Darwinning! is a competitive game about the evolution of Species. Each player strives to become the most successful Species over four Eras of evolution, by having the biggest Population, being the best predator, and being able to live in the most Environments.
As a player, you can grow your Population, re-adjust to take advantage of new Environments, acquire useful Traits or climb the Food Chain in order to overtake other Species. All of these choices are available by playing better combinations of cards than your opponents.
Keep an eye on what your opponents are doing! If someone ends an Era by getting rid of all their cards, the strongest combination becomes the weakest, and its player goes away empty-handed.
Darwinning! is a game where your actions directly affect your opponents. With easy to learn rules, Darwinning! is very suitable for families and players of age around 9 and over. These rules also provide a lot of decision space for tactical gameplay that will appeal to more advanced game players. Games typically last for between 45 and 75 minutes, depending on player count.
Add-ons will be made available during the campaign (see stretch-goals).
A standard game of Darwinning! is played over four Eras but you can play over three if you’d like a shorter variant. A single Era is one hand of cards (10), it ends when the first player runs out of cards.
Every Era you will try to improve your Species by winning rounds to gain Species improvement cards. If you win a card, you can use it to move up the Food Chain, increase your Population, adapt to a new Environment or gain a new Trait.
At the end of each Era your Population needs to be fed. Its ability to feed depends upon where it can thrive and which other Species it can eat. The number of Environments available for feeding the Population decreases over the course of the game, providing a naturally increasing challenge.
Depending on whether you have to much or not enough food, your Population will grow or shrink. Your Population can shrink through being eaten by other players’ Species that are higher on the Food Chain than you.
After four Eras, every Species is scored according to their place on the Food Chain, Population size, Environments, and Traits. The player with the most successful Species wins the game.

Our aim is to make Darwinning! available for play for people all around the world. With language independent components this means providing rulebooks in as many different languages as possible. If you’d like to see Darwinning! available with rules in your language, please contact us. We will work with you to make sure that the rulebook is professionally formatted to match the other rulebooks for the game and we will then offer these rulebooks in polls for printing as per our stretch goal targets. We will also make the full colour pdfs available for free download, ensuring that everyone can access these rules even if they aren’t included in the box.
Like all games DDP produce, we have thoroughly play-tested Darwinning! We can already promise you the digital rulebook in several languages for sure, namely English, German, French, Portuguese, and Finnish.
Klick here to access the English rulebook on BGG, along with an expanding list of translated rulebooks.
Note that all of these contain preliminary art. Updated art examples are presented above.

We tried to make shipping as simple as possible, so we only have three shipping categories:
- $9 to US and EU
- $12 to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Switzerland and Norway
- $15 everywhere else
We will ship the game using trusted distribution partners who are based in the USA and in Germany, meaning that backers in the EU and in the USA should not have to pay customs fees. The game will also be available for pick-up at Essen Spiel (October 2018). If you are planning to attend, come visit us at our booth and pick up your pledge right there. Let us know in advance, and we will include an Essen Gamer promo Species as some recompense for the shipping fees you paid as part of the campaign pledge. Of course the game will not only be available at Essen Spiel, it can also be sent right to your doorstep by the end of October.
Darwinning! has been designed by the whole Multamäki family - Timo Multamäki, the designer of the well-regarded trick-taking game Black Hat, his wife, Tiinaliisa Multamäki, and their 11 year old son Wyrm. As with all DDP Games, Darwinning! has been developed through the collaborative work of an international team, including Nikolas Patrakka, who led development of the two player rules, and Lee Broderick, Andrea Ryffel and David Hladky who carried out a variety of editing and development tasks.
The Darwinning! art & design team includes Jamie Noble, Matthias Catrein, Akha Hulzebos, Lars Munch, Tony Cotterill and a few others.
Dragon Dawn Productions has a unique structure in the board game industry. The brainchild of Timo Multamäki and his wife, Tiinaliisa, it is a consortium of people based in different countries who are passionate about the games we produce. The consortium uses digital technologies to collaborate on all aspects of our games: development, production and promotion.
The different tasks and responsibilities are shouldered voluntarily by those best suited according to skill and time availability. We are all actively engaged in the board game world and walk among you on social media.
The DDP team is open to anyone who shares our passion. Let us know if you’d like to join us.
Risks and challenges
While nothing in life is without risk, this is neither our first game nor our first Kickstarter campaign, and we are confident in our ability to make a good job of it. Black Hat (2014), Perdition’s Mouth: Abyssal Rift (1st edition 2015) and PM:Traitor Guard (2017) have all shipped to backers, so are proof of our ability to deliver on our promises. The revised edition of Perdition’s Mouth: Abyssal Rift (2017) is on track to ship this October. We’ve been here before with similar products, we know what can be achieved and we are prepared for any hiccups in the process.
Component quality is very important to us, as owners of our other games can testify, but so is delivering value for money. The distribution will be handled by established partners with whom we work closely to ensure that all packaging and handling is done properly.
We are committed to ensuring that all of our backers receive their copies before the game reaches retail stores, and October 2018 is written in stone as the final deadline for availability. As breathing room, we’ve added two extra months to the production schedule to handle any unexpected delays, so there is a chance that deliveries will be earlier than announced. We know that this detail is of utmost importance to our backers and we’d rather deliver early than late!
Our team has earned a good reputation for being responsive on BGG and Kickstarter and we plan to keep that reputation intact. We are also aiming for total transparency during the production process. We intend to provide regular updates throughout the production process on tasks as they progress, including any delays or roadblocks that might come up.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
