About this project
Studies show that our bodies performs better with natural daylight; children learn better, employees are happier and more alert and productive; customers linger longer; and patients heal faster. Our body’s circadian rhythm requires daylight nearly as much as air and water, or it will eventually lead to problems with health and well-being.
When we go outside we are refreshed by beautiful, clear, full-spectrum daylight. However, people only spend on average only 10% of their day outside, generally not nearly enough. Wanting to capitalize on the good feelings of natural light, SerraLux developed products to bring the power of daylight inside to improve our homes, schools, and workspaces with more of nature’s gift of natural illumination. And, in the process reduced the need for costly artificial lighting because—because daylight is free!
SerraView Smart Daylighters
Status: Currently in Prototype Phase
Our newest product is an active daylighting system (we call "Daylighters") that installs as easily as ordinary window blinds with just 4 screws! SerraView harvests daylight from outside by redirecting it upward and deep into the interior of the room; providing illumination which is then diffused downward for higher levels of natural, glare-free, full spectrum lighting. All while preserving the all-important views out the window.
SerraView Smart Daylighters looks like a set of transparent blinds; consisting of a head rail and clear horizontal acrylic slats. Built into the head-rail is a fully-autonomous sun-tracking system used to rotate the slats to provide optimum levels of daylighting according the sun's elevation in the sky.
Each optically clear 2” slats are multiple, side-by-side, clear acrylic optical elements with microscopic gaps. These gaps work like internal mirrors, redirecting the full-spectrum daylight to the ceiling deeply into the space. The light is then diffusely reflected off the ceiling downward to illuminate work surfaces/desktops/living area below with full-spectrum natural lighting.
SerraView is ideal for windows that have direct sun with sun angles greater than 30 degrees, for very large rooms, or when you want to control where the daylight is redirected.
The daylighting system has internal batteries and photovoltaic recharging, no need for wiring and electricity. In addition, the Daylighters have a Bluetooth receiver, enabling a cell phone application technology to override the sun-tracking system. The app can control one Daylighter or groups of Daylighters.

Installing SerraView Smart Daylighters
SerraView Smart Daylighters are active daylighting systems that install as easily as ordinary window blinds. Customized to the window size and shape, you install SerraView in the upper portion of the window or typically down to eye level. You can then use a standard window treatment (blinds, drapery, shutters) on the lower portion of the window if sun blocking or privacy is desired. This way, you continue to get full-spectrum lighting while blocking unwanted downward sunlight. And the need for electric lighting down.
Product Development to Date
We started with an idea: how to use our patented daylighting technology in our daylighting film, and develop an active daylighting system; one which brings in more glare-free daylight for longer periods of time from windows. We experimented with our daylight redirecting film and moveable window coverings, and created the Proof of Concept Model below (pre-Prototype):
The Concept Model started from a window blind kit, plus we applied our patented film daylight redirecting technology to the slats to achieve light redirection. We were ecstatic how much and how deeply a swath of daylight deeply penetrated the space! This prompted us to develop a “macro” version of the film technology to virtually eliminate glare, provide full-spectrum illumination, and to achieve optical clarity of the slats. To do this, we sandwiched multiple, side-by-side, clear acrylic optical elements with microscopic gaps within each slat and Prototype I was born. As the assembly method is improved through development, the daylight will become more uniform (rather than the squiggly lines seen in the video of Prototype I).
Status of SerraView Smart Daylighters
Currently, SerraView is in the development and testing stage. We are fine-tuning the physical aspects of the daylighting system; making them lighter in weight and more optically clear, and with a bluetooth interface. Our goals include achieving the greater uniformity of redirected daylight as demonstrated by the Concept Model into the fully developed and ready-to-manufacture SerraView Smart Daylighters. We anticipate a fully-installable product by summer 2015. Kickstarter funding would help us finish development and commercialize the product. Below is the latest update:

