About

PC Daddy AM/FM/SW PC Controlled Radio

We are building a low-cost USB AM/FM/Shortwave radio that turns your Windows PC or Laptop into a sophisticated multi-band radio receiver without spending thousands of dollars.  The radio can also be used with Mac's and Linux based systems as discussed below.

The PC Daddy is a very powerful and simple to use USB based software controlled Longwave, AM, Shortwave and FM radio system. Utilizing the latest integrated circuit design, the PC Daddy allows the user to completely control all functions of the radio from a PC screen and hear the radio's sound through the computer's speakers.

The radio device is a small 3.5"x 4.5" box which easily connects to a PC or laptop with a common USB cable.

The PC Daddy also displays the location, city and distance from the user of the possible stations tuned on both AM and Shortwave modes. This feature gives "DX " enthusiasts the ability to have a good idea of what station they are listening to without having to rely on waiting for the station to announce the call letters of the station. This feature is especially helpful when the station is broadcasting in a foreign language.

A number of different types of antennas can be used for the radio.  For example, the user can simply plug in a pair of common earbuds utilizing the 3.5mm jack on the radio for local AM/FM reception and modest shortwave reception.  The radio also has a BNC connector that the user can utilize to attach a random wire, dipole or any other type of external antenna that has a BNC connector.

The PC Daddy will compete very favorably with Winradio products at substantial costs savings to the consumer.

We have a fully working prototype that needs some software refinement in the USB interface to make it totally reliable on a wide range of PC's. In addition, we need to be able to purchase PCB's and components in sufficient quantities to realize economies of scale so that we can lower the purchase price of units to an affordable level--possibly below $100. We have demonstrated that the surface mount PCB's can be easily manufactured, perhaps in-house, or alternatively contracted out to an assembler.

The PC Daddy works well with Windows OS.  The radio also works with Linux and Mac OS, but the software interface needs some refinement to work seamlessly with those OS.

The predecessor to the PC Daddy (with a non-USB based control panel) was featured on the cover of the June, 2013 issue of Popular Communications magazine and the October, 2012 issue of Monitoring Times magazine. See www.tablerockinstruments.com.

Breakdown of Projected Costs and Expenditures:

From the total pledged amount of $30,000 we expect the following costs and expenditures:

Kickstarter and Amazon fees  .............................. $3000.00

Software Interface development  ......................... $5000.00

PCB Manufacturing Costs  ..................................  $17,000.00

Advertising, Marketing, Misc.  .............. ..............  $5,000.00

Risks and challenges

Our major challenges will be: 1.) to find the right software engineer who can help us solve the reliability issues such that the software interface can smoothly run on a variety of different types of PC's; and 2.) to streamline component costs so that we can hit our target goal of offering the product for U.S.$175.00.

We are qualified to overcome these challenges based on the fact that we have already completed a working prototype of the PC Daddy, thus showing our expertise in USB based radios. In addition, the lead engineer, Daniel C Conley, has the training, background and business experience to successfully complete the project.
