About this project
I have been a professional photographer on Block Island for seven years. I have written and designed a book with short reflections and stories and some of my best and most popular images of waves, all taken here on the island.
My wildest dream is that "Waves: Living with the Ocean on Block Island" will be a photographic reminder of "A Gift from the Sea", refreshing people's lives, giving them a tool to reflect on what is hopeful, balanced, clean, empowering and beautiful in their own experience.
"Waves: Living with the Ocean on Block Island" will be a fine art book, approximately 3.5 inches high and 8 inches long. It will be printed on beautiful paper, with french folding, sewn binding and a cloth hard cover. Images will be in color. It is important that the book be finely crafted, which accounts for much of its cost. I am committing my own funds to the publication of this book, but this grant will enable me to increase the number of books I can print, dramatically decreasing unit costs and making each book more affordable. Any money in excess of the requested grant will go to advertising, additional copies, and a broader marketing and distribution reach.
The printer I have selected, Meridian Printing in East Greenwich, RI, supports the need for sustainable resources and has completed a rigorous certification process to become a printer with Forest Stewardship Council Chain of Custody Certification. 100% of the emissions of the electricity used to operate its facility are offset with credits from certified wind power energy. The use of wind power energy, organic inks and FSC certified papers are some of the ways they demonstrate their commitment to the environment.
