About this project
karl jakob is a watch project based in Hamburg, Germany. Gratian and Björn are the minds behind the curtain. In the past, Gratian has launched a mens accessories brand and helped establish small watch brands from all over the world on the German market. Björn was with Montblanc and is currently working on a shirt brand. The VELDT is their first watch model.

A little interview on why we run this project.
Confessions first: We love wrist watches. They're a passion of ours since being adolescents. Which is why we feel something is wrong with modern day watch aesthetics: Oftentimes the case would be too clunky. The lugs too massive. Dial design either too playful or too classic. Yet another copy of a preppy kitsch watch already available on the market.
Two years ago, there was nothing that would both fit our budget and please our eye.
We were looking for an exceptionally slim case and we wanted our love for Bauhaus' design vocabulary to be reflected in the shaping. Bauhaus was all about clean lines, geometric features, and emphasizing design as high art. We wanted pure minimalistic zeitgeist cast into a product of our own. So, while never having designed a watch before, we started this side project, sat down with a glass of wine and a piece of paper and started drawing, stepping away from superfluous features. The shape of the hands was the first thing we came up with. More than two years ago.
1st priority: Shaping the case and the dial in a stylish, smart and unisex way. It is made for design aficionados, those feeling inspired by timeless architecture and typography. Allow me to introduce our first model: the VELDT.
We saw fashion watches become increasingly heavier and larger in diameter during the last few years. Disapproving of this trend, we sourced the slimmest high quality, durable watch movement we could find (made by the Japanese Citizen group - 2.33mm in height - 4 years battery lifetime) and ended up with an overall height of 6.8mm.
With its unobtrusive 38mm diameter the VELDT sits nicely on most wrists. The wire lugs, welded to the case, are the only retro element and they allow us to increase a desired effect: even though we use 316L low-carbon stainless steel, we reduced needless material input and made the watch very lightweight.
Lest I forget, the VELDT also has a sapphire crystal with anti-glare coating for less reflections. It's 30m water resistant and comes with a date function, a useful thing in our way of thinking. You'll find two more, rather unconventional features: a) There's no second hand since it would do nothing but distract you anyway (have you ever seen someone adjusting their watches' second hand?) b) The crown sits at 4 o’clock, in line with the date window, for increased wearing comfort.
In our opinion, a watch has to take a subordinate role to the rest of the outfit. That's why we made the VELDT customizable. Straps can be swapped at the push of a button and within seconds. Straps are made from soft genuine leather without seams or other distracting elements. Every VELDT ships with two straps: one in maroon brown and one in pitch black.
It's been quite a journey to the VELDT as we are showing it to you today. We have tried several designs, experimenting with automatic movements, construction alternatives, dial designs, manufacturing partners and naming. Not long ago, the prototype no. 6 finally satisfied us.
Today, we're presenting the 6th prototype aka. VELDT with almost nothing left to be changed. We know that the next one will be ready for batch production. Slight changes will be made to the logo you see in the video to look like the one you see on the images (lowercase letters). We'll alter the engraving jobs and the size of the date window (marginal increase). Plus, we're still working on the packaging. We will keep you updated!
Still, we are convinced that this prototype allows us to convey our product idea to you. That's why today, we're reaching out to you via Kickstarter: we are asking for your help if you like the outcome of our work as much as we do. A successful campaign will empower us to produce the first batch, limited to 1000 units, engraved by a local specialist.
Here's a little roundup, everything you need to know about the VELDT in a nutshell. It comes with:
- a very slim and lightweight case made of low-carbon stainless steel, 3ATM waterproof
- a reliable Japan made movement with 4 years of battery life
- a robust sapphire crystal with anti-glare coating
- a crown placed at 4 o'clock to reduce stress on your skin while turning your wrist
- a luminova dot on each hand to be readable in the dark
- a date function we consider useful in a watch
- a set of two easy-swap wristbands in black and brown genuine leather coming with each watch to match your outfit's tone
- an engraved back cover indicating your model number (1 to 1000)
Our manufacturer is ready to start production. The packaging is almost finished. The watchmaker responsible for quality control is waiting to disassemble his first VELDT. The shipping process is set up. We are good to go. We've done this before and we promise we'll stick to our timetable.
OHNE DICH KEIN KARL
We cut out the middleman by selling the VELDT directly to you, no wholesale or retail partners, no blown up marketing spendings. Which means we are able to reduce the price to a very reasonable level. A price that allows us to take the VELDT project from start to finish, starting at 129 €.
This project has taken a lot of time and is very dear to us. It is our ultimate goal to send a product to everyone within the Kickstarter community who helps us breathe life into karl jakob and our first model VELDT.
Everyone wants them, because they just make sense: tote bags. Grocery shopping, festival, going out, you name it. Simple, reduced and versatile (just like the VELDT). Get yours for €25!
Urban streetwear at its best. It's as monochrome as the VELDT, it's super comfy and it's perfect for accompanying you through long summer nights. Available in sizes S, M and L for €59. We'll ask you for your size via email right after the campaign has ended.
DANKESCHÖN UND AUF WIEDERSEHEN!
Risks and challenges
Delivery time: In manufacturing, there's always a risk that suppliers do not fulfill orders on time. Which is why we chose manufacturers (watch, band and packaging) and partners (logistics, engraver) we have previously worked with - so we know what to expect. Communication works like a breeze and everyone, down to the present day, has always stuck to their commitments.
Duty/VAT charges: If you live outside of the EU, you will be responsible for any applicable duty/VAT charges.
Customs: Sometimes customs can take an awful lot of time. We'll provide them any information they need, but still - we can't foresee how long your individual shipping procedure might take. This, of course, only applies to non-EU countries.
There will be frequent updates with images, videos, maybe even interviews. We are 99% certain that we will break through all obstacles along the way - in case we don't, we will let you know immediately.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
