Jurassic Block is a 5 inch by 5 inch square of premium cast acrylic filled with actual fossils of your favorite dinosaurs, some of which are over 150 million years old. It is simply, the most comprehensive collection of dino fossils ever assembled in such a tiny space. Half science exhibit, half art piece, Jurassic Block is inspired by the dinosaurs featured in Jurassic Park.

The cast of ancient fossils featured in this collection:

...and our lives changed forever. The movie, Jurassic Park, opened in theaters across the country, and our very impressionable young selves were fortunate enough to have seen its original run on the big screen. We were instantly hooked. We became fascinated with the dinosaurs, the Jeeps, and even the those pesky little humans. From then on out, our quest for the ultimate JP collectable began.

it would never be enough.. until we owned the actual dinosaurs
it would never be enough.. until we owned the actual dinosaurs

We began to collect every piece of JP merch we could get a hold of. Action figures, models, toy cars, lunch boxes, video games and even some sleek pajamas. But it was never enough. It would never be enough…until we owned the actual dinosaurs. Until we owned some actual, good old fashioned genetic material. We say "25 years in the making", but in actuality, its 150+ million years in the making!

When you see these fossils in person, you can easily make out the dinosaur's bone or flesh structure. There are vivid textures and lines in each piece of fossil hinting at what form of material they made up on the dinosaurs bodies, and you can spend hours looking at them under a light source imagining these giant creatures walking around in their time. Amazing to think that you are looking at fossils of creatures from hundreds of millions of years ago!

Below is an overview of all the dinosaurs included in Jurassic Block along with their age estimates.

Fossilized Amber Insect (100,000,000 to 55,000,000 Years Ago)

Throughout the movie, fossilized amber insects play a huge role. They’re what's used to bring the dinosaurs back to life! "Dino DNA!". Here we have an authentic fossilized insect, that could have very well fed on dinosaurs as well as other fascinating extinct species. Our amber fossils date back to as far as 100,000,000 years ago! These specimen fall between Cretaceous to Eocene Era.

Dinosaur Eggshell (65,000,000 Years Ago)

Every Jurassic Block comes with a piece of an authentic fossilized eggshell. These shells are about 65,000,000 years old and come from a collection of theropods and sauropods. They are much thicker than what you’d expect! Pushing their way through one of these; no wonder these creatures grew to be so strong and powerful! The inner portions of the shells have beautiful ripples and lines that look awesome under closer inspection! You can really tell that a dinosaur was growing inside this textured surface.

Tyrannosaurus Rex (68,000,000 Years Ago)

The king of all carnivores ever, is of course, the Tyrannosaurus Rex or "T-Rex". Our collection of T-Rex fossils comes from South Dakota, and dates to about 68,000,000 years ago. The finish has a gorgeous dark brown patina. We bet you would never have believed you would own a piece of a T-Rex :)

Raptor (75,000,000 Years Ago)

Who loves Raptors? We do, of course! They are fast, smart, powerful, organized, and can even, perhaps, open doors!? Even though the movie misrepresented the creatures in both size and appearance, the world will likely remember them as such: 6 foot fall, with binocular vision, and killer claws on both feet. In reality, they were much smaller, and probably even had feathers instead of lizard scales. It has even been hypothesized that their large hands were actually used to steal eggs from other dinosaurs, rather than fight and claw though battles with T-Rex. Our Raptor fossils have been sourced from Mongolia and the midwestern United States. We knew that including Raptors in the Jurassic Block was a must.

Sauropod (65,000,000 Years Ago)

Sauropods were the largest living land animals in all of history thanks to their enormously long necks, some of which stretched to over 55 feet long! They were represented in every one of the Jurassic Park films multiple times as the gentle reminder that some dinosaurs were peaceful. Every Jurassic Block comes with an authentic sauropod chunk, the majority of which are of the Alamosaurus, the largest living creature that ever lived in the United States. At almost 100 feet long, these gentle giants roamed what is now modern day Texas. It is a piece of one of the biggest animals of all time! How cool is that?

Stegosaurus (150,000,000 Years Ago)

Probably the most iconic silhouettes of all the herbivores is that of the the Stegosaurus. Those large back plates on its back make for one of the coolest looking dinosaurs ever, It is probably our personal favorite. Our Stegosaurus fossils are very old considering that they lived between 150,000,000 and 155,000,000 million years ago! We have procured some rare fossilized Stegosaurus ribs thats pieces will be included with all Jurassic Blocks.

Hadrosaur (80,000,000 Years Ago)

Hadrosaurs were a family of large duck-billed herbivores found in both east and west North America. These gentle giants possessed some very interesting characteristics, including the ability to walk on either 2 or 4 legs and had some very interesting shaped silhouettes, given their unique skull shape. Most notably the genus of Parasaurolophus, featured very elongated skull crests which had been hypothesized to act as resonating chambers to produce communicating sounds. In the iconic movie "The Land Before Time", the character 'Ducky' was portrayed as a Hadrosaur species.

Triceratops (68,000,000 Years Ago)

These three-horned herbivores need no introduction. Only second in terms of popularity behind the T-Rex, Triceratops are loved throughout the world, making them the true kings of all herbivores. Our Triceratops fossils come from the Hell Creek formation of North Dakota, where they first appeared about 68,000,000 years ago.

Mosasaur (90,000,000 Years Ago)

Mosasaurs were the largest marine lizards that ever lived, growing up to 55 feet long! Their double-hinged jaws allowed them to gulp down prey whole. And if that didn’t work, mosasaurs still had dozens of dinosaur like, sharp teeth to finish the job. The aquarium featured in Jurassic World movie had a very exaggerated in size mosasaurus seen feasting on a great white.

Pterosaur (150,000,000 Years Ago)

Pterosaurs were the most famous of all the flying lizards and also the largest flying animals that ever lived, some growing to over 40 feet in wingspan. These fascinating creatures had the ability to walk on all fours, and even swim! They were comfortable in most environments ranging from forested jungles to seas, where they first appeared almost 230,000,000 years ago.

Spinosaurus (112,000,000 Years Ago)

The Spinosaurus was the largest known land predator in all of history. Larger than the T-Rex in nearly every dimension. At up to 60 feet long, capped off with a long crocodile like snout, the Spinosaurus was the apex predator of the Upper Cretaceous period. Its large, fin like, spine has been hypothesized to regulate body temperature or even help with swimming. Its true function, however, remains unknown for certain.

Ankylosaurus (68,000,000 Years Ago)

The iconic armored dinosaurs, the Ankylosaurs, grew to up to 25 feet long and were covered with robust plates known as ostreoderms. Their tales featured a large club probably used for self defense, which was perfect as they were known to live side by side with a dangerous predator, the T-Rex, during the cretaceous period. Our Ankylosaurus fossils come from the Hell Creek Formation.

Allosaurus (155,000,000 Years Ago)

Similar in appearance but much older than the T-Rex, the Allosaurus dinosaurs were the top predators of the late Jurassic Period. With fossils suggesting growth of up to 39 feet in length. Their most visible differentiator from the T-Rex were their much longer arms which had 3 claws instead of 2. Allosaurus roughly translates to “different lizard”, termed for its unique vertebrae shape at the time of its discovery. Our Allosaurus fossils come from the Morrison Formation in the Central United States.

Pachycephalosaurus (75,000,000 Years Ago)

One of the most memorable herbivores featured in “The Lost World”, the Pachycephalosaurus, was known for its thick skull dome, made from several inches of dense bone. It had been hypothesized that the skull was used in combat with other pachys, similar to the behavior of the modern day Bighorn Sheep. This skull dome had remarkable abilities to heal itself making it suitable for handling the injuries caused by head butting activity. Our Pachy fossils come from the Central United States.

"Mystery" Theropod

"Theropod" is the name given to the group of carnivorous, bi-ped dinosaurs. Each Jurassic Block comes with a "Mystery" Theropod in addition to the T-Rex, Allosaurus, Spinosaurus and Raptor Theropods which are also included in this collection. This "Mystery" Theropod will be revealed at the end of the Kickstarter campaign and will be exclusive to this Kickstarter campaign. just for our backers. The retail versions will not include this dinosaur! The completed Block will include the dinosaur's name and origin date, similar to the rest of the collection's presentation.

We buy all of our dinosaur fossils from professional curators & dealers of fossils. Dinosaur fossils are sourced from all over the world. It can be very difficult to track down some of these dinosaurs, and many dinosaurs can only be obtained as very large and expensive pieces. This makes the Jurassic Block all the more valuable, as to obtain these fossils individually would cost a fortune.

We will be including a certificate of authenticity with every Jurassic Block to provide a proof that you own an authentic dinosaur fossil collection originating with us. Included with this certificate will be a report of the curators we are purchasing fossils from so you have a paper trail back to the fossil sources to prove authenticity.

Acrylic or resin embedment casting is the process of inserting items in a water clear, hard casing. This enhances the items you cast in 3 ways: it protects the precious/fragile items, it sets these items in a way that is easily viewed from all angles, and lastly it "wets" the surface of these items allowing for rough or dusty surfaces to appear clear with all of their finest details shown (kind of like how applying wax to a car makes the paint really vivid and clear).

Our embedment casting process took a lot of trial and error as we literally had to develop a new process to cast such large pieces of fossil without having any imperfections occur in the cast.

FREE CASE We are excited to propose our first stretch goal is to include a free storage / display box case to all backers once we meet our stretch goal of $25,000. Hitting this goal means all Jurassic Blocks will come shipped in these special box cases, as well as with additional protective shipping material to ensure the cases show up in great shape. We already have the case designed and would be thrilled to be able to include them.

FREE MAGNIFYING GLASS At $50,000 we will include, for free, a high quality folding metal magnifying glass, that truly helps bring the display to life!

Additional stretch goals will be announced throughout the campaign and will all be FREE items that enhance your Jurassic Block experience.

Below is list of the rewards for pledging for our campaign. As a special thank you for helping us make this project a reality, we are offering you backers special discounted pricing, well below what the expected retail will be. For those that get in early, we are offering an extra low price for the first 100 backers that buy 1x or 2x Jurassic blocks. Get one for you and someone special.

As we mentioned, we will be working to get these Jurassic Blocks out just after the holidays! We know these will be a big hit, holiday gift idea for someone special, or maybe even for yourself :) To understand how we intend to achieve this target, below is a timeline of events from now until we ship which doubles a timeline of the geologic eras that the dinosaurs existed in (don't worry, it wont take us 252 million years).

Risks and challenges

We have worked out all manufacturing details, and have already produced multiple prototypes and samples. As a highly hands on team, we are overseeing every step of manufacturing. Our dinosaur fossils are being sourced from a highly reputable, select group of dealers and collectors- some of which have decades of experience. We have already collected a large amount of fossils and specimens that we are going to be using on Jurassic Blocks made for our backers. This means we can work on the early stages of production for the first batch while the campaign is live, meaning delivery of the first batch could happen even before our timeline estimates. We are highly prepared for this project!
