About this project
A recent event and new goal
On June 8, Buck and I were featured on the Derek and Romaine Show on Sirius Out Q radio to promote the “Mr. Angel” Kickstarter campaign. When taking calls from listeners, one caller actually mocked the project and called Buck a ‘Freak.’ Buck and the hosts calmly handled the caller’s taunt and turned it around and spoke to the need for education about trans issues. This incident, for me, spoke volumes about the importance of this project and it’s aggressive educational outreach. It has strengthened my resolve!
As you can see, we hit our $6,000 goal which is wonderful! From the bottom of my heart, I thank all of the incredibly generous folks who contributed. Never having done Kickstarter before, we set the goal low in order to reach it. Realistically, we need closer to $9,000 to move the project to the next step. If you can help by donating at any level or forwarding this link to friends, we truly appreciate your support and participation. - Dan
'Mr. Angel' chronicles the extraordinary life of transgender advocate, educator and porn pioneer, Buck Angel. His in-your-face style of activism has audiences challenged and outraged by his insistence that he is simply “a man who happens to have a vagina.” Buck has spent a lifetime facing relentless opposition and yet lives his truth with no apology. This feature-length documentary explores the source of his unwavering message of self acceptance and his drive to publicly confront the male/female binary head on. This is a story of amazing perseverance, empowerment, and an unlikely hero.
For the past 6 years, we’ve followed Buck struggling to create a new genre in the adult industry and working as an advocate and educator who is passionate about health, body image, and basic human rights. We’ve also documented his relationship with his wife, Elayne, and their life together with their seven dogs in the Yucatan. From home, the film follows the couple on trips to Berlin's Porn Festival, to Philly to conduct body image workshops, to Yale University for a safe sex presentation, and to the Porn Oscars in Las Vegas.
Not completely aware of their child’s notoriety are Bill and Patty, Buck's parents. It has taken them decades to come to terms with losing their daughter and gaining a ‘Buck.’ They agreed to let us film a moving reunion with Buck at his sister’s home. It is a powerful moment that reveals Buck’s early history, his struggles with drug addiction and suicide attempts; and speaks volumes about acceptance and unconditional love.
It has been an amazing journey documenting Buck's colorful and complex life. We just finished shooting with a final trip to Mexico to follow Buck while he is dealing with some health issues that have come up due to years of sustained use of testosterone. It was an unexpected turn in the story but an extremely important topic. There still is very little research about hormone use and its impact on trans bodies. Buck gave us complete access to this vulnerable period in his life because he is passionate about trans health education.
This feature length documentary explores Buck's poignant and confronting story to understand the complexities of someone who survives seemingly insurmountable obstacles and then seeks the spotlight to share his universal message of self love and absolute acceptance. "Mr. Angel" sheds new light on evolving discussions about gender, body image, sexuality, health, and survival.
How You Can Help
As of last month, the shooting phase of this 5 year production was completed. Now, we need to raise $9,000 to hire a seasoned editor to help sculpt Buck's story. When we began shooting in 06, we pitched the project to several broadcasters and a few were VERY interested after seeing some of the preliminary footage. However, they said to bring the project back when it was closer to completion (grrr!) So, this is a crucial time for this project and your support in vital to its success.
With the help of an editor, we will create a cut of the film to re-submit to broadcasters and distributors with the hopes of securing completion funding. Our goal is to have 'Mr. Angel' ready for film festival submission by this fall.
Thus far, this project has mostly been self-financed because we are passionate about this amazing story and its educational importance. Please help by donating what you can and please share this project with your friends and social / other networks. We need to build a strong community of supporters to help complete and give voice to 'Mr. Angel.'
