About

Who Are We?

We are John and Mike - two dudes who are passionate about food sustainability, practical jokes and building a team of awesome people who want to make a difference in the way food is raised and consumed throughout America. While learning about the problems of the global food system, we discovered things that kept us up at night.  What we witnessed could not be unlearned and there was no going back - the way America eats is not okay and The Foodery must offer a solution for truly healthy, convenient food. We left our finance careers of 10 years and started a business where human health, environmental sustainability and the company itself all win together as the business grows. We turned in our business suits for aprons and served the first Foodery meals in September 2012. Now with a growing team and hundreds of customers served, The Foodery is destined to make a meaningful impact on peoples' relationships with food in New England and beyond.  We want to prove how a healthy meal service can meet the demands of busy Americans while empowering responsible farmers with our steady and expanding purchasing.  Our dreams are big, but so are the food problems we intend to solve.

What is the vision for The Foodery? 

The old way isn't working anymore – Americans are getting bigger (literally) and our environment is suffering. High quality, convenient and affordable meals do not exist in this country in large scale. The Foodery will fill this void by establishing Foodery kitchens, first in Boston, then in different cities where each Foodery kitchen will procure ingredients from local farms and serve our food to nearby customers. We currently deliver meals right to our customers’ doorsteps – that may never change. But The Foodery will eventually offer meals through natural grocery stores, bodegas, gyms, healthy vending machines and other convenient access points. The vision is simple – serve local customers fresh and nutritious local food with convenience and great taste. As our product becomes widely affordable, human health, the environment and the treatment of animals will flourish as The Foodery succeeds.  We see no reason why food must be shipped across the world letting weeks go by before reaching an eater's plate.  The most nutritious, best-tasting food is grown responsibly on nearby farms.  We will forever buy from these growers as we serve our customers using our business model.

What are we going to do with the money? 

After operating in a small part-time kitchen for the past 18 months, we know exactly what we need to open the new Foodery kitchen in Boston, build the business to new heights and make truly healthy, convenient food accessible and affordable. Here's what we're going to do:

* EXPAND our menu to 4 times its current size - create 66 new Foodery menu items that meet our quality standards for organic ingredients, local sourcing, nutrition and 100% transparency labeling - fish, meat, snack and family-style options.

* LOWER our meal prices WHILE maintaining our quality - this will be done through economies of scale in bulk ingredient purchasing power

*.PURCHASE kitchen equipment for large-scale batch production 

* LAUNCH our first series of sustainable food workshops and second series of "Sustainable Plate" keynote presentations to spread awareness of food system issues and solutions

 We have farmers who depend on us for regular purchasing and customers who rely on us for the majority of their nutritional needs.  It’s now time to build a scalable infrastructure and make a major impact on building a sustainable food system in New England.

Risks and challenges

We've spent the past year in the trenches doing every aspect of our business so we have perspective on how we will overcome our business challenges, yet we know there will still be hurdles along the way. We will always be transparent with our community about challenges, including these:

Menu Expansion: Expanding our menu will happen in stages. We will offer more dishes, family style options, snacks, and more delivery days throughout the week. And not necessarily in that order. Please be patient as we expand our menu to include all your favorite dishes.

Cooking Food To Scale: Producing huge amounts of food at this quality level will require changes in how we operate right now. There’s a chance for missteps here, but we've worked 7 days a week for two years on The Foodery and understand where we will need help and expertise. With proper guidance from our team of chefs, together we will have the experience to continue creating food in larger scale while maintaining our quality standards.

Supplier Shortages: We work with a variety of suppliers to source the best ingredients. That becomes a challenge in the winter months in the Northeast. We will source more produce from organic suppliers across the country as supply in the Northeast is seasonally limited. Our quality standards are a cornerstone of The Foodery that we will keep as high as possible.
