What is it?

The X500 Pro is the final product in a line of computer cases designed a few years back (the X500 Plus and later the Evo with a mechanical keyboard) as a tribute to the computers of the '80s and '90s (Commodore, Atari, Sinclair etc...). It's a wedge styled computer case with built-in, full size mechanical keyboard.

The X500 Pro is designed for modern hardware: mini-ITX motherboards (17cmx17cm), Flex-ATX power supplies (these can be found from 150W all the way up to 500W).

The X500 Pro has been completely created from scratch to offer users the space required to build more powerful systems. So it's mainly aimed at power users, modders and system builders and whoever wants to create something different and unique.

It's entirely made of textured plastic.

The base is 6mm thick and it now holds everything: the motherboard, the dual slot, full size graphics card (unlike the previous models, Plus and Evo which only allowed the use of a single slot, low profile card), the hidden ON/OFF switch, up to four optional (two per side) 50x50x10mm cooling fans (up to 50mm from the original 40mm ones), the SSD/HDD drive, the Flex-ATX power supply, the Power and Drive Activity LEDs.

With this new base no cables run from the cover any more making the opening/closing of the case much easier, just remove the three screws at the back, three at the front and the two on the sides (one per side).

The X500 Pro also presents bigger air vents all around (top, sides, back and bottom) and a new aperture in the cover. This lets the user install a transparent or tinted window to show off the graphics card and the motherboard in place of the existing black panel in the cover. The graphics card makes use of a flexible 16x PCI Express riser card (not included, 24 cm minimum length). The extra window can be ordered in several colours as shown in the videos and photographs or be replaced with an aluminium mesh (not included) to improve cooling further. Aluminium mesh is often used by PC modders to customise their machines and also to improve cooling and aesthetics.

The X500 Pro allows you to build your own modern, powerful computer, with your choice of components and Operating System like Windows, Linux, AmigaOS, AROS, MOS etc...

Any mini-ITX motherboard should fit from x86 to PowerPC ones such as the A-Eon/ACube boards for AmigaOS (A1222/Tabor and SAM models).

The user can now install a powerful dual slot, full size, mini-itx gaming graphics card such as the ATI Radeon 285 Compact or the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti SC Gaming 4GB as long as they don't exceed 170mm in length (slightly longer card might fit but they haven't been tested).

Remember this is still a very small enclosure so always consider power usage and cooling when planning your system. When assembling your new machine please consider the use of Solid State Drives as they are fast, silent and have no moving parts.

What is included:

The plastic case (back, front, sides and base all bonded together) plus the black replaceable window cover. The tinted and transparent windows are optional.

The LEDs window cover (already applied to the case), the tailed ON/OFF switch (already applied to the case), the tailed LEDs with LED holders (already applied to the case), 8 black M3 screws, one X500 Pro badge (not applied) and 5 rubber feet are also included.

The X500 Pro comes with new mechanical keyboard supports, and a new mechanical keyboard; Ducky's Ducky Zero Series keyboards, these come with back-lit key caps with the U.K. language layout. Above every Cherry MX switch there is an LED which shines through the letter or symbol on the key caps, this only applies to the original, black caps with the U.K. language layout which come with the keyboard. The Ducky Zero Series also offer some cool lighting effects by the use of the Fn+F11 and F10 keys, the manual will be included.

Questions and answers:

What about an all-white version of the X500 Pro?

Investigating costs...an all-white X500 Pro would be cool!

What about an all-beige version of the X500 Pro?

Investigating costs...an all-beige X500 Pro would be very cool!

Can I just pledge for Amiga key caps to support the campaign?

Yes you can. Let me know the colours and the language layout. You will need to add packaging and shipping costs.

How do I fix the removable window?

This is left to the user. Some suggestions are double side sticky tape and/or hot glue. This way the user can change/remove the window easily if required.

Why are the 50x50x10mm silent fans, the 16x PCI-Express Riser Card and silicone mounts not included?

To keep the overall cost down and to give the users the freedom to buy the ones they favour themselves, as expressed by many during the X500 Plus campaign. The length of the 16x PCI-Express Riser Card must be 24 cm minimum.

What if I don't want to use the "X500 Pro" badge?

Have one or more made especially for you by Mateo. You can reach him at this address:  mateoproceo@gmail.com or via the website: www.mateoproceo.com, he'll be happy to consider your design/requests.

Where can I find Flex-ATX Power Supplies?

Online. :-)

Go for the most silent one. The 320W in my X500 Pro seems to do a good job.

If you require a flex-atx power supply with fewer cables and/or of a certain length you could try: http://athenapower.com they make nice power supplies and can customise the length and number of cables for you.

Remember this is still a very small enclosure so always consider power usage and cooling when planning your system. When assembling your new machine please consider the use of Solid State Drives as they are fast, silent and have no moving parts.

How do I connect the USB cable from the keyboard to the motherboard?

a) Use a USB to four header adapter

b) Cut the keyboard USB cable to the length required and then crimp a 4 pin internal header

c) Use one of the external USB ports on the motherboard

History:

The project is a home brew product and was born out of a discussion with friends and on forums such as amigaworld.net, amiga.org, amiganews.it more than seven years ago.

Initially I set the task of designing this case as a personal challenge, to see what I could achieve with my limited resources. So in 2005 I started sketching a few ideas out and building the first prototype. Every time I saved some money I’d work on it. I made several prototypes but I kept adding and perfecting it on people's request by adding new features.

The X500 Plus, with a chiclet keyboard was produced and soon followed by the X500 Evo with the mechanical keyboard.

The X500 Pro is a much improved version designed for power users, it picks up from where the previous two versions stopped and takes the design further. The Pro will be the last in the line of the X500 computer cases.

One FULL set of Amiga inspired key caps with YOUR OWN LANGUAGE LAYOUT, (these caps are NOT double-shot caps - no light through letters/symbols, the entire cap is illuminated if there is a LED behind). ISO only as the X500 Pro mechanical keyboard comes with the ISO standard. Key cap puller and the original black, double-shot set of key caps with the U.K. layout are also included with your X500 Pro.

Please select your language layout: Italian, U.K., Spanish, German, Swedish (Finnish), Norwegian, American (ISO), French, Serbian-Latin, Dual Greek-American, Danish, Russian, French-Canadian, French-Belgian.

Choose ONE colour for your set of key caps from the Key Caps Colour Chart. You will find them inside your X500 Pro case.

Risks and challenges

In my spare time I enjoy designing and producing custom enclosures and cases for boards such as the Minimig by Dennis van Weeren, the 1541 Ultimate by Gideon Zweijtzer, both enclosures were successful and admired by their users as you can see in the videos and links. The X500 Plus and Evo have also been well received but requests to produce more cases has pushed me to completely redesign the X500 and offer this final, improved version.

Basically all the common risks and challenges associated with product design are present; you depend on contract manufacturers and third-party suppliers for delivery of parts and components but they are all well established and reliable people in the industry.

Finding couriers to deliver the box from the U.K. has proved challenging but hopefully the ones I've chosen will be reliable and not too expensive.
