THE VOYAGEUR - Into The New World is Book Two in a 6-book series of 90-page graphic novels, illustrated by Nick Marinkovich (Underworld, Nightwolf, Impaler, Kenk) and written and created by documentary filmmaker and screenwriter Jeff Sturge (Mayday, Storming Juno, Cold Blood).
Watch INNERSPACE host Morgan Hoffman interview creators Jeff Sturge and Nick Marinkovich about The Voyageur!
The idea for The Voyageur came to Jeff back around 2009. Originally conceived as a vehicle to recreate the voyages of Samuel de Champlain, the fictional characters began to take on a life of their own and the story grew from there. He brought the idea to Nick, who was instantly intrigued and came on board as an illustrator and partner.
"I worked with Nick Marinkovich well over a decade ago, when I was at IDW. He was a promising young artist then, and he's more than fulfilled that promise. Take a look at the gorgeous work in this Kickstarter book, and back it if you can. History, weirdness, and stunning art--can't beat it!"
Jeff Mariotte - Editor-in-Chief IDW Publishing (2002-2004)
The artwork Nick's chosen is a unique photo-based imagery, heavily stylized to achieve a haunting look with regard to the characters and environment. All architecture, landscapes and wardrobe from the era have been meticulously researched for historical accuracy. The costumes and settings are taken from historical buildings and period drawings.
It's an amazing story set in an even more amazing period in time. This is the second of what's intended to be a six-book series with a cast that includes a roster of strong characters, both male and female, and interwoven storylines of other landmark events happening during this period.
After being handed a strange coin by his dying cousin before passing out from exhaustion, 15-year-old Fintan wakes up in an abandoned church. Rescued by a teenage runaway called Moria and her 8-year-old travelling companion Eliza, Fintan regains his strength and sets out to confront his pursuers.
While this is happening, the Inquisitor Father Sandoval - incensed at his agents' inability to retrieve the coin in Fintan's possession - has now personally joined the hunt. He heads to Ireland, determined to get it at all costs.
And for the first time, a third party, also searching for the coin reveals itself, led by the French explorer Samuel de Champlain.
But as Sandoval heads to Ireland, Fintan confronts his main agent, the Sheriff of Waterford, who's captured Fintan's mother in order to get the coin and kill Fintan in the process.
Fintan suddenly realizes he's bitten off more than he can chew and finds himself running for his life. Now a boy who's never been more than five miles from his house is about to be cast into a whirlwind adventure into the unknown...
We're already well into the book, but we've set an aggressive Spring 2017 release date and we have to keep the ball rolling. As you can already see, Nick’s put a lot into the art and keeping up the same level of respectability is going to require some help.
We need $12 000 dollars to finish the book. As with Book One, we are in the incredibly fortunate position of having signed on with Guernica Editions, an independent publishing house who've agreed to bring our book to retail. Now we just have to deliver a finished project.
SO WHERE DOES MY MONEY GO?
Out of our 12K goal, 46% (i.e. $5500.00) is immediately appropriate towards Kickstarter Fees; Purchasing our books & Ebooks (i.e. backer rewards) from Guernica Editions; Shipping costs and Editing.
That leaves us with 54% (i.e. $6500.00) to appropriate towards the actual production of the book.
This is a labour of love, folks...
Producing a 90-page graphic novel takes roughly 9-10 months from Jeff’s initial drafts of the script through to Nick handing in a press-ready book to Guernica. This includes a dedicated schedule of script revisions; editing; character designs; page and cover art; lettering and book design. These funds will help us maintain a full time work flow over the next 5 months so that we can deliver for our Spring Deadline.

Risks and challenges
Our risks are minimal. We've done the heavy lifting of fleshing out the story, laying down concept art and most importantly, finding a publisher. Our main challenge is meeting the aggressive deadline we've set for ourselves to get the book out by early spring. With your help, we'll be able to meet our goal and take you even further into this great adventure!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
