What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

The Edge fountain pen.

In a digital world, an analog tool rises from another time, it looks different, it looks today, tomorrow.
I'm an architect and a designer who's also a fountain pen user since always. I have been behind some of the most unusual and innovative writing instruments of the last few years as part of the work of my architecture/design office. As a result I took a fondness for creating this little objects and thought on how such a traditional writing tool can transcend that tradition that could be a load and get to a form that's part of my language that for me is today and tomorrow, not possessed by any form of nostalgia. I have taken good care of the functional aspects and the engineering and manufacturing processes to the point where I could also do something that while inside some traditional parameters, can be regarded as fresh, basically because its different to the point that it has even been conceived in a way that's only possible today. That's why its here, on Kickstarter, as I think this is the place to start with something like this.

  The Fountain Pen:

The Edge is a fountain pen, it has a nib and a feed and utilizes long/short standard/european ink cartridges, this is, the most affordable and economic type that can be found on any store worldwide.

You can place a long cartridge or 2 shorts. Its also possible to place any standard ink converter (not supplied) to use bottled ink instead. The Edge has been designed in Europe, some of the components are made in France, others are made in Germany. This is a 100% European product. The pen is made of only 3 parts (plus the feed and nib) of  a sturdy polymer that is afterwards lacquered (in black in what I call “cast iron black finish”).  No other colors are at the moment available to keep the campaign simple and realistic. The stainless steel nib (the writing component) is made in Germany, its a 5mm nib system, premium quality that will give you a great witting experience. The body has been designed in order to give you total freedom (there are no lines nor jumps or bumps, its just a continuous shape) to accommodate any writing style or language. It has also been thought to provide you with a good grip as the surface is all textured. It won't slip even under heavy sweat.

Despite its angular design this fountain pen has been designed to be really comfortable in the hand as there are no sharp edges on the sides (the edges are curved to avoid pointed angles). The section for those who know a bit more about fountain pens has a similar size and design as the triangular one found on the venerable OMAS 360, it behaves similar, it really gives good comfort and grip.

The Edge has also been designed with left-handed users on mind for the first time (I can write with both hands, so I took the matter really seriously), and the pen its also great for sketching, as, its the primary use I have given to it. If hand writing is fading away by the use of tablets, phones, computers and electronic gadgets, sketching still is a pretty much analog thing. Digital tablets and digital drawing are not still that widespread, I do a lot of that too (drawing with digital tools), but the quickest way still for me to put an idea out of my head is with the aid of a pen or a pencil on paper, at least, for a draft. A lot is said usually about “writing experience” but we tend to forget that for some users (like me) the primary purpose for fountain pens is drawing, sketching, taking quick notes. Although the Edge is a variant of other designs I have made (or a combination of them), its really different on the fact that I have really put my mind into doing a pen that is under 50 dollars, made with the aid and feedback of users like YOU, which is a big, big effort for any small operation. This has been achieved by finding the right proportion on the type of nibs, materials, production processes, as every detail sums when putting together a product of this characteristics.

The Edge represent the pinnacle of my design philosophy for this type of utensils, a resume of over 3 years of hard work, form, function, materials, manufacturing processes, and more important, the feedback of countless persons around the world who have experienced pens that I have designed, who are the ones that can make my work possible, otherwise, I wouldn't be a designer, as at the end, its my job to provide you with tools, objects, things that will give you joy and serve your needs and desires.

Main features & characteristics:

Length: 158mm (6,2 inches) caped. 141Mm (5,5 inches) w/no cap.
Snap-off body and cap.
Cap do not post.

Lightweight, yet sturdy and simple construction. Nibs can be easily exchanged. Cap do not post. No clip.

The goal:

The campaign has been set at 2300 euros all or nothing which is the minimum amount that can assure you to get a good price point, less than that the production becomes very expensive This is very important to me as I don't want this object to be an exclusive article at an inflated price tag (most pens on the market are just that) as I want it to be the right price for you while being able to give one of the most striking designs for fountain pens you can get for the money, something appealing for you to try out, as I don't think that sophisticated design has to be expensive nor exclusive. My final goal is to fully establish my practice and be full time doing what I like to do. This is, designing.

Timing:

Project launch:      June 2018
Manufacturing:      July-September 2018
 Delivery:               November/December 2018

As the idea is to make it available as much as possible during the period the campaign is open, it has not been set a limit for the amount of pieces to be manufactured. I am not working with a big factory or operation behind, so the delays will have to do with the amount that will be produced rather than any other factor. Times are estimated over the production of other similar pens, but during the middle of the campaign an update will be given with a projection of the time frame, this means, if the wait will be longer or shorter (it may happen) than previously estimated.   The price is an exclusive launching price as the pen goes directly with no brand (except my name) from me to you. Otherwise, it could cost around 50% more. This reduction is possible as there are  no middle men, no distributors, no retailers, NO EXTERNAL MARKETING whatsoever involved, nothing else but the pen, therefore I am able to drop the price to what really cost to me, in a product that's a small series after all and quite tailored for a niche. My ultimate goal is to reach you and spread out my designs, not to make a quick buck.   I have thought about this reality (marketing, agencies and so on) over and over, and I think it goes totally against the spirit of the platform.

This is simply my effort, so its to me and my team to communicate and do that all the work when needed. For keeping it even simpler, there's only one reward and this is the Edge in Black (no other color) as black is to me the right choice for this product; you'll have the option for an EF or F or M steel nib. If you like it, back the project, if you like it but you cannot back it at the moment, please, tell a friend, that's the best help to me if you just come across this project and you know someone who might like it.

Risks and challenges

Risks:

Every project has risks, and regarding its nature, risks can be minimized or at least foreseen. In this case the main risk could be a series of delays if the project gets really over-founded. The pen is produced in a medium-sized workshop, and although we have a stock of nibs that are enough for the minimum founding and start right on production, beyond that number a bigger stock will be needed. The Edge is designed over the platform of another pen that's already selling and being manufactured, therefore, there's a lot of data already regarding logistics, time, suppliers and so on. This should ensure you that we're working in a field we know, what could be the main risk as said, is a delay triggered by a huge demand, a thing at this point (launch of the campaign) its difficult to know. Given the unconventional design of the pen and no marketing, probably the demand won't be very high, but if it is, manufacturing, supply chain and delivery will be affected, therefore, towards the end of the campaign an update with clear information will be given to address this and any other issue.
