Daniel 'Dr. Dan the Pancake Man' Drake, hailing from St. Louis, MO, has been cooking breakfast at the local landmark Courtesy Diner (3155 S. Kingshighway) for almost 5 years now. And to pass the time and bolster his tips, he came up with a few clever tricks and designs that he could create with pancake batter. For a time, it was rad, and he saw that it was good; customers that ordered pancakes were never expecting to get their meal in the shape of a 1up Mushroom! Many more smiles were seen from that day on.
Fast forward a few years and Dr. Dan has suddenly found himself inundated with a surreal level of internet fame. A stranger posted a silly photo of him (taken by his acrobat friend Brent) on the popular website Reddit, and within a few hours, he was getting texts and phone calls from old friends telling him, "Dan, Dan, you're internet famous!"
Soon, local newspapers and television stations caught wind of his talents. Within two weeks, Dr. Dan saw himself in a featured story for the Riverfront Times, on the front pages of Imgur, Viralnova, iFunny, Yahoo News and Buzzfeed.
And then, the day after his Buzzfeed appearance, while he was standing at the griddle, cooking breakfast at Courtesy Diner, he got a phone call from NBC Universal with an offer to appear on the Today Show.
Within a day, Dr. Dan and his friend, Hank, were on a plane headed to the big apple. And the moment they set foot in their hotel room, across the street from Rockefeller Plaza (seriously this city is huge and pretty and this is so freaking cool), they got to work setting up this kickstarter. Because they see a fabulous opportunity to use this television appearance to change the world as it is, into a slightly more pancake-saturated one.
Have you seen Dr. Dan's pancake art? How cool would it be if he could drive his skills to you, set up shop, and cook you your very own stack of custom, art pancakes?
I guess that's the question you've got to ask yourself. Would that be cool enough for you to chip in, and help us buy a fancy mobile pancake lab? One that we will take to the streets and use - with your help - to create our very own all-American pancake success story?
Risks and challenges
We know going into this that, as awesome as pancake art can be, it may not be as easy as pie (or a piece of cake, lol).
We know that, if this project gets funded, we will have to be compliant with local laws and ordinances regarding the operation of a Food Service business.
We know that sanitation is a critical part of operating any foodservice establishment (even one on wheels!). Dr. Dan is fortunate to have earned his ServSafe Certification during his tenure at Courtesy Diner. Should our project be funded, we will be total neat freak sticklers when it comes to providing our clients with safe, delicious pancake art.
We know that operating a business is not as simple as buying a building, and there's no reason that should be different if your building has wheels. We understand that we will have a lot of overhead costs; fuel, oil, food, upkeep and maintenance.
We know that operating a food business isn't child's play, and we are dead serious about our commitment to this idea. And with your help and financial backing, we will gladly prove it to you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