SerraGlaze Daylight Redirecting Film
Status: Currently shipping & installing
Our premier product, SerraGlaze Daylight Redirecting Film is a patented single film applied to the interior surface of the window. This thin, flexible, recyclable acrylic film contains micro-structured “louvers” that redirect the incoming daylight upwards in the room, turning the ceiling into a natural light fixture that spreads full-spectrum natural daylight downward and throughout the space. Transparent, cost-effective, glare-reducing, easy to install, and commercially available today, SerraGlaze is effective with both direct sun and even when there is no direct sun. It is most effective when the sun elevation is 40° to 70°, typically a southern orientation (southeast to southwest) in the northern hemisphere, opposite in the southern hemisphere.
SerraGlaze is the perfect solution for shallower spaces, where daylight would normally illuminate the area near the window, yet leaves the rest of the room dark. Typically, 8 square feet of SerraGlaze is sufficient to brighten up 120 to 200 square feet of floor area. With SerraView, it can brighten up to 160 to 240 square feet!
Pictured is a scaled model with SerraGlaze (SG) installed in the clerestory position (above 6′) in the left side space, and Plain Glass in the right side space. To mimic a real life scenario, light has been blocked below the 6′ level with “shades”. Most evident is that throughout the day a higher and more evenly distributed, and comfortable level of beneficial natural illumination exists throughout the SerraGlaze space.
- Billion dollar global organization specified and selected SerraGlaze for its New York City office; the first phase is under way.
- Globally recognized architectural firm RTKL applied SerraGlaze to its Dallas, Texas headquarters.
- Currently being considered for the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Egypt, a charter school system in Nevada, other hi-tech firms located in Silicon Valley and India.
- Green Light New York selected SerraGlaze for display in their Daylighting Lab.
- Scheduled to be installed and monitored on the Facade Integrated Technologies (FIT) Testing Facility at the University of Oregon

People! Many buildings were constructed without regard to natural lighting needs as electric lighting would suffice. In recent years, studies show that people's health and well-being suffer without enough natural lighting plus the costs of the electricity has sharply risen. As many of us spend a majority of the day indoors, it only made sense to find ways in which to improve indoor quality while reducing electrical costs. John Mardaljevic is Professor of Building Daylight Modelling at the School of Civil & Building Engineering, Loughborough University. Prof. Mardaljevic validated the Radiance lighting simulation program under real sky conditions—the definitive study of its kind, establishing Radiance as the de facto standard for lighting simulation. Michael Wigginton is an award winning architect who studied at Cambridge University School of Architecture, where he qualified in 1964. He has written over 40 published articles and books on architecture and technology, and on architectural theory. SerraLux grew from the work of British engineer and founder Peter J Milner. Chief engineer of De Lorean Motor Cars Limited, Milner also served as senior engineer for Chrysler European. One of Peter’s creations, the Milner Mirror (an aerodynamically efficient wing mirror that used prismatic structures) led to the development of the SerraGlaze prototype.
In 1999, David Willetts joined Peter Milner, putting together an initial round of “angel funding” for Peter. Willetts career included work in US, Canada, France, and UK. While working with major global industrial and manufacturing firms, David gained experience in new business creation, start-ups, business turnaround, and corporate finance. The men shared a passion for innovation as they sought to realize value from Peter’s creative technology. After Milner’s untimely death, Willetts continued developing SerraGlaze in the UK, and vowed to bring SerraLux to America. Through his efforts, the daylighting technology that Peter Milner envisioned has becoming a reality.

Bob Ford (President and CEO) has broad experience within green energy technologies (solar, wind, and energy efficiency). As co-founder of Solaicx Inc., he raised over $73 million in VC funding to grow the company into the most innovative silicon ingot manufacturer in the world.
David Willetts (Chairman and Managing Director, European Operations) was CEO of SerraLux’s former parent company, Bending Light, and has been involved with regeneration initiatives in London for over 25 years. Before joining Bending Light, he founded Reeve Hepburn an international boutique corporate strategy business.
David Robins (Board of Directors) has been Chairman and CEO of the investment bank ING Barings, and a Board member of the ING Group. Before joining the ING Group, he spent 18 years with Phillips & Drew and UBS. At SerraLux, we leverage the tech skills of our crack development team, the strategic guidance of our experienced management, and the support of established partner relationships to develop our products.
Possible manufacturing challenges
We have finalized negotiations with a high tech tool manufacturing partner for the microstructured acrylic film that becomes SerraGlaze. While we anticipate no delays implementing a production scale-up, unforeseen events can occur. For example, a high volume order from another of the manufacturer's customers could delay the delivery of SerraGlaze film, pushing back delivery dates.
SerraView is in prototype phase and there is some risk in commercializing the product. While we have engaged some of the leading experts to ensure that the transition into becoming a commercial product, there is a risk that it will be delayed or that the product will not perform exactly as expected.
We believe that the timeline established above is realistic, but even the most well-planned development process may hit the occasional bump, or experience unforeseen delays.
