About this project
Hello! Our band Pamyua has an amazing opportunity to shoot a music video in Unalakleet, Alaska. We are doing a concert there and want to bring a professional film crew with us to spend an extra day filming a music video. To sweeten the deal, we have a friend in Unalakleet with a small commuter plane who has agreed to fly us around to get epic landscape shots of us standing on an arctic mountain ridge, or something like that. We are very excited because we've never done anything like this before.
The song we're singing in the music video is called Bubble Gum and is written by Ossie, one of the founders of Pamyua. Bubble Gum is on Pamyua's upcoming double album titled SideA/SideB.
Bubble Gum is sung in the Yup'ik language from Alaska and is inspired by traditional Inuit drum-dancing. This particular drumsong shows the importance of teasing in Inuit culture. The inspiration for this song was a student chewing gum in Ossie's dance class. During the long cold winters dancing and drumsongs filled the silence, and humor was added to lighten everyone's spirit.
SideA/SideB offers traditional music from Inuit culture and falls within the growing Inuit World Music genre. This album reminds listeners to embrace relationships with honor, humility and tolerance. Pamyua hopes to inspire others to honor relationships between people, animals and ideas. The Inuit drum-dance tradition celebrates these relationships and works to respect the natural world for all of its majesty and mystery.
Pamyua's double album SideA/SideB is a collection of Inuit drumsongs from the circumpolar Arctic. SideA/SideB offers a new approach to appreciate Inuit music. SideA (Disc 1) features vocals and Inuit drums to honor the instrumentation of Inuit tradition; SideB (Disc 2) offers the same songs with different interpretations and instrumentation, i.e., piano, strings, guitar, etc. The expected release is late summer 2012.
