About

My name is Victoria Hejlskov, I am a 22 years old art student from Denmark. I have created an anti bullying initiative that focuses on the dynamics between the bully, and the victim, and the witnesses. The project is called 'The Art of Bullying', and the goal is to create a stronger bond between the students, and a long lasting discussion. It's not just a boring adult who talks for an hour and then leaves. It focuses on getting the students involved.

I was bullied a lot throughout my school years and also later in life and it has affected me more than i previously cared to admit. When I was in school, bullying was never really discussed, it was always a taboo. I was always silent, and I always thought it was my fault, and that I deserved it.

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

I plan to visit different public schools, first in Denmark but hopefully also worldwide at one point, and create a safe space and form a discussion with the students about bullying and the different choices we always make. I believe that bullying is something that everyone can relate to and it is everyones responsibility. After talking with kids about bullying I would take them outside and stand in front of a canvas and ask them to throw paint at me. The project is about choice and consent and empowerment over humiliation. It's about creating a feeling of unity and common goals with people you might not normally talk to. And it's about having fun, and creating new memories. You usually never get to make a mess on purpose, and it creates a feeling of community. Bullying can be many things, it can be violent and loud, but it can also be silent, and the feeling of being alone. The paint splattered canvas will be donated to the different schools. It's colorful and can't be ignored.

Risks and challenges

The project is very psychologically challenging for me. I have done it three times now, and it has always been very encouraging to see the reaction of people, knowing that i have made an impact that they will remember. That being said, it always leaves me with flashbacks and pain from previous experiences. But that pain is accompanied by a feeling of pride and happiness, that these memories no longer have control over me, and it has been very therapeutic for me to do this. I couldn't imagine dealing with my past in any other way. This feeling of community has done more for me than any therapist.
