At Stranger’s Guide, we believe storytelling can be a radical act when it exposes readers to new ways of thinking. If you agree, we hope you’ll support our work.

If you want to travel to a place, where do you go to learn about it?

Through long-form travel essays, in-depth investigative stories, fiction, maps, whimsical facts and figures and beautiful photo essays, Stranger’s Guide is a travel magazine like you’ve never seen before. Replete with beautiful design and stunning photography, these are objects you’ll want to hold on to for years to come.

Encounters that take you there...

Before there were guidebooks, 18th- and 19th-century authors wrote “stranger’s guides” to cities and countries – pamphlets and books that combined helpful tips with particular and offbeat advice and context: the best boarding houses alongside bits of history, preferred brothels as well as ways to avoid pickpockets. These guides were far removed from a modern, sanitized Fodor’s—rather, they were personal, eccentric and intimate portrayals of place.

Stranger’s Guide is a modern version of that idea—a nonprofit publication designed to reveal the intricacies of places across the globe, through both local and foreign eyes.

19th Century Stranger's Guides
19th Century Stranger's Guides

Each issue of Stranger’s Guide is themed around a single destination—Russia, the Great Plains, Mexico City or Shanghai.

By choosing to concentrate on just one place, Stranger’s Guide will allow us to stop, be still and delve into each location’s complexities. Readers will save these objet d’art on their bookshelves, lend them to friends and continue to page through the issues for years to come.

We are a nonprofit publication designed to evoke place and redefine travel writing. Our mission is unique in that it aligns with both arts and cultural heritage organizations, as well as charities focused on improving social welfare. Our work brings in voices from across the globe, creating a venue for both native and foreign writers to pen long-form journalism about place. We actively engage with global networks to introduce international writers to an American audience.

Nonprofit journalism is a sustainable, impactful funding model in which DONATIONS support the organizational mission rather than investors.

What is nonprofit journalism?

Nonprofit journalism is a sustainable, impactful funding model in which philanthropic dollars (rather than investors) enable business revenues to support the organizational mission. Most of us consume nonprofit journalism every day, as many of today’s most impressive journalism outfits—NPR, ProPublica and the Marshall Project, among them—are nonprofits. Yet because it can be difficult from the outside to tell a nonprofit from a for-profit journalistic enterprise, nonprofit journalism remains unfamiliar, even while the high-quality reporting the nonprofit model enables has never been more important.

Why is Stranger’s Guide a nonprofit?

Stranger’s Guide showcases excellent storytelling from around the world. To make space for new narratives that will increase knowledge, we prioritize the stories that have too often been ignored, rather than the stories that will most appeal to advertisers. Our print magazine features beautiful photography and writing, designed to take readers on journeys on which they would never otherwise go.

Our goal is to offer new perspectives on places around the world and amplify the voices of people who live there.

Why should I support Stranger’s Guide?

Social polarization is among the most troubling trends in the US right now. Despite living in the age of Facebook and Google Maps, people have never been more alienated from one another. And for many Americans, the residents of foreign countries remain anonymous, their culture and customs little more than caricatures. As a publication designed to introduce readers to different places around the world, we seek to challenge assumptions at home and abroad. We offer a multi faceted portrait of locations, through reporting on culture, economics, politics and history. To do this, we work with writers from around the world, writing about their own home countries, rather than relying solely on American reporters.

The need for excellent journalism has never been clearer and we hope you will join us and give your support.

We're a 501(c)(3) and all donations (beyond the value of any reward received) are tax-deductible. If you'd like to invest more deeply in the project, email publisher Abby Rapoport at rapoport@strangersguide.com to learn more about the ways you can help support our work.

Abby Rapoport (Publisher) began her career as the first employee of the digital nonprofit Texas Tribune. From there she worked as political reporter for the Texas Observer and The American Prospect. Her work has also appeared in Glamour, The National Journal and The New Republic. From 2016-17, she served as Acting Publisher for the Texas Observer. She studied history at Grinnell College and held a writing fellowship at the Economic Policy Institute. She has served on the boards of the American Agora Foundation, which publishes Lapham’s Quarterly, and the Capital of Texas Media Foundation, which oversees the Austin Monitor. She chairs the Texas Democracy Foundation, which publishes the Texas Observer

Kira Brunner Don (Editor-in-Chief) worked as a magazine editor in New York for seventeen years and as a journalist in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. She studied philosophy at the New School’s Graduate Faculty and worked at a think tank at Columbia University before joining Lapham's Quarterly, where she was the Executive Editor for eight years. As the magazine’s first editorial hire, she worked with Lewis Lapham to create Lapham’s Quarterly, building both its circulation and its editorial vision. She is co-editor of the book The New Killing Fields: Massacre and the Politics of Intervention and is the founding Co-director of the Oakland Book Festival, a literary festival of ideas that takes place annually in California.

Risks and challenges

Life is made up of risks and challenges. As is always true in life, we don’t know what we don’t know. We do know that we have assembled a determined and capable team who believes wholeheartedly in our mission. There are always risks and challenges when undertaking a new production, but they seem unlikely. We have the first issue almost completed. Beyond that we are feeling inspired, excited and ready.
