Gewand Manufaktur - the German tailor service for historical and fantasy productions
Gewand Manufaktur, a tailor’s atelier in Marl, Germany, has decades of combined experience in producing top quality tailored historical garments and accessories. Amongst its esteemed clientele are professional knights, rock bands Saltatio Mortis (three albums on #1 in German charts), Mr Hurley & die Pulveraffen, Vroudenspil, as well as hundreds of historical re-enactors, LARPers and other medieval and fantasy enthousiasts.
For 2019, Gewand Manufaktur has landed at a critical juncture: do we stop, or will we go 'all in' for at least the upcoming 10 years? We would love to continue our business, but this requires some big upgrades: a better equipped workshop, increased shop space, and we wish to offer a brand-new service to our passionate hobby clients. For this, we are asking for your financial support.
In return, we offer our newest service/product with a special Kickstarter discount: you only pay for the fabric used in each garment.
Medieval clothing: buy or DIY?
While tailored clothing offers a better fit than off-the-shelf products, traditionally, it comes at a higher price. You are required to visit the tailor’s atelier several times. It can take months to draft a unique pattern and sew a full outfit in your size, especially when the tailor’s services are in high demand. And with a bit of bad luck, you gain or lose weight in the lengthy process, causing a less than optimal fit of the final garment. Not to mention the budget required for hand-sewn clothing...
A good alternative is to make your own kit: you can buy, try and make everything at your own costs and in your own pace. However, very few of us are experienced enough to know which weft of fabric to pick, how to work with a paper pattern, or how to adjust a standard pattern to a garment that fits you well. This usually results in an average quality result, which is a pity given the time and effort you put into it.
We now proudly present a third option: the Royal Needle Collection. Your choice of model and fabrics, cut according to your measurements by the tailors of Gewand Manufaktur.
How does it work?
1. Select your desired clothing model as reward packs
2. Pledge the total amount for all packs you wish to receive
3. Message us to tell us which packs you picked
At the end of the Kickstarter, we will send you a questionnaire. Through this questionnaire you can provide us with the additional required details, being:
4. Pick your desired fabrics and colors
5. Enter your measurements
6. Add optional extras for personalization
Gewand Manufaktur cuts the fabrics according to your wishes, confection-tailored to your measurements. Together with a step-by-step sewing guide, the cut fabric package will be shipped to you. All you need to do is follow the instructions to make your new, tailored clothing.
This is a hybrid formula of 1) purchasing our tailoring and cutting service, and 2) finishing your medieval kit. It allows you to profit from our tailors' knowledge, without having to pay the high price of a custom-made product made by our craftsmen from A to Z. After all, many of you have the basic sewing skills needed for sewing your own medieval garments.
Our fabrics rank amongst the world's finest
As re-enactors and LARPers, we strive to produce the best possible quality of fabrics. With help from our regional partners, we are able to produce top quality fabrics for an equally satisfactory price. Does your local fabric store only sell wools that feel like fleece? Is the linen barely worthy for a dishcloth? We know the struggle, so struggle no longer: get yourself a costume in our fabrics. We are pleased to share it with you. Get a fabric swatch here!
Gewand Manufaktur offers its tested and proven quality of fabrics and haberdashery, procured at a competitive price. Due to its advanced workshop, Gewand Manufaktur is able to cut fabrics with unsurpassable efficiency, speed and accuracy. And last but not least, sewing it yourself allows you to add your personal touch to the latest addition of your medieval kit in your signature style.
So, what will you get yourself for next season?
Reward packs: how to
The reward packs are split per model, material and quantity. That means that, for example, the cotehardie comes in wool or linen. You can get one or multiple in the early-bird pack, in a regular pack, and in a 5-pack. The early-bird packs and the 5-packs have the same price per item. When picking the 5-pack, you can have each of the five in a different colour. Example: a 5-pack of woolen cotehardies can contain two red, one blue, one white and one black cotehardie fabric pack.
Pledging for one or more reward packs
You can pledge for just one reward pack, or a total amount. In case you want multiple reward packs, you can add up the amounts of all reward packs you want to receive, and pledge the total amount. Please send us a DM message to tell us which reward packs you wish to receive for the amount your pledged. We will inform you per DM in case of increased shipping costs due to the increased weight and volume. Extra shipping costs may apply. In case you do not transfer the extra shipping costs, we will keep your reward pack(s) until the extra shipping costs have been paid.
When your regular size is XXL or above, we kindly ask you to add an additional €10 per linen item, and/or €25 per wool item. Items of these sizes demand a different cutting layout which requires more fabric. Thank you for your understanding. In case we notice that you you provided us with measurements for size XXL or bigger, without included the surcharge in your pledge, we will send you one reminder to transfer the surcharge. In case you do not transfer the surcharge, we will keep your reward pack until the surcharge has been paid.
When to tell us your sizes and colour preferences
Once this Kickstarter campaign has successfully finished, you will receive a questionnaire. In this questionnaire we will ask you to provide us with your measurements and preferred fabric colours. You will find a link to our 'how to take your measurements' guide in the questionnaire. Don't worry, it's easy.
The wool fabrics come in the following colours: black, blue, purple, red, brown, green, yellow, grey, natural. Plant-dyed wool comes in the lighter tones of previous stated colours; they resemble colours as seen in nature. All undergarments (shorts, shirt, underdress) are made from our finest white linen. Lining is made in natural coloured cotton or natural coloured linen.
Reward pack examples
The below images show the finished garments as we made them. Please know that all garments that require buttons, will include the fabric for making fabric buttons. Of course, you can use any other type of button.
The bare necessities: underwear. Our fine white linen is very comfortable to wear. It breathes, it regulates the temperature, it's easy to clean... We have yet to meet a client who wasn't blown away by the touch of this fabric. A real must-have to be worn underneath all other garments.
The cotehardie (red vest in picture below) is usually worn as a layer between a linen shirt and a coat. It follows the lines of the arms and torso.
The kirtle is a good alternative to a cotehardie. It is slightly longer, and it is closed at the front. It is great to combine with a surcotte or a houppelande.
Going out? Don't forget to put on your surcotte! Not only is it very comfortable to wear, it also has a distinguished look. While it looks very decent by itself, as seen in the picture, the surcotte is the garment of choice for further decorations: stitchings, pearls, or even dagged sleeves...
To have an abundance of fabric in ones garment was a symbol of status and riches. The houppelande is a wide coat with enormous sleeves. It can be seen on many portraits being worn by nobility. The sleeves and lower edges are great for decorative dagging, as seen in the picture below.
In case you'd rather not walk around in just your underwear, hose (also known as beinlinge) will do the job. Due to the fact that most 14th century upper body garments were knee-length of longer, the legs needn't be joined. The top of each leg can be tied to your cotehardie or a belt.
What's more medieval than a hood? The lady's hood has a cut down the center front, which closes with buttons. The men's hood is closed, and has dagged decorations at the lower trim. Both hoods have a long liripipe (point at the back).
13th century cotte
13th century fashion was remarkably simple. The cotte was basically a long version of the tunic. It is recommended to wear in combination with a linen shirt, a 13th century woolen surcotte (see below) and a belt.
13th century surcotte
This garment evolved from the cyclas, which front and back were joined only at the shoulders, and had no sleeves.
When the sides are closed and sleeves are added, it becomes a surcotte. If desired, the front and back can be slit open at the lower seam to allow more space for movement, and to tuck in the corner into your belt.
You may keep the arm pits open, or slice the arms open in the length direction of the sleeve about the height of the elbow, to turn it into a gardecorps - another overgarment of the 13th century.
So with this fabric pack, you have the choice to make three different models!
The garments shown above were sewn and finished according to our taste. Of course, you can change any garment to your wish. For example,
- Order two hose packs in different colours, so you can make two mi-parti hose
- Use tin buttons instead of brass buttons, or fabric buttons, or lace, or points...
- Add stitchings and pearls on the sleeves
- Change the shapes of the decorative dagging on your houppelande
At the start, we are only able to deliver a small selection of models, colours and options. Nevertheless, with the help of your imagination, every garment made from the Royal Needle packs can be a unique piece of art. Get creative, go wild!

Risiken und Herausforderungen
With our high tec facilities, tailoring software packs and expert team we do our utmost to cut your garments for an optimal fit. Tailoring is still a difficult task to fulfill, especially when the tailor has never seen the client, and the client provides his own measurements.
We provide you with an online guide on how to take your own measurements. Please follow all steps as accurately as possible. In case you have difficulty with taking your own measurements, ask a friend to help you.
While many clothing producers use a seam margin of 5mm, we prefer to use a seam margin of 15mm. That means that every cut part of fabric has an extra rim of 15 mm width all around. Before sewing your garments, please pin the parts together and try it on (be careful with the needles). In case the fit is a little too tight for you at some spots, you can use the 15mm of spare fabric on each edge to enlarge your fit. For a garment that has two front parts and two back parts, that means an extra 40mm on the body's circumference, which should be enough to correct most measureming errors.
Please note that your garments will be confection-tailored. This means that we will match your measurements with your corresponding confection size as used with dresses and suits. The garment will then allow you to dress/undress, wear and move the garments comfortably.
Good to know: fabrics for historical garments usually don't have the same material properties as modern garments. Our 100% pure linen doesn't stretch, for example.
Due to the fact that these fabric packs will be cut according to the measurements you provide us with, and you will sew the outfit by yourself, we cannot be held responsible for the fit of your garment. Return policy does not apply due to the fact that the product is made to the measurments and wishes of the client, thus is not suitable for selling to other customers.
Although we appear to be on schedule with our investments, we are still dependent on our weavers, dyers and cutters. Due to the complexity of the production process, delays may occur and can have an influence on the delivery date of reward packs. We thank you for your understanding and patience until we have resolved the issue and get your reward packs ready for shipping.
We ship your reward pack with Deutsche Post/DHL. The package will be insured to a value of €500, and you will receive a Track&Trace code. Additional shipping charges may apply for non-EU countries. You will be informed per DM if extra payment to cover shipping costs are required. We will only ship your reward packs after receipt of extra payment.Näheres zur Rechenschaftspflicht auf Kickstarter
