About

The adventure/thriller novel, HORN, uses the brutal facts behind the tragic surge in rhino poaching, and a cast of compelling characters, to tell a timely tale of international greed, violence, sex, and love.

A black rhino in Southern Africa.
A black rhino in Southern Africa.

The story unfolds in the United States, Namibia, and South Africa. Hero Matthew Harkes, curator of large mammals at the National Zoo, is drawn into the rhino wars by a brutal crime at the City Zoo in Baltimore, Maryland: the murder of a veterinarian and the slaughter of a genetically valuable black rhino recently imported from Namibia. The death of the rhino deals a damaging blow to the sustainability of the captive population of black rhinos in North America.

An avid outdoorsman who is committed to rhino conservation, Harkes travels to Africa to explore the feasibility of collecting genetic material from wild rhinos to use in frozen zoos in a last-ditch effort to maintain the endangered species in zoos and in the wild. As the adventure unfolds, Harkes finds himself pitted against a mysterious enemy; an enemy bent on controlling both the immensely profitable illegal and legal trades in wildlife. Traveling from the deserts of Damaraland in Namibia to the game ranches of Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa, Harkes is drawn into a violent and corrupt world.

The book is currently undergoing final changes with a book editor to add a layer of polish to the whole project. The next step will be to get the cover designed and the book laid out for both print and electronic media.  This is where the campaign comes in - the money the campaign raises will go towards the design and layout of the book.  Any extra money that the campaign raises will go towards marketing materials to promote the book to a wider audience when it gets published.

The amount I am looking raise in this campaign is based on quotes for the design of the book.

Risks and challenges

The challenge with a project like HORN will be working with the designer to come up with a cover design and layout for the book that complements the story. As an editor and a publications manager covering the zoo industry in North America, I have collaborated with a number of talented designers to produce top-quality print and online projects over the years. One thing I have learned in my career is that producing a quality publication - whatever the media - involves bringing the talents of a wide range of people to the table. I am currently doing that with a professional book editor. This campaign will allow me to take the next step and do the same with the design of HORN.
