockets.com! Crazy cool is what I do. But do they fly? Yes, and I've photos of the magic! Here are the Snarky, the Firefox and the Lexxjet, all currently available from Apogee Model Rockets.
Please note, these below are all rockets I have previously designed and are sold by other companies. To see the mid level rewards go to www.shrockets.com and look at the Beta Ray Level designs.
Some of my space art for NASA
Part of my wild ride has been a near two decade long association with NASA. When I was at Maxis video games, we met with NASA several times while working on SimMars. I made a friend there, Dr. Chris McKay, for whom I have done several images and animations depicting possible missions to the Moon and Mars. Here are a few.
A quiet struggle ends in victory
I am a professional artist, animator and model rocket designer. I am also "Autistic", which is close enough in spelling to "Artistic" that I just don't worry about it. Besides, I think the rockets speak for themselves. The designs are jaw dropping, the packaging is a work of art, and the instructions are amazing clear and concise. The marketing support materials are top notch computer animation videos and printed graphic art sales info. The designs, packaging and marketing are all done by the same major league artist and designer who has worked for Sega and with NASA. The product itself is great fun to use and made from quality parts to provide economical entertainment and a "didn't even know I was learning something" education. Wow.
What's in the bag?
Quality parts in a kit make for big fun when done! Shrockets use quality basswood and balsa wood, smooth finish body tubes, secure mounting for the motor and recovery systems, and colorful, kickin' waterslide decals. The instructions are bold and graphical, with concise written direction as well.
Below is an instruction page from a current Shrocket kit, they are rendered in dimensional 3D for easier and fuller understanding of the assembly. And it's artsy!
Shrockets are better than bad, they're good!
OK, how will all this come together?
Suppliers deliver the parts we need to put the kits together, body tubes from a supplier in Ohio, balsa from a supplier in Iowa, the rest from vendors as needed. We have a warehouse/workshop in Eureka, California where Shrockets is based. Printing and such will be done locally here in Eureka as well. A store right here in Eureka on famous highway 101 has asked to carry Shrockets in their inventory, as well as several vendors across the country.
So, awhile back I mentioned something interesting...
I'm Artistic and Autistic, maybe this picture will explain.
Risks and challenges
The question is, how tough is this going to be? That depends upon whether one likes what one does or not. I like what I do most of time, but between the good and bad, model rockets are always rad!
I have been designing and selling model rockets through my website for over 10 years, Here is a link to several popular designs of mine that Rocket Reviews has posted:http://www.rocketreviews.com/shrox-designs.html
Honestly, I can't see the future, but I can see what I can do in the present. I believe I have the talent and skill to create a wonderfully fun and profitable model rocket company. My past experience in a variety of fields from graphic design to marketing to video games to 3D animation to actually designing and marketing model rockets for real, I think this demonstrates I have what it will take.
Here are a few reasons why I can believe I can succeed:
- I have experience as a vendor in model rocketry, and I have worked with or for the three largest model rocket retailers in the market, Estes, Quest and Apogee as a model rocket designer.
- I can keep costs low, as I can do the packaging, advertising and marketing myself. I am a skilled artist and 3D animator, I have worked as art director for the three largest video game companies in the industry, Sega, Electronic Arts and THQ.
- Model design. I have an eye for unique and crowd pleasing designs. I am able to say that I am a leader in innovative design and styling of model rockets.
- Instructions. The instructions for the kits feature 3D rendered images that clearly illustrate assembly step by step. They are very easy to understand and follow.
- They are just so cool! The fact that model rockets fly high in the sky is a big looking point right there!
One must be realistic in planning an endeavour such as this, questions must be asked and answered, and money must be accounted for. Please inquire, query and ask anything you wish about the project, I will answer as best I can.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
