STRETCH GOAL - $2,500!
WHAT IS EAT AWAY?
As a frequent traveler I have often been frustrated by how hard it is to eat vegan when dealing with language barriers. Eventually I made the app I always wished for: a translator that facilitates a conversation between you and a waiter, so they know what you can eat, and you know how they can help.
Eat Away trumps unreliable computer-generated translations and old-school translation cards; it's a modern, interactive solution for conveying any special diet. Accurate, easy to use and convenient—it even works offline!
WHERE IT STARTED
For over five years I have traveled the world for work (as a destination wedding videographer) and for pleasure. When I became vegetarian then vegan, I frequently encountered miscommunications using web translations while ordering in restaurants abroad. After a final ordering ordeal in Sicily, I knew that there must be a better way to communicate my diet. I discovered to my surprise that there wasn’t anything quite like Eat Away available. With my travel experience, knowledge of food, and conviction, I wanted to make an app that truly solves this problem—not just for me, but for travelers with all varieties of special diets.
When I returned to the US, I partnered with my friend Hayden to make the idea of Eat Away come to life. Researching cultures, languages, diets, and food, we knew that this wasn’t a simple endeavor. We spent months creating the most efficient and effective way to communicate the essentials of a customized diet with a waiter.
To round out the team, we were joined by graphic designer Julian Leon and programmer Josh Lichti. Julian’s clean, minimal, and vivid aesthetic helped shape the look we were seeking. Once the preliminary designs were complete, Josh’s insight and experience finally made all our sketches and notes a reality!
To create an app for the growing community of travelers with dietary restrictions, something that overcomes the language barrier between you and the waiter. Diving into the local cuisine is one of the most rewarding aspects of world travel and we wanted to make sure that it's accessible to everyone!
We’d also love to expand the reach of this app. If all goes well, we look forward to creating an Android version and adding lots of new languages!
WHAT MAKES EAT AWAY UNIQUE

HOW IT WORKS
To get a better understanding of how Eat Away works, take a look at these screenshots of the latest prototype!
When you install the app you will need to create your profile.
CHOOSE YOUR DIET
Start your profile by choosing from common diets or select “other” to build your diet from scratch.
SELECT ITEMS YOU WANT TO AVOID
If you need to tweak your diet on the level of individual foods, you can find them 1 of 3 ways.
- Search bar
A quick summary of your prohibited foods—even distinguishing allergens from foods that are simply avoided, for people with multiple issues.
SELECT YOUR DESIGNATED LANGUAGE
Check out the English preview so you know exactly what your waiter will read. Then simply scroll and choose the right language to translate.
Certain foods go by many different names in the diverse Spanish-speaking world. For clarity, Eat Away offers seven regional Spanish translations!
THE WAITER READS YOUR DIET
Your dietary restrictions are clearly laid out for the waiter—first the basic information, then any additional details and warnings that people don’t always think of. Then we check to make sure the waiter understands. Once they grasp the restrictions of your diet, they choose from a few options to let you know how the restaurant can accommodate you.
THE WAITER'S RESPONSE
After the waiter indicates what they can do, this choice is translated to keep you in the loop. Unlike other translation apps, Eat Away allows the waiter to give a response about how best to help you! We are looking to expand the potential conversation even more, and your support will help us to develop these options.
NEXT STEPS & WHERE THE MONEY WILL GO
As we near the completion of the first version of Eat Away, we realize we still have a few hurdles to anticipate and additional features we’d love to develop.
- Accurate and reliable translation is the heart of the app. We have found some great local translators from each region to decipher dialect differences within food names and phrases, now we just need to put them to work! Then with the data collected we will ensure complete precision in translation.
- Expected bug fixes and enhancements. Obtaining user feedback is crucial for us while beta testing the app. Once we have an understanding of what people like/want (or what hinders their experience), we will make the necessary improvements.
- Additional design adjustments. Even though we are happy with how the app looks overall, we do foresee some minor revisions to enhance the user’s experience.
- And lastly, promoting Eat Away. Marketing is crucial for an app’s success (and therefore its continued improvement). We hope to reach as many people as possible through social media, blogs, publications, and word of mouth. However, to do this requires branding assets created by our stellar designer (which requires money).

Risks and challenges
iPhone applications require a review before acceptance into the app store. Even though we plan on having beta testers scope out potential problems, Apple could veto the submission due to bugs or style compliance issues. If we encounter this, then our team will make the needed adjustments and resubmit!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
