ALASKA is a female-driven psychological thriller feature film, written, directed, and produced by women. It follows small-town Gemma in Los Angeles as her biggest dreams turn nightmarish and she must confront her deepest fears- past, present, and future.
The film aims to answer: if fear lives in the mind and we are not our thoughts- but instead far vaster and greater- mustn’t we hold the ability to face and overcome even our darkest fears?
ALASKA's themes promote mindfulness, female empowerment, real beauty and facing fears. The screenplay for ALASKA won First Place in The Los Angeles Screenplay Contest in 2015 and placed in Scriptapalooza and the StoryPros Screenplay Contest in 2016. The project has been featured on several blogs, was a Staff Pick on Technicolor’s website, Creative District, and is a recipient of Big Vision Empty Wallet’s Kickstart Diversity Program!
Writer/Director Racheal's previous short films have played at Atlanta Horror Film Festival, Shriekfest, Thriller! Chiller!, and Screamfest Film Festival, to name a few, so ALASKA is guaranteed to deliver some scares! The team is so excited because the film has used and will continue to use primarily on-set practical SFX, blended with minimal post-production VFX, to create the film's various creatures and sub-worlds.
Cameos in ALASKA
During the flashbacks shoot, we had so much fun filming indie-rock band TWIN PEAKS for a cameo in ALASKA, during their sound check before their show at The Georgia Theatre in Athens! Racheal strategically wrote the screenplay for several fun cameo opportunities like this, so that we can feature cool artists and name talent around every corner!
A note from the Director, Racheal Cain Stephens:
My team and I have come a long way in bringing ALASKA to life but I won't shy away from admitting the road to get here has been anything but easy. Over the last six years, I've worked just about every odd job imaginable – waitress, bartender, receptionist, barista, Etsy shop owner, babysitter, social media videographer, selling vintage furniture at flea markets on weekends, and day-playing in just about every field in the industry - just to be able to keep this film my main priority.
Not only have I spent countless hours writing and developing the concept, but I’ve also borrowed money from family members, tapped every resource, called in every favor, and poured virtually every penny to my name into the project to get it to where it is today.
Because I believe in it. I believe in this film and it's potential for positive impact with every fiber of my being.
...But the reality is, I can’t go any further alone.
I've set up this Kickstarter because I have reached the end of my road, financially. In order to continue on with casting, development and pre-production for block two, before any additional financing would kick in, I’ll have to pay team members rates that far surpass what I can generate on my own. The money raised from this campaign will be utilized in several major areas of pre-production (as illustrated in the next section) but, in short, these funds will serve as a bridge for us, keeping the dream alive and keeping us on track for next year's submission deadlines.
Earlier this year, I made the frightening leap of faith of investing everything I had to get us to this point and to show you and potential financiers what my incredible team and I are capable of.
But we need you to make the jump.
Nothing in this world scares me more or makes me feel more vulnerable than asking for help. But what ALASKA has shown me, time and time again, is that, if we can only muster the courage to move through our fear, life's best, most beautiful things always seem to lie on the other side.
We've budgeted everything we need to maintain momentum, stay on schedule, and resume development and pre-production for the 2nd phase of filming in LA.
Here's the breakdown:
The funds generated from this Kickstarter will enable us to immediately:
- Bring back our incredible Casting Director to finish casting the remaining supporting roles.
- Hire back our talented Editor to start cutting the flashbacks scenes from the footage we filmed in Georgia.
- Hire a talented and experienced Producer to elevate and build out our production team and help with the heavy lifting of such a logistically complex project.
- Hire a VFX Supervisor to begin creature tests and plan out how we’ll achieve all of the film’s wild visual effects.
- Hire on a Production Designer so we can start conversations about construction and set design, like how we’ll build a moving apartment set on a sound stage and all of the other ideas Racheal has for each location!
- Hire a Location Manager to help us find cool, tonally distinct filming locations in Los Angeles.
- Hire on a talented Composer to start developing the score with the pages and pages of ideas Racheal has for beautiful, experimental music.
- And more!
For the last four years, Writer/Director Racheal Cain Stephens has transparently documented the ups and downs of the process of making ALASKA from scratch on social media. The film currently has an audience of over 17,000 followers across its social platforms, including Facebook and Twitter, with 13,000+ awesome people, filmmakers, and artists following its Instagram account alone.
Follow the film everywhere on social media at @alaskathefilm for exclusive BTS updates and surprise announcements throughout the duration of our campaign!
We need all the help we can get in spreading the word about our campaign! We are so grateful for any and all support!
Risks and challenges
Every low budget independent feature film has risks and challenges, but with enough preparation, we can mitigate any potential issues! Our main risk is a change to our production schedule. Right now, we're planning to resume principal photography in Los Angeles in early 2019 to complete the remaining 80% of the film, but that schedule is contingent upon actor and crew availability and the rest of our financing successfully kicking in beforehand.
Luckily, if any unforeseen problems arise, we're prepared to adjust our schedule and budget accordingly to make the best and most efficient feature film before our big festival deadlines in 2019.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
