20 Polaroid Cameras, One Click. Help my project the "Polaroid Matrix Flipbook" make it to NYC for the International Maker Faire. Read more

About this project
Im giving it a go here on Kickstarter in order to help send my project, the Polaroid Matrix Flipbook Camera, to the New York Maker Faire at the New York Hall of Science. Maker Faire is an event created by Make Magazine to "celebrate arts, crafts, engineering, science projects and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset."
The people at Make Magazine have been really supportive, soliciting donations on my behalf and even inviting me to present the Polaroid Matrix on Make:Live, airing on the night before the faire opens. Ive found funding for travel but I still need to buy film in order to demonstrate and give away flip books to Faire goers.
The project is comprised of 20 One-Step Polaroid cameras that have been modified for electronic remote shutter closure. Each camera is mounted on swivel bases along four sections of curved tubing. Attached end to end, these sections create a hoop of cameras eight-feet in diameter and capable of simultaneously capturing 20 images of a single individual at its center. Alternately the cameras may be oriented outward for 360 degree instant panoramic. Once an image (20 separate prints) has been shot, the prints are stacked and riveted together to create a flipbook.
This flip-book acts as a portable, analog, 3d animation instantly capable of rendering a moment in time while creating a visceral connection with the viewer that is increasingly being lost as communication technology advances.
The prototype was finished just prior to the 2008 discontinuation of Polaroid 600 instant film and with no alternate sources at the time, i was forced to put the project on hold.
In the late summer of 2010, "the Impossible Project" began sale of their PX600 Silver Shade film, making possible the continuation of the project.
The funds generated through Kick Starter will allow me to above all...BUY FILM!!! at approx $2.25 an image, times 20+ cameras, each time i hit that button it costs me around 45$ in film alone! $500 would help a lot (I'm buying a few hundred bucks worth myself) but the more $ I can raise the more demonstrations I can do for the attendees at Makerfaire. Check out their website if you have a chance:
