This is not your typical dungeon crawl. Unique and intuitive Euro-style mechanics combined with strong co-operation and a dark and deeply immersive theme put Perdition’s Mouth in its own category. It combines the tactical elements seen in blockbusters such as Gloomhaven, the struggle to survive from Posthuman, and the awesome dungeon crawling of Descent.
No dice? Rondels? No gamemaster? Hand management? Crucial cooperation? All in a dungeon crawl? Yes! Keep reading and see...
The game designers of Perdition's Mouth: Abyssal Rift (Timo Multamäki, Thomas Klausner and Kevin Wilson) set out to implement a new kind of dungeon crawl. One that embraces the European school of game design with clever mechanisms which emphasizes strategy and minimizing luck. Cooperation, planning and the enemy response deck eliminate the need for chucking dice, creating a tense combat environment with meaningful decisions! The rondels provide another tactical layer, including the enemy’s devious and challenging AI.
Kevin Wilson, famed designer of Arkham Horror and Descent: “The way the rondel worked, the unique feel of each hero, and the gritty horror fantasy theme all appealed to me, as there was nothing else like it on the market. I think this is a real winner!
The game combines strong tactical play with a level of challenge in a co-op that even Arkham Horror fans will appreciate. Best of all, it all comes together in a simple but very satisfying way. In other words, it's a project I'm delighted to have been involved in!”
One more thing that makes Perdition’s Mouth appealing is the easy-to-learn rules. We’ve spent over four years working hard to make them straightforward and understandable so the game plays smoothly without being fiddly. Typically game testers and demo participants learn to play in 15 minutes. A usual game round takes less than 10 minutes, even with 6 players. But don’t let the ease of learning make you think there’s not much there. Deep, strategic cooperation will be required for your band of heroes to make it through to the Abyssal Rift and maybe even come backalive. All the players are active throughout each rounds as they can play cards outside their own turn to help the current player.
No. After discussions with our fans we have decided not to do any this time. We want to make this Kickstarter campaign as Kickstarter was originally intended - as a tool for creating a fantastic project, not just a way to persuade people to pay double money for a box with a few extra figures. Therefore, most unlocked social or stretch goals will become part not just of KS orders, but will also be included in the retail edition of Perdition's Mouth: Abyssal Rift. Any other unlocked content will be made available by other means such as separated items (case of resin miniatures which require extra packaging and handling) or otherwise. Thus, by joining this KS, you are helping everyone.
The heroes you’ll play are not the usual bland, stereotypical adventurers you’ll find in most fantasy settings. These are imperfect individuals, each with their strengths and weaknesses, and they will have to prove that they are heroes through their actions and not through their boasting.
All miniatures are delivered UNPAINTED, but PRE-ASSEMBLED. You can find more art and details about the game’s characters on our website.
As this is an existed, tested and true game, we have plenty of material on how the game plays. But nothing is better than Catweazle's excellent "Learn to play" series of videos. Enjoy!
And of course we do have a rulebook, which we are frequently updating, but for the Revised Edition we're following the example of slightly bigger brands: We will break the rulebook in to two: the actual rules and examples will be two separate booklets.
We want to make it as easy as possible for you to find out everything you want about the game, so here are some other videos that might help you:

We made a bold decision to work with different stretch goal schema as typically seen. We understand that not knowing the goals might give some extra tension, but also leaves important information out. And this time we need you to have that information. We'd kindly ask you to provide feedback about the Stretch Goals scheme, so we can consider what to do in our next game.
After some discussion, we feel that social goals should be defined in a slightly different way from what we've done previously. We will now only use the three forums we know best: Boardgamegeek, Facebook and Twitter. And this time instead of tracking the 'likes' we'll try something new:
For Boardgamegeek, ratings to any of Perdition's Mouth entries will work better than just 'being a fan'. This also serves newcomers better by giving more accurate ratings on BGG. We can then calculate how many ratings are given to PM products.
As this is an experiment, we are aware that it could mean that all social goals will be unlocked by a few active users. If that happens, so be it. We also welcome suggestions on how to improve this scheme.
We're excited to make available some add-ons that will be available for purchase with and after this campaign:
And more are likely to be added during the campaign! All shipping costs to Add-ons are determined in BackerKit based on actual shipping costs.
To minimize costs for our backers, we are covering the cost of shipping the completed games from manufacturer to distribution locations in Australia, Germany & the US. We have established relationships with reliable fulfilment centers that are experienced with major projects.
Due to the high cost of manufacturing and assembling all of the custom parts for Perdition’s Mouth, the last leg of the journey has to be partially covered by backers. All that quality content adds up - the estimated weight of the revised edition, alone, is 5 kg!
Please add the following amounts (US$) to your pledge to cover shipping to your home:
Dragon Dawn Productions has an unique structure in the board game industry. The brainchild of Timo Multamäki and his wife, Tiinaliisa, is a consortium of people based in different countries who are passionate about the games we produce. The consortium uses digital technologies to collaborate on all aspects of the game: development, production and promotion.
The different tasks and responsibilities are shouldered voluntarily by those best suited according to skill and time availability. We are all actively engaged in the board game world and walk among you on social media.
DDP team is open to anyone who shares our passion. Let us know, how’d you like to contribute.
Yes, we are using BackerKit for gathering survey data after the project funding period. It will make your life, and ours, easier.
Risks and challenges
While nothing in life is without risk, this is neither our first game nor our first Kickstarter campaign, and we are confident in our ability to make a good job of it. Black Hat, a trick-taking board game for 2-6 players, successfully funded in December 2014 and the 1st edition of Perdition’s Mouth: Abyssal Rift funded in December 2015 are our proof of success. Since then we have successfully funded, in August 2017, the Traitor Guard expansion for Perdition’s Mouth: Abyssal Rift. It remains on target to ship to backers before the end of this year. We’ve been here before with this similar products, we know what can be achieved and we are prepared for any hiccups in the process.
Component quality is very important to us, as owners of the first edition of Perdition’s Mouth: Abyssal Rift can testify, but so is delivering value for money. For this reason, the Revised Edition will be produced in China. The distribution will be handled by established partners with whom we work closely to ensure that all packaging and handling is done properly.
We are committed to making sure that all of our backers receive their copies before the game reaches retail stores, and August 2018 is written in stone as the final deadline for availability. As breathing room, we’ve added two extra months to the production schedule to handle any unexpected delays, so there is a chance that deliveries will be earlier than announced. We know that this detail is of utmost importance to our backers and we’d rather deliver early than late!
Our team has earned a good reputation for being responsive on BGG and Kickstarter and we plan to keep that reputation intact. We are also aiming for total transparency during the production process. We intend to provide regular updates throughout the production process on tasks as they progress, including any delays or roadblocks that might come up.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
