What If We Exceed Our Target?
We are so thankful for all who have donated to our journey. We are very close to our target, but don't let that deter you from donating! Kickstarter allows us to keep all funds above our target and we have committed to using the extra amount to pay a stipend to the artists who have graciously donated their talents and time to this project. And don't forget to choose one of our awesome rewards!
Update #2! A Rehearsal Video

Update! Matching Funds
A new donor has agreed to provide matching funds in the amount of $2,000 for every new contribution made! Thank you!! This tremendous generosity will bring us very very close to our target! Act now and every dollar you contribute will act as two dollars.
The relationship between India and America has been a continuing theme of the Deborah Abel Dance Company since its founding. We've been invited to India by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to bring our dance, our music and our passion to Jaipur, New Delhi, and Chennai in December. We will be forging connections with people in Chennai by performing at the Madras Festival of Dance and Music at the kind invitation of the Kalakshetra Foundation.
We are partnering with the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), which is a trade union for poor, self-employed women with over 1 million members in different regions all over India. Hillary Clinton recently identified the founder of SEWA, Ela Bhatt, as one of her 'heroines'. We are excited to be performing “Calling to You” for the members of SEWA in New Delhi after leading dance workshops and cultural exchanges with them. The ICCR is graciously paying for all our food, lodging, transportation, venue and publicity needs while we are in India. However, we are responsible for covering international airfare to get 22 artists to India.
This is where you come in! The Project ends on November 28th and your donations will go to pay for international airfare for our talented dancers, musicians, and designers. Any extra generosity on your part will go towards paying for a small salary to the artists.
"Calling to You”, under the artistic direction of Deborah Abel and Lee Perlman, is an evocative melding of modern dance and original music exploring human connections through the integral lens of Western psychology and Eastern bhakti philosophy. The work honors the role of ancient yogic wisdom in addressing the modern problems of ennui, and personal and spiritual disconnection.
Nirupama Rao, Ambassador of India to the United States, attended one of the company’s sold-out Boston performances in March 2012, and called the performance “…spectacular in every sense and from every aspect.”
About the Deborah Abel Dance Company
Deborah Abel has been choreographing since 1986 and has produced works that are richly layered and crafted to reach and inspire a wide variety of audiences. Lee Perlman is the company’s resident composer since 1991 and creates works of live music which evolve in conversation with the choreography.
Through a ecumenical perspective that is a meld of western views of love and human relationships and eastern bhakti philosophy, the dances explore the possibility of personal wholeness, and of deep, loving partnerships, families, and communities. Each concert is conceived as a whole, creating a universe into which the audience is invited to enter
The Boston Phoenix described Deborah’s work as exhibiting “...the lyricism and technical acuity of Jose Limon; the primordial thrust of Martha Graham; the sculptural peregrinations of Pilobolus. And infusing it all is a sense of breath powerful as the butoh concept of (to quote Sankai Juku founder Ushio Amagatsu) ‘inward wind’-an internal force…” Lee’s original compositions have been called a “tuneful new-age fusion of folk and modal melodies. The company is blessed to have a talented group of dancers, musicians, and designers:
Deborah Abel, Enid Ames, Richard Kizu-Blair,Paul Coggins, Michelle Dalton, Melika Fitzhugh, Merli V. Guerra, Joe Gonzalez, Alexis Johnson, Mark Kranz, Kristen Lawson, Wendy Lawson, Mary Neumann, Marytha Paffrath, Caleb Perlman, Lee Perlman, Anthony R. Phelps, Faith Pyne, Hadassah Segal, Ben Stewart, Michael Leon Thomas, and Tony Tucker,
We welcome Michael Leon Thomas (formerly of the Alvin Ailey, Lar Lubavitch, Complexions dance companies) as Guest Artist for our Indian journey.
What if you don’t meet your goal?
Unfortunately, NOTHING. If our entire $7,500 goal isn’t met before Wednesday November 28th, no money changes hands and our trip and entire project will be in big trouble. On the other hand, what happens if we collect more than our goal? We will get the entire amount pledged! Kickstarter will allow us to take in more than $7,500, so you can still donate even if the goal is reached. We realize $7,500 is already a lot of money; yet, it is a lot less than we would normally need due to the generosity of our Indian host and several grants from both India and the United States. More money collected would mean less begging, less borrowing, and less panic attacks.
Where does my money go?
The Deborah Abel Dance Company is a 501(c)3 Charitable Organization. All donations are tax-deductible! Your money goes directly to cover the company’s international airfare and salary for our amazing dancers. We've got some amazing rewards for each level of support! Find the one that excites you the most and jump on the “Calling to You” journey.
How Does Kickstarter work?
You can pledge any amount and choose a reward. At the end of our Kickstarter campaign, if the combined total of all pledges for our project meets our $7,500 goal, then the credit cards of those who have pledged are charged and we receive the funds for our journey. If we don't meet our goal, then the money is not withdrawn from your account and no rewards are provided. If we exceed our $7,500 goal then the extra funds will be used to pay a stipend to the artists who have graciously donated their talents and time to this project. Aside from a 5% Kickstarter fee and a 3-5% Amazon credit card processing fee, all funds raised will be used directly to support our journey.
Can I increase my donation?
YES! You can increase your donation before the deadline of November 28th. Once you donate to our campaign, you may want to change your incentive reward to a different one, or increase your pledge amount. To do so, go to Kickstarter and sign in. If you go to our campaign page, the green “Back This Project” button has been replaced with a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click it and you can enter a new amount, or choose a new incentive.

Risks and challenges
There are always challenges associated with a project of this scope. We have completed much of the work with the project such as the artistic works of choreography and musical compositions. We are also working closely with our hosts on the logistics within the borders of India. However, there can be expected events related to international travel that could affect the successful completion of all or parts of our journey. We are doing our best to minimize their likelihood but cannot remove them completely.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
